I don't think there's a more significant day to make a post about this piece "The Firestarters" from my exhibition "from the Woods to the Soil" at @williamhumphreysartgallery . Today is Freedom Day 🇿🇦 and marks the 30th anniversary of the first democratic election in South Africa. Today is also #InternationalSculptureDay, and this is a piece I made in conversation with the dubbed 'father of South African sculpture' Anton Van Wouw and his bronze sculpture from 1907 'The Dagga Smoker' - which he considered one of his favourite pieces. When I was a child, my parents bought me the book "Anton Van Wouw The Smaller Works" by Alexander Edward Duffey, and I fell in love with his work, as a child I was mesmerized by the attention to detail (and this piece is one of his greatest examples). It was definitely a catalyst for my passion for representational sculpture and bronze casting (as his work has been for many South African sculptors). In this piece though I wanted to open a conversation with his work, and bring his work into a contemporary context, because South Africa is a very different place today to what it was 117 years ago when he made the work. Given the period in which he was producing work, there are many critical questions around his nameless representation of and relationship with the indigenous peoples he sculpted. I allude to this change in time and change in society, by inserting myself directly into the work, as a subject alongside the indigenous San man, working together towards the same goal of lighting a fire (which is a cental theme in the exhibition). The sculpture is also a digital sculpt, made and 3D printed during the residency to emphasise this difference in time in contrast to Van Wouw's antique bronze.
