Viana to Navarette, Rioja Spain 22km was covered with some speed today as we had fairly flat land to cover. The highlight was walking with the residents of Logrono, who were all out on their Sunday morning walk in the beautiful and huge park and lake between Logrono and Navarette #caminodesantiago #caninofrances

To walk the Camino you need to be fully committed to it. Although it’s a wonderful journey, the long hiking days up and down hills are hard. We have to start very early, right at sunrise preferably, to beat the heat of the day later on. An average day is 6-8 hours walking carrying our backpacks with all our stuff. In some regions there are more food available on the way, in others you need to bring your own. Books/Guides normally tell you where there is food available, but with the pandemic, many things have changed. We always need to be prepared. To sleep we normally stay at “albergues” with other pilgrims, which is another wonderful aspect of the journey, but its the luck of the draw. Some are wonderful, some not so much. Some offer rooms with 100+ people, some just 4, some even offer private rooms. You just need to see what you find when you decide to stop at a village. The dinners are always good. The local food is delicious regardless the region. When we are here we are all equal. We may be from many countries, diverse backgrounds, we may be teachers, nuns, cardiologists, engineers, managers, or even astronauts, but when we walk, we are all the same, as we should be. #buencamino #caninofrances #ultreia

Just finished *Road of Stars* by Edward Stanton ✨ There are shelves & shelves of books in which pilgrims account their travels along the Camino de Santiago de Compostela ❤️ Almost 1,200 years worth of documentation! Most of these documents, at least from the modern era, are not worth reading; however, Road of Stars is an exception 🌟 The author’s account is honest & funny & also scholarly, as he is a professor of Hispanic studies at the Uni of Kentucky 🌗 The book is a light-read, running to just under 200 pages, & is peppered with cogent asides on the myths & legends that animate the Camino 🌒 As is customary, he also touches upon the life-stories of his traveling companions, who are relatively nice real ppl 🌙 The must engaging parts of the book deal with the changing landscape of Spanish culture, as the book was written just after the Franco dictatorship 🌔 At this time, the Camino had yet to become a global tourist attraction, which meant that the author had the chance to exp the last vestiges of pilgrims customs from pre-modern times 🌏 He rarely paid for a bed at night, farmers invited him to their dinner tables, there were even bandits that haunted the road! I’m have a taste for reading about what Bakhtin called the “grotesque body,” so I was delighted by all the scenes about pilgrim injuries, their frustrations & doubts, their eating habits & diets, and the ways they piss & shit on the road ☀️ I’ve walked the Camino with @speculativearchaeology , & this book really spoke to the scared element of that adventure 🌺 🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿🌿 #camino #caminodesantiago #pilgrim #pelegrino #santiago #caninofrances #milkyway #spain #pilgrimage #bookstagram #edwardstanton

Today has been one of my favourite days on the camino so far. It started in the dark with rain and an ascent into O Cebreiro which was pretty exciting. It continued with walking through the clouds and stopping at every village for hot chocolate with Louisa, chats with lovely pilgrims and some delicious vegan breakfast (for lunch). I saw some faces from the first few days of the camino as well as new friends and honestly each time I met with people I felt a renewed energy and love for this journey. The individuals I’ve met here are so much a part of my camino that I cannot separate the walking from the talking anymore. The rain didn’t dampen anybody’s spirit and when we arrived in Triacastela in early afternoon the sun came out to welcome us. After catching up with some original camino family members, sharing a bottle of wine and doing laundry, I enjoyed my beautiful hostel, met a mother and daughter who gave me a bar of chocolate and some extra blister plasters and then headed out to explore. I meant to visit some key points of significance in the town but bumped into some familiar faces who were having a park picnic so ended up joining them. I topped the eve off with more wine and a pretty posh dinner -even tasting the local Galicia delicacy-octopus-thanks Paul! 😳When I walked up the stairs to my bunk bed I can honestly say that today has been fabulous and I’m ready for this last leg. Come on Santiago! #caninofrances #pilgrim

День 9. Palas del Rei - Arzua (28 km) С праздником! совершенно простым #spain #caninofrances #camino #santiago #mukatti #mukattitravelprojects #photoofworld #travelaroundtheworld #travelwithlove #travelforlife #newopportunities #newideasforfuture #mukattiscamino #nature #santiagodecompostela

5/9/2019, 11:37:45 PM

day 33: ribadiso to lavacolla [33.6 km/20.9 mi] last long day!!!! sunny and beautiful day that provided a really sweet ending to this journey. thought a lot about what I’ve learned and what is to come in the future. happened upon many pretty views and happy surprises including a random live concert - see my English pal Dave’s dance moves for some entertainment 💃🏻 also hi @taylorswift ur face has been on my pack for about 500 miles ily & I passed the THIRTEEN km marker today

5/5/2019, 7:13:01 PM

day 32: palas de rei to ribadiso [25.6 km/15.9 mi] looooooong and mentally tough day today as the real world seems to be getting closer and closer with the influx of new pilgrims and greater commercialization/noise on the trail ☹️ having a lot of mixed feelings about this coming to a close & definitely not looking forward to all the goodbyes that are to be said. on a lighter note, pulpo 🐙 has now become a daily tradition & albergues with a place to soak your tired feet are the BEST

5/4/2019, 9:16:31 PM

day 31: portomarin to palas de rei [24.8 km/15.4 mi] another day in the books!! had a very encouraging walk today thanks to a brief, yet meaningful conversation with the volunteers at @lafuentedelperegrino which set an important tone for how I want to look back on the time doing this🥰 got to place a pin on the map for sugar land at the donativo 🗺, made the sweetest new pal🐶, and ate some more pulpo 🐙 !!! still in awe over the beautiful views and terrain and people and really this entire experience

5/4/2019, 7:36:40 AM

day 30: sarria to portomarin [22.1 km/13.8 mi] passed the 100 km mark today🥳 busy day along the trail but thankful to still have moments of peace and tranquility😁 highlight of the day was definitely a line of livestock walking towards us on a verrrrry narrow trail in the middle of the day🐄

5/2/2019, 7:57:19 PM

day 29: triacastela to sarria [18.7 km/11.7 mi] officially in the last week of the camino and ya gal is feeling a lot of mixed emotions as this comes to a close😭 today was a chilly day of literally walking in the clouds at moments. spent much of today soaking up the last bit of peace and quiet as the way tends to get more and more crowded in the last 100 km. looooved getting to take today slowly, stop, and soak up the details of the path - the way things smelled, the colors around me, allll the things I hope to remember from this experience. also, saw my favorite Spanish poem painted on a rock and it made me the happiest🥰 srsly go look up “caminante, no hay camino” by Antonio Machado

5/1/2019, 9:36:12 PM

day 28: o cebreiro to triacastela [20.7 km/12.9 mi] today started out with a sweet sunrise right outside the albergue. spent much of the day descending the mountain that was climbed yesterday at a really peaceful pace, although we did run into a traffic jam at the end of the walk😜🐄 doing my best to soak up the last week of walking and reflect on how I can take all that I’ve learned into “real life”. not. ready. for. this. to. end.

5/1/2019, 7:05:18 AM

day 27: pereje to o’cebreiro [28.4 km/17.6 mi] climbed a v steep 2000 ft mountain today!!! the peak led to some BEAUTIFUL views. this mountain was very similar to day 1’s mountain so it was neat to see how much stronger both physically and mentally I have gotten over the past few weeks. highlight was crossing into the final region of Spain today, Galicia, and tasting the regional delicacy of pulpo 🐙 de gallega!! also saw allllll the “wildlife” today🐄🦆🐶🐱

4/29/2019, 10:05:22 PM

day 26: ponferrada to pereje [29.7 km/18.5 mi] LONG, but pretty and sunny day! went back through more vineyards today and almost took a splash in the river to get away from the heat but boy that thing was cold so I chickened out🙃 the paths are getting more and more crowded as Santiago approaches, but I am still managing to make plenty of time for reflection and soak up the last days of this journey

4/29/2019, 7:59:51 AM

day 25: foncebadón to ponferrada [27.3 km/16.9 mi] BEAUTIFUL and really meaningful day on the camino. the cruz de ferro is known as a place along the way where pilgrims lay a stone to symbolize ridding yourself of your burdens as well as a place to leave tokens for people who have passed away. the camino fam started early on to get there at sunrise and it was the perfect day. the majority of the day was spent in the clouds with snowy mountain views that I’ll never forget🥰

4/28/2019, 6:38:38 PM

day 24: astorga to foncebadón [26.4 km/16.4 mi] started the day off by making eggs, bacon, and French toast for the crew!!! today’s scenery was a much needed change from the meseta. was a bit of a difficult day thanks to some more yucky weather and a terrrrrrrrible blister but ya gal survived!!!

4/26/2019, 9:04:20 PM

day 23: san martin del camino to astorga [25.2 km/15.6 mi] in order to avoid the not so pretty highway views in this last part of the meseta, the camino fam opted for a more scenic route that added around ~3 km to the walk today and boy I am THANKFUL for that. the clouds on the cold and windy day were stunning and so nice to look at all day. the highlight of the day is definitely the FREE snack stop around 20 km in. many people tried to donate to the generous man who owned the little shack, but he would only say “es un regalito de la vida para ti [this is a gift for you]”. the generosity displayed on this thing is unexpected and really stinking cool. upon arrival into Astorga [a rlly neat city], we went to see a Gaudí building and started prepping for tomorrow hike into snowy mountain peaks. guess how much I regret sending home my jacket in the first week???

4/26/2019, 5:33:10 AM

day 22: león to san martín del camino [25.9 km/16 mi] the weather was absolutely miserable [rain, sleet, and snow oh my!!!] so minimal photos were taken. the long walk out of the city was walking next to a highway which wasn’t super pleasant, so that coupled with the weather prompted our group to decide to just push through the mileage as quickly as possible. we stopped at a lovely albergue for the evening which included a really nice meal and a box of free clothing left from other pilgrims - swipe to see one of the finds🙃

4/26/2019, 5:12:07 AM

day 21: mansillas to león [18.1 km/11.2 mi] made it to the next big city of the camino!! 💃🏻 today’s walk included eggs and bacon for breakfast🤩, an Airbnb with the camino fam, and a beautiful cathedral in the city center. days 20-30 of the camino are meant for the soul, so definitely looking forward to growth and reflection there for the next ~10 days.

4/24/2019, 12:04:39 AM

day 20: bercianos to mansilla [26.7 km/16.7 mi] a long and very flat day on the meseta. officially closer to the end of the camino than the beginning which is a bit bittersweet😕 excited to have a grasp on what these next two weeks will hopefully look like in terms of topics for reflection. in the mean time, enjoy the picture of the graceful Spanish cows 🐄 and pretty trees 🌲 that broke up the monotony of today’s flat walk.

4/23/2019, 7:17:21 AM

day 19: terradillos to bercianos [23.5 km/14.6 mi] exciting day on the camino as it is Easter AND we reached the halfway point in Sahagún!!! am super grateful to be here during this time of year and to experience and reflect on the meaning of Easter and it’s importance on this walk. I also had peanut butter for the first time in FOREVER today and that on its own is a huge win 😁

4/21/2019, 9:08:28 PM

holy week is something else here in these small Spanish towns!!! processionals such as the one I saw tonight are the norm, even in the tiniest of pueblos. despite all the towns basically shutting down this week (no markets/pharmacies/restaurants), it has been so stinking cool to be in a state of reflection that is reinforced by the local culture during this week.

4/19/2019, 10:24:23 PM

Camino Day 6. My personal record so far - 45 km per day ✅ I started walking early and by myself. For me it is important to start walking alone since the beginning of day: everything is so quite, peaceful, you hear yourself better, sometimes you see sunrise, and you are witnessing how the nature is waking up. Maybe because the whole day I managed to be by myself, I had more energy to walk further alone, although today were a lot of climbing up and going down (hate this part, as I am walking down like a turtle 🐾). When someone joins me, we usually share our stories, our motivation why we are doing Camino, and I could be a bit emotional if the things we discuss really matter to me. The interesting thing I noticed: every time I share my story with different people, every time I learn something new about me or get new insight or perspective from other people. Interesting and incredible experience on this Camino! For me personally it helped to be the whole day alone by myself, this day appeared to be full of valuable insights, observations and witnessing the Beauty of the nature. I think I am getting my answers on this Way. Incredible experience! During this day I didn’t do any single stop for coffee/ ice-cream, even lunch, because I was walking and walking the whole day. So now I am finishing my day in traditional Galician restaurant with nice food and local wine, well deserved! 😋 #caminodesantiago #camino #caninofrances #buencamino #elcamino #createyourowncamino

4/19/2019, 10:20:28 PM

day 17: fromista to carrión de los condes [19.3 km/12 mi] another dreary/muddy/yucky day on the plains. the highlight of the day is definitely today’s hostel - it is run by Augustinian nuns who sing for the pilgrims (but are unfortunately out of town for Holy Week). the hospitaleros stepping in provided a communal dinner and pilgrim meeting where we shared why we are on this walk. somehow I got elected to be the official translator of the event, so I had the privilege to relay peoples stories, hopes, and struggles to a room full of people in English and Spanish. the ceremony ended with the reading of a poem that sums up this experience pretty well. life is good!!! the camino is good!!! no complaints here!!!

4/19/2019, 9:21:19 PM

yesterday’s spotty WiFi didn’t show all of the first post’s pictures and just couldn’t not post the tex mex Doritos picture sooooo... day 16: castrojeriz to frómista [24.9 km/15.5 mi] ‘the rain in Spain falls mainly on the plains’ rang verrrry true today. today was one of the first full days on the ‘meseta’ plains region and it was a dreary day full of clouds ☁️, rain 🌧, and cold weather. the miles flew by thanks to some great conversation and the day ended with the closest thing to tex mex I’ll have for another month [🙃] and some blister surgery 🏥

4/19/2019, 3:11:39 PM

day 15: hornillos to castrojeriz [20.1 km/12.5 mi] today’s shorter day was much needed as my blisters have reappeared 🙃 if anyone wants to send me some new feet pls let me know!!! today was a solid day of thought along the walk - many believe that the Wednesday before Easter is when Judas betrayed Jesus for just a few cents. growing up, it always shocked me that Judas could do that to Jesus. today, I thought about how surprisingly easy it is to betray Jesus whether it’s through thought, deed, or spoken word more often than not. though it is yucky and not fun to think about how often I fall short, it makes the end of this week - Christ’s resurrection - that much sweeter and more incredible.

4/17/2019, 7:05:23 PM

day 14: burgos to hornillos [21 km/13 mi] started off the morning exploring the city of Burgos. they have a BEAUTIFUL cathedral in the city and it was really incredible to walk around each side of the building and look at the detail in the architecture ⛪️ . we got a late start due to the exploring, but it was a gorgeous day and I’m getting some serious tan lines🙃. ended the evening with a GLORIOUS chicken paella 🥘 in a super nice hostel😌 today has been the best day I’ve felt physically at the end of the day thanks to some orthopedic inserts so I’ve got some happppppy feet finally 🦶

4/16/2019, 9:37:22 PM

day 13: san juan to burgos [26.1 km/16.2 mi] made it to the next big city on the camino💃🏻 to celebrate, the camino fam rented an airbnb in the city which included an actual bath tub🧖🏼‍♀️ and a meal that wasn’t bread and cheese 🥙🥗🥬 had some good insights today while walking and am loving that there are physical reminders as to why I’m doing this so often along the way

4/15/2019, 9:37:06 PM

day 12: belorado to san juan de ortega [24.2 km/15 mi] the start of Holy Week on this trail has been really neat. attended my first pilgrim’s mass for palm sunday [domingo de ramos] 🌿 which set a really important tone for the rest of this week. the sun ☀️ is starting to come out and I’m extra thankful for the conversations and friendships being made on this journey thus far.

4/15/2019, 9:21:20 PM

day 11: santo domingo to belorado [22.4 km/13.9 mi] it’s said that the first ten days of walking on the camino are for the body, the next ten days for the mind, and the following ten days for the soul. today marked the tenth day of walking and it’s neat to see how I’ve improved in strength and stamina. my feet are still getting used to the mileage, yet continue to carry me through this. today was a good day. saw alllll the pups🐶, crossed into the next region of Spain [Castilla y Leon], and got to soak my feet in an actual pool!!! still a bit in awe that I’m out here doing this, but wouldn’t change it for the world.

4/13/2019, 10:11:41 PM

day 10: nájera to santo domingo de la calzada [21.3 km/13.2 mi] morale was MUCH higher on today’s shorter day😁 highlights include meeting another Texan ( #gigem)🤠, eating a hamburger 🍔, the pretty views/great weather, and fam dinner with the new squad👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

day 9: logroño to nájera [28.9 km/18 mi] today was HARD. the long distance + blisters + tired feet make for a mentally, physically, and emotionally exhausting day. I srsly only made it through the day thanks to Jesus and Amy Poehler’s audiobook “Yes Please”. despite the hard day, came away with some good takeaways about my purpose on this camino and a solid group of people that I spent the afternoon/evening with. the Lord was with me step by step today and I’m so grateful for that peace and presence in the midst of physical pain. tonight, I’m sharing a room with 70 other pilgrims🥴 can’t wait for all the snoring!!!

day 8: took a much needed rest day in logroño! explored the city a bit and ended the evening watching the barça / man u game with my favorite Irish guys, Tommy & Enda. felt great to give my legs a break, not sleep in a bunk bed, and simply pause and reflect on the last week (which honestly feels like has lasted for years). yes I ate Burger King and enjoyed every second of it don’t roast me

day 7: los arcos to logroño [27.8 km/17.3 mi] today marks one week AND 100+ miles on the camino!!! it was a LONG day, but officially have walked into the next region of Spain, La Rioja😁 booked a private room bc #treatyoself 💆🏽‍♀️ & I‘m ecstatic to not sleep in a bunk bed tonight!! today’s walk/convos made me grateful for all of the good things I have back home [fam, friends, job, etc.] and I’m hopeful that this experience will help me become a better steward of those blessings in the future

day 6: estella to los arcos [21.5 km/13.4 mi] not much to WINE about on this Monday 🍷 the day started with a drink from the public wine fountain at Irache which honestly was not the worst morning I’ve ever had😁 walked through lots of wine country and rain today up until Eduardo’s pop-up store in the middle of nowhere provided some much needed sustenance 😋 I’m not really sure how to describe the first week yet, but this is one of the strangest, hardest, yet most interesting and rewarding thing in the world.

day 5: puente la reina to estella [21.9 km] another gorgeous day on the camino!! today was full of happy surprises like a rest area with books, benches, and free first aid supplies 🏥 began to feel twinges of homesickness, but dinner with fellow pilgrims from Ireland, Canada, and Denmark was just what I needed. above all I am confident that the Lord has me here to challenge and stretch me in many ways. very thankful that he has made that evident just in these first five days.

day 4: Pamplona to Puente la Reina [23.8 km/14.8 mi] beautiful day filled with the dreamiest of views🤩 today was filled with sunshine, windmills (major don quixote vibes!!!), and pretty 🌸. today’s companions included people from Italy, Russia, Ireland, Canada, Germany, Australia, and England 🌎🤗

day 3: zubiri to pamplona [20.9 km] made it to the first big city of the camino!!! 💃🏻 my sore legs and shoulders make me want to get trampled by a bull but el corrido de toros doesn’t happen here until July🙄 the Lord was rlly answering prayers for good conversation today as I have gotten to know people from Spain, Denmark, Belgium, Mexico, Taiwan, Ireland, and South Korea all in the last 24 hours. other than that, have enjoyed exploring Pamplona through food and drink (kalimotxas are my new fav). random Pamplona fun fact: Ernest Hemingway spent a lot of time here and his face is prettttty much everywhere🤓

day 2: roncesvalles to ziburi [21.9 km] MUCH less strenuous day today despite a large section of steep decline but most of the trail felt a little bit like walking through Narnia🥰 790 km to go!!!

4/4/2019, 4:45:05 PM

day 1: St Jean Pied de Port to Roncesvalles [23.6 km/14.7 mi; 28.5 km when adjusted for 1000 m gain in elevation] holyyyyy wow what a day!!! day 1 is the most difficult of the trail and it kicked my booty with the constant elevation increase🙃 walked the majority of the way with a Dutch woman named Irrinke and an Australian woman named Sharon. crossed into Spain and am #blessed to have had a warm shower in the hostel housed in an ancient monastery ⛪️
