The Guardian reports: "Billion-dollar financing is driving unsustainable increases in global meat and dairy production, a report has found. [...] Martin Bowman, policy and campaigns manager for Feedback, the UK-based campaign group that produced the report, said: 'We’re calling for financial institutions to defund industrial livestock companies as soon as possible.' The sprawling risks of industrial animal agriculture catalogued in the report include its contributions to the climate crisis, deforestation, pollution, animal abuse, biodiversity loss, worker exploitation, human sickness and antibiotic resistance." "'The banks offering the most support to the world’s top 55 industrial livestock companies were Bank of America, which provided almost $29bn, Barclays with just over $28bn and JPMorgan Chase with almost $27bn, the report found. Barclays was the biggest lender to the Brazilian meat firm JBS, 'the world’s highest-emitting livestock company', it said. Big dairy financiers named in the report include Wells Fargo, which was the top creditor to Dairy Farmers of America, and ANZ bank, the biggest creditor to New Zealand’s Fonterra. In 2021, Dairy Farmers of America emitted more greenhouse gases than Denmark, and Fonterra was responsible for about 45% of New Zealand’s total emissions that year, it said." Hops, a crucial ingredient in beer production, are at risk due to the climate crisis. Scientists have found that hops in major beer-producing European countries like Germany, Czech Republic, and Slovenia have been ripening earlier and producing lower yields since 1994. Wild populations of a number of animals have plummeted nearly 70 per cent in the past 50 years, according to a new study highlighting "devastating" losses by the World Wildlife Fund. The WWF Living Planet Index is showing accelerating falls across the globe from 32,000 populations of more than 5,000 species of mammals, birds, amphibians, reptiles and fish. It found the main drivers of wildlife loss were habitat degradation due to development as well as farming, exploitation, the introduction of invasive species, pollution, climate change and disease. Globally, the report found that monitored animal populations had fallen 69 per cent between 1970 and 2018. In Australia, the report states, heatwaves and droughts are driving mass mortality events for trees, birds, bats, and fish. "A single hot day in 2014 killed more than 45,000 flying fox bats in Australia," the report said. Despite the worrying content, there were some glimmers of hope. The report found, for example, vertebrate biodiversity in Indigenous territories, including Australia, was equal to, or surpassed, that found within formally protected areas. Accessing our experience of inter-being is a process of taking what we know as scientifically and observably true about our interconnectedness with the biosphere, with Gaia, and turning it into a felt knowing. Moving from the compelling and inspiring work of so many like-minds; Merlin Sheldrake in Entangled Life, Arne Naess and the Deep Ecology Movement, Joanna Macey - Systems Theory, Robin Wall Kimmerer and many others, into the practice of consciously inhabiting our interconnectivity or inter-being. This is a precursor to fully facing the realties of our time, the climate and ecological crises, the geopolitical dynamics and desperate clinging to life of neoliberalism. These situations; billions spent on HS2 and so many other votives to the god of economic growth, while the earth's systems stumble and fall into fires, droughts, floods, are not comprehensible through our rational mind alone. Some would argue it is our linear and reductionist western thought process that has created some of the raging paradoxes of our time. It’s NOT all about protesting. I got SUCH a buzz at the Rotterdam Climate March today. Has to be the best atmosphere (i.e. party) I’ve experienced at a protest in a long time. Hats off especially to the XR sound system blasting out 80s synth pop... BUT. Being part of the climate movement, is NOT just about going to protests. It’s easy to get overwhelmed or alienated by the scale of the problem(s). And decide to do nothing. As I do on a daily basis. Enter… the Climate Action Venn Diagram! The living legend that is @ayanaeliza came up with this and I think it’s wicked. When we talk about reducing emissions we often focus on fossil fuels, and rightfully so, but what about forests? The latest IPCC report addresses the question of forests and proposes some shady solutions, the most concerning being bioenergy with carbon capture and storage. Basically this means: They destroy a forest and it’s biodiversity; They plant a monoculture plantation; They cut down the plantation; The burn the wood for energy; They capture the carbon and store it underground and hope it stays there forever; They plant another plantation; Repeat.. Turns out that this cycle is In fact worse in terms of emissions than burning coal, but they live in a fantasy that one day it won’t be and so it keeps making the list of all called ‘solutions’. Plus, we don’t really have the land available on planet Earth for all the plantations they would need for this one.. Maybe one day soon, we will focus on the things in front of us for climate action in the land sector and prioritize: 1. Protecting natural forests and ecosystems 2. Restore degraded ecosystems 4. Recently my community, district and greater and outer region was severely flood affected. The deluge was prolific, four times in some cases more than our last floods in 2017. 15,000 homes to the north lost and perhaps equal amounts here and again l imagine further south. There was walking shock and trauma everywhere but the people rallied with tremendous skill and vigour. It was quite alarming in all directions. Our temperatures have been so consistently above normal that many of my plants think it’s spring. Friends tell me their lilacs are starting to bloom (not very well because the days are so short, but still), and their blueberries are also preparing to fruit. Here my Daphnia is about to flower, and so are my honeyworts. Rising oceans are one thing to consider, of course, but there is so much more. Plants become confused and flower when there are no bees. And what about the bees? Will they come out at the wrong time? Will they survive increased summer heat? Just the other day it was 64 F in Plains, Montana, and much of the country is seeing temperatures 10-15 degrees F above normal. If we have that issue in the summer, we’ll be in deep trouble. We haven’t had any frost yet this fall/winter, but in late May we had a deep freeze. I had to scrape ice off my car in late May! How do the plants and animals deal with this chaos? How do we adapt? It’s time to seriously consider what we plant. Choose plants that are hardy in both hot weather and cold, and plant as many perennials as you can!
