Lottie asked me at her annual well visit today if I “want to be a doctor someday.” 👩🏼⚕️ … bless her. Isn’t that such adorable perspective? I love her confidence in me. Thinking that her 41 year old mama who is an HR Leader could just casually go back to 10+ years of school and become a doctor one day. (Some may say, “never say never!” But I truly say never. I faint when I have blood drawn! 🫠) I don’t make all of the kiddo extra-curricular appointments that fall during the work day, but I keep doctor visits as sacred as possible. ❤️Reminds me of those precious milestone appointments with just me and my babies over maternity leave. (Even though many of them were filled with tears as I struggled so much with breast feeding 😕). Lottie had her hearing test at her appointment today and seeing her in those headphones reminded me of her hearing test at the hospital when she was a newborn. I showed Lottie that picture today from when she was two days old and she asked if she “raised her hand for the doctor when she heard a sound then too.” 😂 She’s such a sketch … love her so much. Does benzoyl peroxide cause cancer? 👀 We’ve been using benzoyl peroxide (BPO) products for YEARS to treat acne. Common BPO skincare products you’ve probably heard of include Proactiv and PanOxyl. ...So what’s this about it causing cancer? ✋🏼This is something we’re still learning, and additional testing will be performed. 🍨Here’s the scoop. An independent study done by Valisure, a company the US Dept of Defense hires to check the quality of drugs, showed that BPO products break down into benzene, a known carcinogen. This was especially true when the product was heated to higher temperatures. 📈The FDA allows up to 2 parts per million of benzene in a product if it is absolutely necessary for manufacturing. In this study, 19 of the 66 products tested had > 2 parts per million of benzene on day 0 at room temperature. 🔥 When heated to 98.6 F (human skin temp), of the 5 BPO products tested, 1 had > 10 parts per million of benzene, and all 5 had >2 parts per million. ☝🏼So the problem is with decomposition of the products rather than contamination. What do we do now❓ Studies will be ongoing- the FDA and USP will be looking into this further. In the meantime, there are some things you can do to help slow decomposition of your BPO skincare products! 🛑Refrigerate your BPO at all times. Don’t keep it in the shower as you’ve likely done. 🛑Throw it away after 3 months of use. 🛑Don’t keep it in your car. Shouldn’t be too hard. The good news is there are plenty of alternative treatments for acne that don't include BPO!
