The first transplants of 2024 are in the ground! These pansies are growing up gorgeous already. Some of you may be wondering why I would plant so many pansies in a cut flower garden, as we typically know them to be small, compact plants with short- stemmed (cute!) flowers. However, some growers are able to convince certain varieties of pansy to grow long, usable stems (@threebrothersblooms is one of them). I am obsessed with pansies regardless, but it's a dream of mine to one day hold a handful of pansies with 12" stems... Dahlia eye candy from last season, in celebration of the first dahlia shoots emerging in the greenhouse! I have several buckets with tubers pre-sprouting in that nice warm environment. Once they have grown a few sets of leaves, I will then pinch (remove) the central growing tips, and re- root them in soil blocks... where they will start growing into even more dahlia plants!! This method worked great for me last year, and I'm eager this season to significantly grow my dahlia supply. March is when I start sorting through all of the dahlia tubers we pulled up from last year's gardens, evaluating their condition, and dividing them (each dahlia plant produces several new tubers every year, which means our dahlia planting stock multiplies year over year - what a gift!). when you’re into something with your whole heart + passion + intent, lots of learning and trialling ensues. indigo, who is the feline equivalent of a city mouse/country mouse, and can’t decide if he prefers wool blankets indoors or carousing outdoors, is standing by a tray of what i define as february hope and experimentation. in the past couple of years i have grown ranunculus flowers like these in spring (see previous post to see a bouquet of their charm and stunning beauty) and have twice attempted to save the corms. this is usually done in later june after the corms have died back and collides with a schedule pages long of all the flower farm things to do. i scramble madly to stay on top and inevitably drop a few balls. last year i managed to save some and had a tray of this stunning chocolatey toned variety set out to cure under my sheltered back steps. i missed bagging them up to store indoors and they greeted me one late november day in early winter under the back steps, sprouting. i set the tray of corms down on my workbench, tossed on some soil and put them back under the steps. maybe i would try to transplant them and see how they did through winter. come january they were still there, happy enough with some rain but clearly still forgotten and not transplanted. i brought them indoors under our grow lights with an arctic blast approaching. they need protection from the deep cold we’d be getting. i watched them and noticed they were mostly thriving + greening up with lush leaves despite a brief infestation of aphids, and once the cold receded i brought them back outdoors to transplant. here they are, currently struggling a bit as they harden off, ready to go in and they have taught me a few things about resilience, picking up where we leave off, and keeping on trying and having some hope. i lost a few of the plants along the way but tried a few things and managed to save most of a variety i really adore. 🐈⬛ 🌸💕 . . . . #flowerpower #flowerfarm #flowerfarmer #grownnotflown #learningallthetime #indigo #lifewithindigo #flowerfarmerflorist #fieldtovase #rewildflowerfarm #fortlangleyflowers #flowersubscriptions #bouquetcsa #flowerfarmmusings

When farmer conventional wisdom says “go to bigger markets, “go where there’s more people”, you have proved otherwise. We are so lucky to have made the decision to retract from driving twice a week to bigger markets and cities, and have incredible flower lovers in such a small community where we farm. Immense gratitude to you this winter, when we need some motivation! February has become a busybody time of year for us, and a time of year where the daydreaming of new ideas and ways to make our farm more efficient switches in a blink to actualizing all those ideas. 💡 The days get a little longer and we want to work a little longer. Some dead of winter daily farm rituals; fluffing up hoop-house beds, covering & uncovering newly planted beds with frost protection, sowing & tending to tens of thousands of seedlings for spring harvests, in addition to ambitious infrastructure projects like painting the design-studio, or rebuilding our deer damaged fence line 🦌, or re-building heavy end walls that lead to injury. . . Our days are fuller in February. I designed some arrangements for tomorrow's wedding expo in la crosse and realized the color palette and flowers I had purchased for this vignette are pretty much exactly what we're planning to grow this coming season! I expect our Spring Flower Bouquet CSA to include these gorgeous colors, many of these flowers, and the soft textures of these designs. Dreamy! I can't wait to harvest armful of stock and ranunculus in just a few months 😍 Also, the soft yellow flowers in these are lisianthus, and we'll be growing these buttery-colored blooms too, and expect to have them blooming in time for our Fall Bouquet CSA share. I'm imagining them paired with the creamy-yellow dahlias we have on order and a fall crop of yellow stock - it will be sunshine in a vase 💛 DM me if you've got questions about our CSA program! CSA DAY 12: The people of POSY! Flower farming is physically demanding, emotional in all the ways, and overall very very intense & beautiful work. CSA DAY 11: Monarda, or as it's commonly known "Bee Balm" was a major crop on our farm last summer. Native to New England, Monarda attracted bees and butterflies aplenty and was a favorite foliage in our bouquets. Last year we grew 3 varieties of Monarda: Wild Bergamot, Spotted, and our favorite, Lemon. (pictured in order) We are always on the lookout for unique foliage and flowers that are native to New England. Natives benefit the local insect population and are generally are easier to grow, that's because they belong here!! Have any suggestions for natives that you grow and love? CSA DAY 9: The late summer production field in full bloom is a magical place to be. There's something newly open or taking on a different color or shape every single day. The early morning cool and stillness is my favorite time of day, a very good thing because that's when we do most of our harvesting. Our farm is located on 3 acres of historic farmland smack dab in the middle of a subdivision in West Peabody. When visitors arrive, they are always surprised at what we've managed to do in this unexpected area and frankly, so am I!! We are grateful for our fertile farmland and our unassuming location and excited to open up another half acre of land for flowers this year! Since our flower farm isn't open to the public, we do host a few Farm Tour + Pick your own bouquet nights throughout the season. Stay tuned to IG for more updates on that front. CSA DAY 7: Sweet Peas!! Scented, sensual, soft and springy, I first grew sweet peas in my plot @worcesterstgarden in Boston and fell in love. Then I grew them correctly on the farm, on a much larger scale and realized what a workhorse plant they truly are! The plants grow quickly once the conditions are right and produce a bumper crop of blooms until the weather gets too warm. Check out the Sweet Pea fence to my left in the first photo vs on the right in the second photo, just 3 weeks apart! This means our Spring Bouquet CSA members also get treated to at least one bunch of these delicate, delicious smelling stems to enjoy. Because the blooms are fragile, short lived, and don't ship well, they are perfectly suited as a specialty cut flower for our lovely local florists. So many reasons to grow and adore this Victorian beauty!

CSA DAY 5: The cool blues & purples are one of our favorite color palettes for Spring CSA Bouquets. Early spring when the weather is cool is when we grow the most true blue flowers like forget-me-nots, Bachelor's buttons and Pansies. Even flowers that "should" be white or pink tend to take on a bluish/purple tint in colder temps. As a total science nerd, I wondered why this was so I went to the interwebs for the answer. If you want to geek out with me please keep reading... Turns out the presence of chemicals called carotenoids are often responsible for red, orange, and yellow pigmentation in flowers, but another set of chemicals, the anthocyanins, are the most important determinants of blue and red flower color. Plants produce more anthocyanins at lower temps, making colors dependent on anthocyanins more intense at colder temps. Ah ha! Mother Nature's Genius strikes again! So cooool!!! The second photo is an example of the flower identifier included in the weekly CSA member email that accompanies each bouquet. The third is another cool blues CSA Bouquet from 2023. We've got a lot of blue planned for Spring 2024 including a new "true blue" Sweet Pea Variety!

CSA DAY 4: Ranunculus and Anemone are the backbone of our Spring Bouquet CSA Share, and also some of the most labor intensive flowers we grow. They are highly prized by florists and used widely in bridal work. To grow a great crop of these beauties, we pre-sprout them in my basement in crates of soil in February, then plant them in the field under low tunnels in March. Sometimes having to dig the tunnels out of the snow and crawl inside!! The weird sprouted corms slowly green up and form buds in April, and then bam, around mid-May they start producing gorgeous blooms and don't stop until it hits 80 degrees! This year we will be growing 10 different Italian & Israeli Anemone Varieties and 10 Ranunculus Varieties including Musa, a beloved Butterfly Ranunc! In total we plan to plant 3,500 corms! That's a ridiculous amount of Ranunculus & Anenome!! The last photo in this post is Orlaya which I had to include because it's another cool weather staple that makes it's way into a lot of the spring CSA Bouquets. This delicate looking white flower can survive a light frost and puts out the most gorgeous heart shaped petals. It self seeds and sometimes makes a second appearance in the late fall! What a gal!
CSA DAY 3: Because we harvest Tulips closed and in the "blushing bud" stage for maximum vase life, we rarely get to see tulips in their full glory, blown open wide exposing their beautiful throats and all of their petals like the bunches in the first photo. During the month of April as the weather heats up we harvest Tulips twice a day, early morning and at sunset. It's amazing how much they color up with just one day of sunshine.
