The Atlantic Forest, a Brazilian biome that has been exploited for nearly 5 centuries, has been reduced to about a quarter of its original area. Brazil has committed to restoring tens of millions of hectares of forest by 2030. Recently, smaller-scale civil environmental groups have started launching initiatives to track the progress Brazil has made in its commitment to restoration. Programs including The Brazilian Coalition on Forests, Climate and Agricultureā€™s Restoration and Reforestation Observatory, and the Pact for Restoration of the Atlantic Forest have discovered that restoration-related information is decentralized or not produced at all. These programs provide a resolution to the lack of governance from public authorities and will hold authorities accountable. This is an advancement in effectively restoring the #AtlanticForest, leaving many hopeful in reaching the end goal. In the link in bio, @Mongabay details how these initiatives are tracking the progress of the restoration efforts. --------- We repost this image/video and text in its original format as we wish to promote: @leonardodicaprio and we trust that this account hasnā€™t made any copyright infringements by posting the image/video.

It is the beginning of Earth Month & a provincial election is coming. So it is a good time to encourage everyone to consider provincial policies (& voting) through a climate & intersectional lens because the economy cannot & should not continue to be the sole focus or measure of success. Ford has been in election mode for months now, increasingly piling on the PDA (political displays of affection) to get your vote. But when Ford touts savings, all I see is a loss in revenue. For example, the elimination of license plate sticker fees is the new ā€˜buck-a-beerā€™. How is the government making up for this new $1 billion revenue gap (that barely provides a discernible savings in everyday budgets at $280 a YEAR) while making billions in cuts to the environment, education, healthcare & social supports because ā€˜fundingā€™ is slim & provincial budgets are ā€˜stretched.ā€™ I wonder why. Where is the impetus to address structural disparities that force people into survival mode & even exacerbate it? Ford just inked a deal with the federal government for $10-a-day Child Care & while it is welcome news, all I see is a strategic hold-out that left Ontario families waiting an additional 9 months for the same plan. With an election in two months, the ink will still be drying & I think that is precisely the point. &, when Ford touts housing, I am keenly aware that the housing crisis is being leveraged to justify further urban sprawl which fits neatly into the proposed highway plans & further developing land along those routes. Where does affordability fit into all of this? Who is really going to benefit from the selling off of precious & essential farmland, forests & wetlands? All of this makes me wonder how the current provincial government is actually taking care of Ontarians if they see it fit to cut revenue streams & then lament thereā€™s no money for anything or deliver deals for the sake of optics & performative leadership (keeping Ontarians waiting for much needed support) or continuing to ignore simultaneous crises like the climate breakdown, an ongoing pandemic & a worsening care economy deficit. The Ford government is planning for a future they will not be living in.

Posted @withregram ā€¢ @climateresilienceproject CLIMATE ACTION AS SOLIDARITY (tw: structural racism) The debate about whether/how much an individualā€™s actions can affect climate outcomes is a tired one (see the ā€œbeyond the individual vs. systems change binaryā€ post from July 16 for more thoughts on this), but I really appreciated Jeremy Williamsā€™ reframe (in his book CLIMATE CHANGE IS RACIST) to look at personal climate action as a critical opportunity, particularly for White folks and folks with other forms of privilege, to act in solidarity with the people and areas most impacted by environmental injustices, the climate crisis, and other compounding + interrelated forms of oppression (many of whom have sacrificed involuntarily). I needed this reminder. While individual lifestyle/consumption should never be the endgame of climate activism or the sole focus of climate action, it should not be overlooked as a crucial way for people (particularly the folks who consume the most resources and produce the most greenhouse gas emissions, pollution, and trash) to repair relationships, align words and intentions with actions, subvert power, and stand alongside those most affected by systems of oppression (of which climate change is a manifestation). Climate action as racial solidarity. Climate action as disability solidarity. Climate action as cross-generational solidarity. Climate action as queer, trans, and two spirit solidarity. Climate action as more-than-human kin solidarity. Climate action as global solidarity. Climate action as class solidarity. . . . #climate #climatechange #climateaction #climatestrike #climatecrisis #climateemergency #climatejustice #bankingonclimatechange #climateactionnow #solidarity #systemchange #stopfossilfuels #uprootthesystem #facetheclimateemergency #changeiscoming #actnow #dosomething #FridaysforFuture #ClimateStrikeToronto #ClimateStrikeCanada #decolonize #systemicoppression #cndpoli #environment #collectiveaction #takeaction #socialjustice #landback #strongertogether #community

ā€œIā€™m here today because I think things like this work. Recently, around the world, great change has been made through actions like this. Iā€™m able to feel like I have a chance to make a difference. I think a major problem that our generation as a whole and me in particular struggle with is being able to find hope in an issue like this, something that feels so large and deep. But I think something like this is one of the ways we can make a change, and a way that I can contribute to as a person. I think there are so many purposes of this and how this can help. I think the awareness we are raising is important, and so is being able to make specific demands to our government. Being able to demand for indigenous rights. Being able to demand actions towards a green new deal. I think thatā€™s absolutely the most important.ā€ ā€¢ @_lexiberger is a student and one of the incredible change makers who came out to the global climate strike in Toronto this past week! šŸŒ± #climatechangetoronto #greenpeacetoronto #climateaction #globalstrike #climatestriketoronto #makingchange #fridaysforfuture #extinctionrebellion #toronto #cityhall

ā€œThe symbol Iā€™m holding is a Red Winged Blackbird, and itā€™s the symbol I drew to represent the nation of love. These little birds are fierce water and land protectors, and protectors of their family. Since we are all related and we all need the water and land together, its more less a symbol of love and a symbol of protecting the earth and the environment, that all life depends on. It relates very much to climate change because here we are with the youth leading it, but we all need to support it. Its for the future babies. Iā€™m here travelling around trying to do love activism and sometimes that just means being on the streets and being with people and finding community amongst ourselves.ā€ ā€¢ SWIPE to see this unique symbol! "My previous relationship was a battle that we had with a pipeline that travels through our traditional territory. Our nation took Canada to court, all the way to the Supreme Court of Canada to let them know that we were not consulted properly when they wanted to run a pipeline through our territory. And we had a lot of supporters and allies come on board. @ryerson_u was right on board with us in supporting us with funds to go to court. Ultimately, we didnā€™t win the case but we definitely are still fighting to keep our water clean, air clean, and the Anishinaabe people in this region are all banding together to make our mother earth as healthy as possible. That is what I do now. I speak to different groups, I work at the law society, at McMaster, with the OPP, and Iā€™m trying to make people realize that our mother earth is the most important thing we have. This week has been a rough one for me, and my mood has gone pretty far south. I probably should be doing homework, but I just can't, so instead I've been going through photos I've taken earlier this year. This one touched my heart. It was photographed during the Sept 27 Climate Strike in Toronto, and the crowds were pretty large and packed. Out of the blue I managed to capture this sweet moment between two siblings, where big brother was leading his little brother through the crowd. I absolutely love photos like these! . . Yesterday I joined my friends from Charter City Toronto and city councillors Josh Matlow and Kristyn wong-tam to support the launch the CCTO proposal at city hall! (Clip of my brief speech below). This is by no means a final document, however we do hope it sparks a long overdue discussion about governance, resources and responsibilities of the province and the city. We are in the midst of a climate emergency, housing crisis and increasing income inequality, being the closest decision making body to the people it only makes sense that we make sure our city, its residence and representatives are finally given the decision making autonomy and financial tools necessary to take these issues out of the realm of partisan politics and generate locally relevant solutions that also give agency to the many diverse voices and communities that make this city great!
