And we have had a lot of them recently. I’m tired of the lack of unity and support within the law enforcement community. I’m tired of the pettiness. The passive aggressive social media posts. The blocking. The competition. The unnecessary department politics. All of it. I’m not saying that we should just get all get along and be best friends. But we should at least be able to show each other mutual respect. How can we say that the rest of society needs to respect and appreciate law enforcement when we don’t even treat each other that way? There are literal life and death issues that we’re facing right now. Maybe let’s spend more time on improving training, supporting officers and officers’ families mental health, supporting each other on and off the clock, rallying to support families of fallen officers, etc… instead of being petty, backbiting, undermining, and selfish. But maybe that’s just me.

And that it’s okay to feel overwhelmed sometimes. If I’ve learned anything being an LEOW, it’s to prioritize family time and between you and your officer, prioritize each other, ALWAYS. Over everything else. Recently I had a conversation with someone new to first responder life, and they made a comment about how they’ll want them to pick up all the OT possible to bring home the extra $$$. I just chuckled but I wish I had told them to take a step back and embrace the time their husband is home and hold them close when they are. Because you’ll miss them when they’re gone. And the abnormality of this life is, it’s not a guarantee they will come home after their shift. God, I hate even typing that. And I hate that that is a reality for so many, especially lately. 😓 My heart and prayers go out to those Blue Families that have had to make that ultimate sacrifice. I pray every night for all the men and women in blue..just to make it home. That’s not normal.

I always pray for my husband’s safety. Sometimes I pray in depth, but usually it’s a quick “please keep him safe” prayer so my mind doesn’t have time to wander with the what-ifs. I don’t freak out when he tells me things. It’s “just another day” in law enforcement and you do become de-sensitized to it. But it does feel like a gut punch sometimes. It’s a hard position to be in. You can’t dwell on the dangers of the job because you’ll go crazy. But it also feels wrong to be bingeing another show or surfing social media while your husband is out there potentially fighting for his life. I don’t really have a point to this post. There’s no advice segment, no profound thoughts. Just me sharing our real life. I’m so thankful for the safety of my husband. But I also want to be careful not downplay the seriousness of the job. They have hundreds, maybe even thousands of “close calls.” They happen all the time. They never make the news. They never get brought up in roll call. Sometimes they don’t even get talked about at home. But they happen. And they often carry a pretty hefty mental and emotional effect with them. Don’t demean or negate struggling with something because “it could’ve been worse.” If you’re struggling, reach out to someone. Talk to your spouse. Talk to a trusted friend or family member. Seek counsel. Take medication if you need to. There’s no shame in any of those things. Just please, don’t struggle with it alone 💙
Since becoming Lector Coordinator for my church, I have noticed so much growth in my faith. I spent the Lenten season growing my relationship with God. I began by reading devotionals and my Bible before allowing the world and social media to fill me with the chaos of the world. This is a journey I’m excited to continue! I had a follower ask what paternity/maternity leave other departments offered. I put up a question box and got way more responses than I expected. I think these things are important to talk about, so I’m going to leave this post here for y’all to discuss in the comments.
These words aren’t mine. They’re the words of a LEOW who lost her husband in the line of duty over 3 years ago. Read them again. I asked her if I could share her words here because I think this is something every LE spouse needs to hear. Law enforcement may be your spouse’s profession, but it doesn’t just affect him. It’s a partnership. You have to have your partner’s back. Are you protecting your home from outside stress? Are you protecting your marriage from resentment? Do you defend your husband to others? We talk about our LEO’s calling a lot. But what about the calling of the LE spouse? Because we are definitely called to this life. Nobody would put up with the worry, the crazy schedules, and lousy pay without it. You are called to this just as much as your spouse is called to be a cop. Don’t downplay or demean your calling because you’re not the one with the badge. Your job is important. It’s necessary. It enables your spouse to be the best cop they can be.
My heart sank as I heard those words from my 4 year old’s mouth after she got a glimpse of what was on my phone. I don’t know how many times we’ve had this conversation. I swallowed my emotions, put on a brave face, and confidently convinced my sweet, innocent 4 year old that there’s nothing she needs to worry about. I’m not going to lie to my kids. But I’m also not going to give them information that their brains aren’t mature enough to handle. These are just some of the moments that LEOWs experience that the majority of the population just doesn’t understand. So if you’ve had to put on a brave face for your kids today, just know that I’m right there with you. Days like today make this life extra hard. Just remember, God is ready and willing to take our burdens. All we have to do is lay them at his feet. Pray for Officer Diller’s family, friends, coworkers. This is a pain too deep to explain, too hard to talk about. A pain that should have been entirely avoided if certain people had actually done their jobs to make laws to keep bad guys in prison and if certain people had actually prosecuted to the fullest extent. If you’re angry, you should be. If you’re not, then there’s something wrong with you.
Get clear on your goals. Be intentional with how you are going to achieve those goals. Joy and success are sure to follow. ❤️ Intentionality works in every part of your life. At a point in his training as a cop, that line went away. Back to the wall in restaurants, not a fan of big crowds with his family, etc. So instead of work life balance, it’s paid work and unpaid work. There’s a certain level of awareness that an officer has at all times. As a wife, the sooner I realized that, the easier for our family. I choose the chair with my back to the door always, i suggest the activities that give us space to move around. He feels more at ease with this because he knows I understand. We enjoy getting out into nature more. He feels more relaxed grinning down a bear than walking a city street with his family there. #IYKYK. This is for the moms who don’t know how they can get back to where they were “before”. Before….work? Kids? Aging? I’ve always been an athlete (never very talented!!!) but I dabbled in a few things- soccer, track, cross-country skiing, colorguard. I never had to worry much about what I ate because I felt good being active + high school metabolism 👀 But then it was work and kids and all my time seemed to disappear and I didn’t know how to get it back. It didn’t feel like it was possible for me to do the things for myself anymore. I’ve been working on this for a few years now and I’ve found a pretty good routine despite have 100,000 less hours of time. If you’re in the trenches with a newborn, GIRL you focus on that, looking back I now realize I wasn’t wrong feeling like I didn’t have that additional time 😴 But if you’re getting out or past that stage, it’s possible- you don’t have to give up on yourself! I’m here to show women that you can be a corporate crushing, laundry day badass, dishwasher-filling, cat-vomit cleaning amazing person that you are AND still feel good and take care of yourself for the long haul. Since the way we are working in the corporate world seems to be changing why not change the way we take care of our employees too. I've thought for a long time, if I had my own company I'd love to give them an hour lunch break for self-care. Whether that's working out, reading a book...whatever makes them feel rejuvenated! But for some jobs, that's also just not the nature of the work, including mine. I've recently started being okay with the fact that balance doesn't exist. There will be seasons where your workload feels like you can't give an ounce more and others where you can pour into yourself and your family. Sometimes you're juggling glass balls, and rubber balls, and you have to let those rubber balls drop, but you'll pick them back up next week. For the past 5 years I've been coaching virtual fitness groups and for the month of November I am focusing on guiding those that are in the corporate world into a fitness and nutrition routine. I have found that doing this with others- even from a distance, help to solidify a morning routine before the rest of the world needs us. In the past month I’ve seen… A challenger’s mom stick with workouts for 30 days 🥹 Someone complete their 30th day of their program when it was the last thing they wanted to do that day 💪 A challenger noticed cellulite disappearing! You can’t put a price on confidence 💁♀️ We work towards doing something realistic for our busy lives by working out at home #teamnostuffingkidsintocarseats- but this is all something each of these challengers did for themselves- that’s the coolest part! Next challenge starts this Monday, October 17th and we’re smashing pumpkins! 🎃 You’ll get Game Day recipes for meal prep, and 25 squats or drinking 100 oz. water will smash a pumpkin for you- and we’re handing out TREATS 🍬 🍭 🛍 I always say it takes 6 months to start noticing changes- that brings us to spring time! It’s been a whirlwind!
