Raked the straw off our garlic today. It is one of my absolute favourite things to grow and so exciting to see the green garlic shoots already emerging from the soil. Last fall the lovely family from @takerootfest helped us cover all this garlic with straw. It was a great work party and with all the extra hands the work was quickly done. We hilled potatoes last week before a restful weekend away! We do this because potatoes grow new sprouts above the first “seed” potato. Back in the 80’s, Farmer Joe saw that the fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides that were commonly used in agriculture were harming workers and the environment. So he convinced his father, Joe Sr., to transition the farm over to organic. By 1986, the farm had transitioned completely over to organic farming and was certified organic by CCOF. We stay true to the ideals of organic for many reasons. One of the key reasons is that organic food production protects our health. It protects the health of farm workers. It protects the health of the environment and all the living creatures that share our space. It protects our customers. At just over 100 acres of production, we are a small farm. We are able to watch over and carefully monitor our crops. We are able to manage them with care, NOT with sprays. In fact, we do not use any sprays, not even kinds that are technically allowed under current regulations. We are excited to see organic production continue to grow and are thrilled with recent legislation that will help increase the percentage of organic production in California. Jimbo's, Seaside Market, People’s Co-op are three pillars in the local food economy. They walk the walk; that is, they truly source locally, just as they advertise. What’s more, they serve the community 7 days a week and are the leading natural grocers in San Diego. That’s why we are so happy to have them join us on the farm. Yesterday, about 50 people from these three markets that carry our produce came out to see the farm. We want to thank them for working with us, taking the effort to come out to the farm. They come to learn about what goes on behind the scenes so that they can understand what’s involved in food production and support us directly. It's a great partnership that we are grateful for. When you choose to buy from us at these local markets, the items are harvested and brought to market the next day versus when stores buy from distributors and the food sits around for days before it gets to the store. First day with flats outside. We are hardening these plants off to get them ready to be transplanted hopefully early next week. This is an important step and it acts as a transition from the cozy grow room space, to the unpredictable outdoor garden space. We leave the flats out in mild sun/wind, and increase time outside as they adjust to the elements. We have a steady supply of strawberries ripening for market. They are tasting sweeter than ever. Our blueberries are also extremely sweet. Delicious, local, organic cucumbers will be available this weekend: slicers, Kirby, and Persian cucumbers. Lots of zucchini, yellow gold bar, and eight ball squash will be available as well. Michael’s favorite, spring onions, are back. Throw these babies on the grill or in the oven to caramelize them. They taste amazing. Everything is harvested the day before it is sold at the farmers markets. It doesn’t get any fresher than that. Come out and support the local organic food system! We grow for you! What a deal! Lettuce, Carrots, Leeks, Cilantro, Swiss Chard, Cucumbers, Summer Squash, Citrus Mix, Hass Avocados, Blueberries, and Strawberries. That’s 11 items for only $40! Lettuce, Fennel, Broccolini, Summer Squash, Hass Avocados, Citrus Mix, and Strawberries. That’s 7 items for only $32! Strawberries are back in the small box, and both strawberries and blueberries are in the regular box! Summer squash and lettuce are also in both boxes. Try your squash raw; use lemon pepper seasoning, cilantro and lemon juice (freshly squeezed). Mix it up well and let it marinate for at least five minutes. If you get the small box, try your fennel in a salad. If you get the large box, don’t forget that you can chop up the chard stems and fry them like onions for your stir fry.
