While a lot of the attention has focused on the connection to LA session musicians and AOR, a more subtle but just as influential sound to the construction of Japanese pop is Chicago Soul. As I continue to research and find music that speaks to me, I keep putting pieces of the puzzle together - 5 years ago I started asking myself why the music of Chicago spoke to me so much and I examined this through its influences of gospel & blues, an exultation and lamentation. Texas-bred singer Ginji James released just one album (pictured) and one single in 1971 and '72 respectively, for Chicago's great Brunswick Records. Ginji’s got a style that’s both sweet and deep — which makes her a perfect fit for the sweeping arrangements of the record - which was made on South Michigan Street in Chicago — very much in the best Brunswick Chi-soul style of the time, and carried off perfectly by a team of studio talents that includes Carl Davis, Eugene Record, Willie Henderson, and Tom Tom!
