While I may be late to the party for Black Maternal Health Week, in my mind I am right on time for it because Black mamas are important everyday AND it’s also Cesarean (c section) Awareness month. As a survivor of 2 c-sections, 16 months apart, I can truly say the whole process is one I will never forget. The pain, limited mobility, having to depend so heavily on the people around me, and the healing…it’s a lot! Not to mention, the hospital released me to my own devices after 2 days! No medical team to look after me at home to make sure I was okay. If there was an emergency, it was on me (and my tribe) to identify it and seek help immediately. SO MUCH! Thankfully I didn’t have any complications, but that does not hold true for so many women who look like me. During this month, and throughout the year, let’s encourage each other, pay attention and listen to our bodies, and exert just as much time and energy into ourselves as we pour into our families and others. Whether you are a career mum, stay-at-home mum or a mumpreneur, at times, you will need to rely on a support system to help you. For some of us, it is the neighbour who lovingly watches over your baby while you are at work. It could.also be the ever-reliable nanny or your child’s class teacher who helps with your kids’ homework. It can also be your BFF whose child attends your child’s school & helps with school runs. For so much of my life, I suppressed parts of myself to fit into certain spaces and make others comfortable. Since my divorce, I’ve focused on embracing my unique personality and accepting my flaws, including traits I was criticized for, like talking too much, too loudly, or being opinionated. Surprisingly, these aspects of my personality are now guiding me closer to my purpose and career. This season has brought unexpected opportunities my way because I’ve become more comfortable in my skin. I’m truly grateful for the people who encourage me to be authentic and for the spaces where I can amplify my message. Remember, it’s important to embrace all aspects of yourself, even what you may perceive as flaws or shortcomings. They can be gifts and unique talents in disguise, leading you towards your passion and purpose. This week is Black Maternal Health Week This is important to me because pregnancy & childbirth have been challenging for me and my family. One of our most traumatizing birthing experiences was three years ago with our daughter Melodi. I was having contractions at 20 weeks & 2 days but was told there was nothing they could do and to follow up with my doctor the next day. Thank God for the head nurse on duty that night, a woman that looked like me, who pushed for me to be given a bed and admitted. Before they could fully get me set up in the room I gave birth to my daughter. Unfortunately, immediately after she came into world on January 4th, 2021, her heart stopped and she wasn’t breathing. Melodi is now with our Lord in heaven. Fast forward 4 months...I became pregnant with our daughter Yara. This time my husband and I decided to hire a Black midwife and doula for an at home birth. However, the Lord had other plans… After going the hospital and being sent home the week before then again the day before, our daughter Yara was born on November 2nd, 2021 at 29 weeks via emergency c-section. I’ve been holding my breath for the last few weeks and I can finally exhale (just a little) 😮💨 I have officially made it further this pregnancy than I did my last 🎉 With Ty I was hospitalized at 28ish weeks with severe preeclampsia and he was born just a couple weeks later. This time I’m skating by (shakily lol) with no hospitalizations and still on track for my delivery day! In honor of Black Maternal Health Week (April 11-17), I post this with a thankful heart. In the United States, a vast amount of the statistics are still startling for black women: “In the U.S., black women are 3 times more likely to die from pregnancy related causes than white women.” I developed postpartum preeclampsia one week after having Raegan. I never had blood pressure problems before, during, or after pregnancy. After giving birth, I was hospitalized two additional times with stroke/seizure level blood pressure readings. My only symptom was swelling. I thank God for using my Mama to save my life. She persistently said: “Something is not right.” Her intuition saved my life. Love you, Mama! This is a drawing/voiceover animation called ‘The Foods’ by my eldest child, Ajna. 〰️ Ajna has been training herself in drawing since she was four years old. She draws for the love of it, but we also encourage her in this craft, letting her know that, with investment, time and continued work, this can also become a career path. 〰️ Ajna is, only, six … turning seven in July but we are training her to understand that work, though important to surviving and thriving on earth, does not have to be dreary and boring. 〰️ I am inspired by Ajna’s love of drawing and it reminds me of my own self. As a child (around ages 10-12) I remember that I would make little comics from my imagination. Writing and drawing were practices that I used to entertain myself amidst not having much access to technology, growing in Jamaica, and dwell in my creative energies. I did not receive the guidance, until later in my teen years from various teachers in high school, that I could pursue creative careers. Now, as a budding creative entrepreneur and full time mother, I find myself immersing, more and more, into understanding the importance of creative expression and how that ties into our soul purpose and aligned life work. 〰️ It’s, truly, amazing to see how certain traits carry over to our children, though in unique expressions, and beautiful how The Most High aligns for us to deepen on our paths of self understanding through our children’s journey through this earth. 〰️ As my children continue to grow, I am growing, too. As they learn, I am learning too. I am grateful to get this opportunity to experience life, learn and evolve with children.

It’s been a busy Monday, and I just realized it’s the last week of quarter 3. Whew that went fast! Yesterday I hit 20K on my Youtube channel. Though I’m excited about the growth it really had me thinking. I’ve been on Instagram for twice as long and have half the followers. Now this is not about the numbers at all but… When I first started Youtube, it went well immediately for me. I saw new things happen in my business because of it. I was so excited that I went all in on the platform. From that point I told myself I was going to focus on Youtube until I hit my goal of 10,000 subscribers....that happened in less than a year. Why is that? Focus was the determining factor. What you focus on will flourish. Read that again. See I have spent the last year treating my Youtube channel like a business. That focus has paid off in more ways than one. Yet my Instagram has been the hobby I do when I have time or when I feel like it, so the results that I yielded from my efforts make sense.
