Yesterday was a great day, with staff, interns and volunteers coming from five organisations to grow Sweet Potatoes, Cassava and Yams for this yearās growing season. Thanks to Thuch and the team from United African Farm, Barbara from FareShare, Jesse from the Collingwood Childrenās Farm, Claire and crew from Torello Farm and Katrina from FarmRaiser. Special guest star was my colleague and urban ag collaborator from the lesser known Campus of Unimelb at Parkville, Professor Adrian Hearn from Spanish and Latin American Studies. Itās been eight years since we started growing Sweet Potatoes for FareShareās farms at Victoria Park, Heatherton and Moorabbin and weāre sufficiently (and finally) organised enough this year to grow slips and cuttings for an increased number of gardens and landscapes. The hidden gem of Kingswoodā¦ Grimsbury Farm is our new favourite city farm. Itās much bigger than the others and feels like youāre at proper farm in the sticks - not just minutes away from a busy High Street. Thereās a fab enclosed play area which kept my two busy for a good hour and saw Alfie nail the monkey bars. š Visit now to see some shiny new piglets - super cute! š· Thereās a great cafe run by @brandontrust as well as a snack shack in the the play area plus plenty of picnic spots. Itās free entry (donations welcomed) and a bucket of animal feed is just Ā£1. All in all a fab cheap day out. There were so many great circles and conversations where ideas, experience, learnings and knowledge were shared @landskillsfair at the weekend -Ā in a way that's just not possible online! Ā Ā This one gathered the Peri-Urban Practitioners Forum, our main contribution to the Fringe Farming project, a collaboration with partners across the UK to understand barriers, identify land opportunities and local actions, and develop national policy to enable agroecological farming at the edge of cities as part of a green economic recovery. Ā It was a really great discussion about the challenges and opportunities with accessing unused parcels of land, raising finance and returns and working with councils and local authorities - a vital knowledge exchange to help build the network of urban farms and community gardens around our cities and towns!
