𝐀 𝐁𝐥𝐨𝐨𝐝𝐲 𝐍𝐨𝐬𝐞 The Polish Air Force in action 🟥⬜️ On 1 September 1939, faced with an enemy superior in numbers, just like their army compatriots the Polish Air Force began a fierce resistance. Although the tide could not be stemmed, the opening day of the conflict saw great success for the Polish aircrew. Despite the first casualty at Luftwaffe hands happening at dawn, 20 minutes later a PZL P.11 claimed a first victory for the allies, downing a Ju 87, before going on to bag two Do 17s. That same morning, Polish fighters intercepted a group of 70 He 111s and Do 17s en route to Warsaw, and successfully forced the Luftwaffe formation to abandon its mission. The following day, 9 P.11s shot down 7 Do 17s without loss - an inspiring result. But the Blitzkrieg on land was overwhelming, and the country could not be saved. Op 2e Pinksterdag 1941 werd op het Grebbekerkhof een monument onthuld ter nagedachtenis van de in mei 1940 gesneuvelde militairen die organiek behoorden tot het 8e Regiment Infanterie. Dit regiment was gelegerd in de Menno van Coehoornkazerne te Arnhem en had in mei 1940 als hoofdtaak de verdediging van de Grebbeberg. Het monument werd vervaardigd in de steenhouwerij van dhr. J.H. Hofhuis te Enschede naar ontwerp van dhr. W.Chr. Jens, architect in Arnhem. De afwerking was in handen van dhr. Anneveld. De heren Hofhuis en Anneveld waren beiden oud-Grebbestrijders. Het 8 R.I.-monument is een betonnen gedenkzuil waarop 233 namen van gesneuvelde militairen zijn aangebracht. 213 van hen sneuvelden bij de Slag om de Grebbeberg, de overige 20 elders in Nederland. In 2010 werd het monument, vanwege de slechte staat, grondig gerestaureerd. Het 8 R.I.-monument vormt sinds de onthulling in 1946 het decor van de jaarlijkse 8 R.I.-herdenking op 2e Pinksterdag. Deze herdenking wordt georganiseerd door de "Vereniging 8e Regiment Infanterie - 1940" in samenwerking met Defensie. Een bijzonder indrukwekkend onderdeel van deze herdenking vormt het oplezen van de namen van de gesneuvelde kameraden. Meer over deze vereniging in de opmerkingen hieronder. Op 20 mei 2024 a.s. zal de "Verenging 8e Regiment Infanterie - 1940" haar laatste 2e Pinksterdag-herdenkingsplechtigheid houden op de Grebbeberg. Om 12:15 uur zal er vanaf hotel-restaurant 't Paviljoen (Grebbeweg 103-105 te Rhenen) een Stille Tocht vertrekken richting het Militair Ereveld. Om 12:30 uur zal de herdenking op het Ereveld aanvangen en zo rond 13:45 uur worden afgesloten met een defilé langs de graven. Eenieder die deze herdenking wil bijwonen is van harte welkom! Wil je meelopen in de Stille Tocht, zorg dan dat je uiterlijk 12:00 uur bij 't Paviljoen aanwezig bent. This medal, with a Bronze Star for citation in the regiment's order, belongs to a member of my family. Regarding this family member, also in this publication, is his demobilization record. The most interesting, for us collectors, is the mention of '’Captured in Lille on May 29, 1940’’ during Operation Dynamo! This document is not in the best condition, but to me, it's a true historical document of my family! French soldiers of WWII are often unjustly ridiculed! Deze Duitse foto is vermoedelijk eind 1940/begin 1941 gemaakt op het Ehrenfriedhof Grebbeberg en toont van rechts naar links de volgende vier graven in de voormalige 5e Duitse grafrij: - Konrad Grund (Staffelmann, 11./SS Regiment Germania), geboren 9-12-1920 te Zessel (Landkreis Oels, huidige Polen) en op 7-8-1940 verdronken in Zutphen. - Otto Mohnhaupt (Staffelmann, 10./SS Regiment Germania), geboren 21-12-1921 te Kiliansroda (deelstaat Thüringen) en op 2-9-1940 door onbekende oorzaak overleden te Apeldoorn. - Johann Hummer (Rottenführer, 14./SS Regiment Deutschland), geboren 9-5-1919 te Obermühlau (Oostenrijk) en op 22-10-1940 door onbekende oorzaak overleden te Amersfoort. - Peter Faas (Kanonier, Stab Artillerie-Abteilung 263), geboren 23-9-1910 te Lüxem (Rheinland-Pfalz) en op 23-10-1940 aan een embolie overleden te Utrecht. Van zijn herbegrafenis op de Grebbeberg plaatste ik op 6 juni 2020 een foto die werd gemaakt bij de entree van de begraafplaats. De informatie op het grafkruis van Otto Mohnhaupt bevat de nodige fouten, zo komen het vermelde legeronderdeel (11e compagnie) en de plaats van sneuvelen (Zutphen) niet overeen met de officiële papieren/graf op Ysselsteyn. Interessanterweise gehört Big Diomede zu Russland 🇷🇺, während Little Diomede den USA gehört 🇺🇸. Der Wasserabschnitt zwischen diesen beiden Inseln ist nur etwa 2,5 Meilen breit und friert im Winter tatsächlich ein. Le vieil homme, la petite fille et le Blitz, tel pourrait être le titre du nouvel album d’Olivier Grenson. Si vous aviez été captivés par son magnifique dessin dans La Fée assassine, alors vos yeux seront à nouveau émerveillés de retrouver la douceur de son trait, malgré la période troublée à laquelle se déroule ce nouveau récit. 1940, les Stukas de l’aviation allemande bombardent Londres, la bataille d’Angleterre fait rage. Aussitôt que les sirènes retentissent, les Londoniens courent se mettre à l’abri dans les couloirs du métro. Alors qu’elle a échappé à la garde de son accompagnatrice, la petite Mary erre seule dans les rues. C’est ainsi qu’elle est prise en charge par Isaac, qui l’entraîne vers le refuge le plus proche. Le vieux monsieur va prendre soin de l’enfant et, pour la rassurer, commence à lui raconter l’histoire du “prince qui vivait au pays au-dessus des nuages”. L’alerte terminée, la population remonte à la surface. L’ancien jardinier en fait de même avec Mary. Mais que faire d’une si petite fille quand on est un vieux monsieur, veuf de surcroît ? La seule solution lui semble d’aller demander de l’aide auprès de Scotland Yard. Mais les services de police sont débordés par le nombre important de personnes disparues. Isaac va devoir attendre et prendre en charge la petite jusqu’au lendemain. C’est ainsi, au gré des alertes quotidiennes, que la petite fille et le vieil homme vont apprendre à se connaître. Ce dernier va profiter de leurs séjours souterrains pour lui inventer un monde fantastique où la lumière et les couleurs vont l’aider à pallier, momentanément, la dureté de la guerre et l’absence de sa maman. Le Partage des mondes nous entraîne dans une histoire où, malgré la folie des hommes, la bonté d’un homme va apporter à un petit être émerveillé des moments de joie, de découvertes, de chaleur et de rêves. Un récit incroyablement humain qui nous permet d'admirer le splendide travail graphique d’Olivier Grenson, qu’il soit dans des tons grisés ou bien dans une profusion de couleurs éclatantes et chatoyantes.
