Koh Tao Thailand is famous for its beautiful islands with white, sandy beaches lined with coconut trees, so I wanted to visit one, too. Koh Tao was the first one on my way south the isthmus and I planned my ride to hop on the night ferry. The 7-hr sail over was smooth and I arrived at the first glimpses of sunlight. Sitting on the beach, watching the sunrise and waiting to be able check in to my hostel. Koh Tao is famous for its marvellous diving and snorkel with many people doing their dive certificate here. I did a snorkel tour, rented a scooter to explore the island without breaking a sweat climbing the crazily steep hills on my bike, lay at the beach, bathed in the blue water and watched a fire show in the evening. But to be honest, I didn’t really like it. Used to almost empty beaches off the beaten track, friendly locals and quiet back country lanes, I didn’t feel comfortable in the hustle of tourist life. Every viewpoint was claimed by a local who had set up a business and asked you to pay. There was an entry fee to beaches and businesses put out loungers and mat on the beach leaving hardly any place for someone just wanting to chill without to pay. Plus, everything was more expensive than usual. I left earlier than planned and looked forward to the quiet, lesser travelled roads that are so beautiful to discover when travelling by bicycle. ☺️ #twowheelsontour #2wheelsontour #biketour #biketrip #biketouring #ilovebiketouring #explorebybike #worldbybike #webiketheworld #lifeontheroad #whileoutriding #noordinarywoman #bikelife #travelbybike #womencycling #cyclinggirl #solocycling #bicycletouring #shewentwild #veloweltweit #shewhowanders #femaleadventurer #kohtao #thailand #cyclingthailand #exploringthailandbybike

After amassing over 9000 miles of cycling and hiking with my @bearvault bear canister, BearVault finally recruited me to be their ambassador! 😁🐻 The first time I used my bear canister was in 2018, when I pedaled 3700 miles around eastern Canada. I recently wrote a short blog about the quirks of that journey. Link in bio to "Thank You, Wolves." I wrote another one of my life stories for Bicycling Magazine. "Into the Wind" is about a great escape, a long journey, and the joy of being a body in motion. It's also a tribute to Jenn Hill, a cyclist whose influence shaped my thinking and my life. Cheers, Jenn.✨️ Thank you Tom, Hugo, Ava, and everyone who fact-checked and supported this story. It's always a pleasure and an honor to work with editor @leahflick and the team at Bicycling Magazine.  Into The Wind is available now in the Spring 2024 issue of Bicycling.  Photo 2: Me at 23, riding south from Alaska. #rideforjenn #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure #bicycling #shredthepatriarchy

Happy 🌎 day!

4/23/2024, 3:59:28 AM

I finished my loop down the coast and cruised back towards Rustee's house. Along the way I ate a popsicle and made friends with an inanimate metal man. The metal man lives along a bike path, so he must have a lot of cyclist friends.  I turned into Rustee's driveway and noticed that the Firebird (my car) was missing. In its place was a giant hole. I thought that was odd, so I continued to the backyard where I found the Firebird parked on the lawn.  Apparently in the time that I was gone a developer had dug a massive hole for a new building a few feet from Rustee's house. Also, Rustee had shaved his hair into a stylish mohawk. A lot can happen in a week and a half! Sorry I didn't capture those photos--it's my biggest regret.  The other change I noticed is that instead of snow falling, flowers are now blooming. In the span of a week and a half, the seasons have truly shifted. I biked into spring! #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #konabikes #bearvault #oldmanmountain #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

I love cooking on my tiny twig stove. First I boil water to pour into my thermos along with coffee grounds. I store the thermos in my sleeping bag so I'll have hot coffee in the morning. Then I boil more water to make dinner--in this case pasta with kale and dried beef. Then after dinner sometimes I boil more water for tea, either from plants that I gathered or tea bags I bought. And then if it's cold out and I'm not tired yet, I add more twigs to the fire and just enjoy the light and warmth. In the beginning of this trip it rained a lot, so I had to burn dry/damp bark that I gathered from the base of conifers. It was kind of smoky but it worked well enough. Recently the weather has been sunny. I've really enjoyed the ease of creating light and heat from a few dry twigs each evening. Fire is a thing of focus. It allows the mind to wander, but still stay riveted. There's something to that. #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #konabikes #bearvault #oldmanmountain #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

Ah yes, just another day at the beach...dressed in my winter layers, using my thermos lid to pour lake water over my sleeping pad, trying to find the leak.🤣 I found it and patched it so HA! Afterward I lay on the sand, looking up at the sky, and tried to think of how many times I've patched sleeping pad punctures. It has to be over 50. At least.  I'm super careful with my inflatable pads but punctures still happen. To find the puncture, I blow up the pad and dunk it in water or pour water overtop. I've done this in bathtubs, in sinks, in buckets, from hoses outside random buildings, streams, lakes, water fountains. I look for air bubbling from the puncture, mark the spot with a pen, let the pad dry, and dab on sealant. Sometimes the bubbles are obvious but other times they're nearly invisible. It's a thing. But I will say--after sleeping a few nights on a deflated pad, especially in cold weather, it feels really luxurious to wake up in the morning on a pad that has held air! 🙃 #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #konabikes #bearvault #oldmanmountain #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

Despite this fear, I pursued my passion relentlessly, becoming a proficient surfer and watersports instructor and delving into the world of sailing and boat deliveries. 🌊This further solidified my bond with the sea, guiding me towards a deeper understanding of myself and the natural world. Alaska’s wilderness is where a newfound passion for aquaculture came alive—a journey that continues to inspire my quest for an intimate connection with nature.🧜🏼‍♀️ ⛵️Navigating through life’s twists and turns, I’ve engaged in countless conversations about my ever-evolving pursuits with loved ones. Yes, I embrace change wholeheartedly, fueled by the enthusiasm of my ADHD. Instead of viewing it as a limitation, I recognise it as a superpower—an innate drive to explore every corner of existence. 🙈Facing uncertainty, I’ve learned to trust my instincts and follow my heart, even if it means falling a million times. Through it all, I’ve discovered the gift of hyperfocus, which allows me to pour my energy into the pursuits that truly matter. 🌊⚓️This photo captures a glimpse of my true happy place—I love steering the boat on open water. It’s where I am fully present, immersed in the beauty of the natural world. 🌅To anyone facing their battles or grappling with perceived limitations, know this: You are not defined by your challenges but by the strength and resilience with which you face them. I finished the trail section of this route. Now I'll camp for a few days and loop back down the coast on pavement and gravel.  I'm grounded in my body, my relationship with nature, and the ever-shifting peace I feel at being part of the human world. For me, solo trips are a great escape from society. But they also make me feel closer to my own species in ways that often surprise me. On Saturday morning I had to break the ice off my tent poles before they would fold. I packed up and rode out. The leaves on the ground were a frozen mass of frost. Within a few miles my water froze in my bottle.  Then by the afternoon the sun came out and it was actually warm!  On Sunday it was warm enough for shorts. I spent a long morning in my tent and then continued on pavement to the North Country Traverse trailhead. This is a 173 mile nontechnical sngletrack route which forms the first part of my loop.  It was still raining, but no more snow. I turned onto the trail and pedaled slowly through beech and pine forests. The trees were grey sticks, the ground covered in wet brown leaves. The thing that was really wild was the moss. How does moss stay so green all winter?? It lined the path and covered roots, trees, logs, rocks. At one point I left my bike and wandered through what seemed to be a moss sculpture garden--a field of twisted tree trunks, swathed in the most beautiful brilliant green. There is so much going on in these forests.  #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #konabikes #bearvault #oldmanmountain #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

4/5/2024, 9:32:23 AM

I abandoned the Firebird at Rustee's house (thank you Rustee!!!), stuffed some gear in my bike bags, and pedaled off into a sleet storm. Ahhh, springtime in Michigan!  I wound through city streets and bike paths until they thinned and opened into fields and forests. I've always loved biking out of cities, leaving them behind. The traffic softens, skies widen, and I breathe deeper. I passed a family buring some brush in their yard, and savored the smell of the wood smoke. With it came the scent of wet earth from a roadside farm. The identity of a place is made up of all its parts, and these smells all seemed important.  It was kind of cold and windy but I had all my layers. Sleet plopped down on my hood. Then rain, then snow. I wondered why I was so happy. Is it normal to be so happy, biking into the unknown with frozen water sliding down your face? I care a lot about my body and how it feels, and I work hard to keep myself warm and dry and rested and well fed. Maybe that's part of the reason it's so easy to be so instantly happy on the open road. I trust that I will take good care of myself.  At dusk the pavement turned to sandy mud, and I slogged my way forward. Families of deer bounded across the road ahead of me, their hooves leaving deep tracks. Finally I arrived at a sign, and then a bend in the road, and then the campsite I'd been aiming for. It's a quiet spot with tall pines and a slow-moving river. I set up my tent on the riverbank, ate a reindeer sausage and some walnuts, and went to bed wearing all my layers.  #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #konabikes #bearvault #oldmanmountain #revelatedesigns #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

Welcome to Thailand! Pakse (Laos) - Khao Yai NP Cycling from the border with Laos at Pakse in a direct way to Bangkok didn’t hold any wow-factors in terms of scenery, but it was a good introduction to Thailand. I was happy to find good roads with (generally) wide shoulders - and big Buddha statues on the side of the road. The further away I got from Laos, the greener the landscape got and soon I’d rest among palm trees and pedal along green rice fields. The first big city of Ubon Ratchathani was a pleasant surprise, too. Many cute cafes and some street art made it a joy to walk around. I was also lucky to be there during a big parade where the bones of Buddha were carried from one place to another and many Buddhists from places as far away as India arrived to watch the holy procession. I also got invited for dinner by a local Thai woman who was delighted that I visited her hometown and wanted to make sure I had the best possible start 😃. The rest of the week was filled with acquainting myself with the different roads: the smaller the number on the highway, the bigger and busier it is. Best are the rural highways with the blue signs and numbers: good condition and very little traffic. But above all I made acquaintance with many police officers as I took advantage of the “police hotels”. A form of fatigue management where drivers can stop at highway police stations and enjoy a free night of accommodation. Coffee included. The hospitality was even bigger for me as a cyclist: I always got water and food offered, sometimes even fruit or other local delicacies. 🙏🏻 A first warmshowers host topped the first week off: even though my host was very busy, she made time to show me around and I even got invited to a meditation class the next day! A unique experience where I didn’t understand anything but was filled with gratitude from all the kindness around me. ☺️ #twowheelsontour #2wheelsontour #cyclingthailand #exploringthailandbybike #femalecyclist #soloadventurer #shewentwild #shewhowanders #solocyclist

My time housesitting in Michigan has come and gone. I'm camping for a few days at one of my favorite places, and then will head out on my next bike trip.  I'll miss River and the cozy condo! And it will be hard to say goodbye to new friends. I'm grateful to everyone who took the time to connect with me. When I drove here in January, this area was a blank spot on the map. Now it's a really special place. The friendships I made here have changed the scope of my perspective in ways I never could have predicted. That's the magic of people, place, and the wide unknown. ✨️ I'm also really happy to have connected with the family I housesat for. I woke up every day in their bed, with their pictures on the wall. This was a really kind family with a lot of openess to the world. In October 2024, New Zealand’s Hump Ridge Track will officially become the country’s 11th Great Walk. Like the Milford Track, this 61km trail traverses high-alpine ridgelines in Fiordland National Park, but that’s where the commonalities end. 🏔️ Upgrades on the three-day tramp (hike) include the option to get your pack helicoptered up to the hut on the first day (saving you from schlepping it up a roughly 900-metre elevation gain) 🚁, hot showers (!) 🚿, private rooms with real beds and bedding 🛏️, and shops at the huts selling wine and meals.🍷 The Hump Ridge Track is also the only Great Walk to be community-owned and operated, meaning proceeds go back to projects in the community of Tuatapere, like predator (invasive species) eradication programs. 🐀 Best of all? While scoring a spot on the Milford Track can be harder than scoring tickets to a T-Swift show, bookings for the Hump Ridge can be made up to a year in advance. 🥾 . . . #humpridgetrack #humpridge #tuatapere #newzealand #aotearoa #greatwalksnz #southisland #shetravels #tmactravel #travelwriter #freelancejournalist #astw_inc #nzmustdo #kiaoranz #dosomethingnewnz #destinationNZ #KiwiPics #NewZealandGuide #wonderlustnewzealand #gottalovenz #newzealandwander #ifyouseeknz #amongthewild #womenwhohike #blistersandbliss #likeamountaingirl #shewentwild #shehikes #wildwalks

Last year when I crossed Mt. Lemmon on my way to the start of the Great Divide, my generic bike rack cracked. I ziptied it together and kept riding. Every thousand miles or so it would break in a new place, and I'd add more zip ties. By the time I finished the Great Divide, the thing was hanging on by threads.  I FINALLY got a new rack and I'm so excited! I chose Old Man Mountain because I know these suckers are built to last. I'm super excited to test out the Old Man Mountain Divide rack with the Old Man Mountain Ponderosa Panniers for my next bike trip.  The Old Man Mountain Divide rack has a 55lb weight limit (which increases to 70 lbs with their fit kit), can be installed on either the front or rear, and can fit any bike, including ebikes. 🔥 @oldmanmountainracks #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #konabikes #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure #oldmanmountain

Who’s keen to hike one of the most beautiful trails in all of Australia?! ☀️ From rugged mountain paths lined with wild flowers to red gorges, canyons and waterholes, the Larapinta track is STUNNING! Spend your days trekking through the centre of Australia, taking a path not many get to explore! And what a better way to recover from the day than finding a waterhole to jump into followed by a gentle yoga practice before gathering around the fire to tell stories about the day?! And did we mention the gazillion star view? The trail is actually about 225kms long but don’t worry we aren’t doing the whole thing (this time 😜)! Instead, we chose all the best parts and created a 7 day supported adventure which means you only need to carry a day pack during the hike and we will take care of the rest! Girls trip anyone?!!

What does it mean to create and capture an authentic moment?  So many people asked how I take my own photos when I’m biking alone, that I wrote about it for The Radavist. (Link in bio.) “Shooting Solo” was meant to be a practical explanation of my very simple strategies for solo photography. But once I started to write, I realized there was more to the story.  This article became a larger reflection on the relationship between subject and object, presence and product. It’s about being human in nature and female in the world. It’s about what it means to capture moments of authentic happiness, while seeing yourself as part of a larger story. ✨️ #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #revelatedesigns #bearvault #konabikes #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

A pretty cool ice cave ❄️

A typical day with all its ups and downs on the bike (here at the Bovalen loop in Laos): Wow, what a day today! It started well with delicious breakfast in a beautiful homestay with fellow (bike) travellers. We started late but faced a super fun downhill for the first 10km or so where our paths diverged. Soon after, I met another cyclists couple on the road. We had a quick chat, then I continued to an amazing waterfall where I spent the next few hours as I couldn’t get away from that refreshing and comfortable place! But then I had to face the repercussion of my decision: cycling in the afternoon heat on an empty stomach. Plus, there was a nice uphill waiting for me, steeper than the 1000m I had climbed just two days before. There was no shade, food or refreshing drinks in sight. Only the now boiling hot water I carried around. On top of that, my chain was rubbing against the front derailleur causing more friction and resistance. I had to get off the bike and push, my feet dragging along on the tarmac, no energy left to actually lift them. I was about to cry out of exhaustion. But I made it up, eventually. The road flattened and I was able to pick up speed. After many attempts I finally found some bread and a refreshing sugar cane drink (not making it easy for myself being a vegetarian 🤷🏻‍♀️) to get rid off that jittery feeling in my body. Newly energised, I stopped a few more times to get snacks for the next day (lesson learned!). With the sun already setting I then arrived at a beautiful Homestay recommended by other cyclists. The room is clean and has a fan to help me cool down during the night. They even provided a veggie dinner for my hungry stomach. Tired I’m now lying in the comfy bed of the Homestay. I feel how this whole journey makes me stronger. I am not ashamed of my emotions. I’m able to feel them, give them room to pass. I’m happy and grateful for all that happened today. Even though it was hard, I know there’s always something beautiful waiting on the other side ☺️ #twowheelsontour #2wheelsontour #adayonthebike #bikelife #bikeyouring #cyclingsea #cyclinglaos #solofemaleadventurer #talesfromtheroad #veloweltweit #shewentwild #solofemaletravel

* * * #parquetayrona #caribe #colombia #loveyourplanet #backpackerlife #nomadlife #freeandwild #shewentwild #viajarespaña #viajarcolombia #ecotravel #bosquenuboso #passionpassport #lonelyplanet #teyumakke

Last year I spent over eight months on my bike, and along the way I got to try out some new gear. Some items didn’t work so well, fell apart, or were just inappropriate, so I don’t ever mention those! But other items were awesome and I’m happy to report back on how those worked for me.  @revelatedesigns was one of my favorite new brands to try. I purchased the Ranger Frame Bag before my trip and used it the whole way. While I was riding, Revelate also sent me some other items to test out: the Revelate Designs Handlebar Harness, the Egress Pocket, The Gas Tank, and the Mag Tank.  All my Revelate gear was fantastic and I’ve grown to appreciate the ruggedness and design considerations of the whole Revelate lineup. If you have any questions on these please feel free to ask in the comments. My bike trips are always unique journeys and I tend to do things my own way. I’m always tinkering with experiments, haha! Last year one of my favorite experiments was to ride with a @bearvault Bear Canister that doubled as a writing desk. This was made possible with the Revelate Designs Harness, which I reviewed recently for @thegearjunkie. If you’re curious about this setup and how it worked, I linked the review in my bio.  These are all photos from my 2023 trip. Thanks for the awesome gear, Revelate! I got back from my camping trip and jumped straight into a conversation with the wise and wonderful Christine Raine. Christine is the host of the Heroine's Journey Podcast, where she explores stories of transformation and self discovery.  We talked about my 2023 bike ride, women's quest for agency, the body as an oracle of truth, and how nature calibrates the soul to wholeness.  If our conversation makes it onto Season 2 of the podcast, it'll come out this summer and I'll include a link in my newsletter. The Heroine's Journey Sesaon 1 is available at christineraine.org. I especially loved episode 11, "Integration and Closure," where Christine tells her own story with beautiful, candid insight.  In addition to hosting The Heroine's Journey, Christine is an empathy activist and the founder of ConversABLE, a global empathy movement and organization based in Costa Rica.  Christine and her work have inspired me for many years now. It's always a joy to learn from her. ✨️❤️ @chrisdanzante @theheroinesjourneyproject #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

* * * #mendihuaca #santamarta #colombia #nomadlife #backpackerlife #freeandwild #passionpassport #loveyourplanet #tayrona #shewentwild

I’m often drawn to write about what it’s like to move through difficult emotional cycles. I'm able to do this because I know something important: we all go through weird shit!! We all wake up in the morning, open our eyes, and wonder about the world. We’re all here on a spinning planet and it’s total madness. I celebrate that wonder and that madness and all the spiraling weirdness in between.  I also see these stories as a way of drawing roadmaps through process. Our society casts the emotional self as intangible, chaotic, unreliable. But what if it’s not? What if it’s built from exquisite structure, from patterns that can be read and worked with, from pathways of inner knowing that always lead to joy? These are the roadmaps I’m interested in charting.  I've been getting some beautiful messages from people who connected with my story, Here For This. Thank you. ✨️These photos are from the desert where I wrote that story. #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

Sometimes the grittiest thing you can do is love yourself. Sometimes the biggest journey is the one where you stay open to a complex world. "Here For This" is the story of my 2023 bike ride down the Pacific Coast, and what it meant to face hard truths along the way.  Adventure narratives often pit people against their bodies, against nature, and against each other.  In "Here For This" I wanted to tell a different kind of adventure story: I wanted to show what it's like to trust your body, to return to nature, and to be embraced by a world that owes you nothing.  This is the truth that rose from this journey, so it's the story I had to tell. This essay does not cast me as a glamorous character, haha!! But hopefully it does shed light on what it's like to fight hard for wholeness, for connection, and for the magic that comes from being fully here.  Thank you to my fabulous editor Carolyne @roadsidefires for believing in this story, nurturing it, and seeing it through! Thank you to the whole Adventure Cycling team for putting it all together. And thank you to everyone who helped me along my trip, especially all the people who appear in these pages. I wrote this story nearly a year ago, from a cave in the desert. This last year has been a really happy one for me. ✨️ #worldbybike #worldbycycling #biketocamp #bikeadventure #biketrip #biketour #bikeride #bikepacking #outdooroffice #workfromthewild #remotework #outdoors #bikepacking #adventurecycling #outside #outdooroffice #shewentwild #sheexplores #adventure

Travelling solo as a woman (by bike) I’ve been told many times that I’m brave to be travelling alone as a woman but I always struggled to see it that way - until now. So far I’ve been exploring mainly western countries and always felt safe. This changed when I arrived in Vietnam. Here, it was the first time I had a few, unpleasant experiences with creepy guys. Nothing ever really happened, (I’ve been followed by guys or asked by a local if he could come back later -after showing me a place to pitch my tent- to “confide in me” as the translation app told me) apart from a panic attack, but these encounters have shaped my future travels. Now I question my choices of clothing or routes to be taken or places to pitch my tent. Is my shirt showing too much cleavage? Camping next to several fisherman along a river looks kinda inviting. Do I really have to go down that empty path to find the perfect lunch spot when there’s no one around except one guy? In order to stay safe, I’ve opted to find shelter at Buddhist temples. I’m perfectly happy to pitch my tent, but nevertheless I experienced incredible kindness and generosity. I was lucky to ask at a temple run by nuns the first time as I’m not allowed to stay with monks as a woman as I learned later. I was given a bed (even though a basic one), dinner and breakfast and even some snacks for the road. Once I was surrounded by a horde of children watching me have dinner as the temple housed an orphanage. I had interesting conversations with a nun who asked me stay and become a Buddhist nun as well, being single, childfree, over 40 and a vegetarian on top obviously represented the perfect condition. While I’ve lost that carefreeness I had before when travelling alone, I’ve gained new experiences because of it. I’m learning to adapt to current circumstances, but I’m always grateful for the experiences ☺️🙏🏻 #solotraveling #solofemaletraveler #shewentwild #shewhowanders #lifelessonsasawoman #femaleadventurer #femalecyclist #vietnam #travellingvietnam #solofemaletraveller
