Returning to our weekly maker focus, if you’ve been in the cloth world a while there’s no doubt you would’ve heard of RAWr nappies. Erin specialised in night nappies that have long been our favourites before sadly closing down. Well known mostly for the OSFM fitted Soakmaster and the sized AIO Stuff n Snaps. She also introduced a toddler pull up and newborn mini 360 to the range as well as a range of thirsty hemp and bamboo prefolds. The business was based in Tasmania and has been stocked in our store since I first took over the business in 2017. All nappies were ethically made overseas in a small family owned factory that Erin had worked closely with. Erin was always happy to help out whenever needed. Yes, using cloth nappies can still very much be done inexpensively. Want to know how? Here are some ideas for how to keep costs down: 💰 Using nappies for more than one baby (whether that be your own or sharing amongst friends & family) brings down the cost per wear of cloth nappies. 💰 By buying nappies secondhand, you can often bag a bargain. The secondhand market isn't great at the moment, which means you're more likely to be able to pick up some bargains as a buyer. 💰 Using a system like terries/flats and wraps is *the* most cost effective way of using cloth mappies - they are cheaper to buy and can be cheaper to wash/dry - they also dry quicker meaning you don't need any many. 💰 Hiring a kit helps you find what works best for you, so no trial and error - you get to try before you buy. 💰 You can sell nappies after you have finished using them. Yes, the secondhand market isn't great for sellers at the moment but this may improve and, in any event, you are likely to still be able to get something back which is more than you are likely to get for your disposables! 💰 Cloth Nappy retailers aren't known for having loads of big sales but they do during times like @reusablenappyweekofficial. If you've got some items on your shopping list, now is the time to have a look in the sales for them. 💰 Don't get drawn into buying the lovely prints 🙈 There's nothing wrong with buying a lot of different nappies if that's what you want to do but there's no denying that a good way to keep costs down is to not buy too many! I have it in a play mat and other bits too! 🤩🦧 Close Pop-in nappies are a great starter nappy. It comes with 2 inserts and you can boost with more if you need to. The double leg gusset also helps ensure a better fit and prevents leaks. ✨ This nappy is of a velcro fastening which is handy as it is quick and easy. Just be sure to fasten it onto the laundry tab before putting it to wash to prevent the velcro from catching on to other things. ✨ I think the velcro fastening nappies show wear quicker than the popper ones. You can see it in my last photo of the unwashed nappy compared with nappies that have been used in rotation for 1.5years. Using preflats on older children, our onesize preflats are designed to last till potty training but this definitely has a few factors to it, the build and when they potty train. At 3.5yrs our onesize are still fitting my daughter who is only in nappies at night. while others moved on to the toddler size preflats before they turned 3. It also depends on if you boost inside or outside or at all. Once your child is down to just doing 1-2 wees at night, reduce it down to just a preflat. So much slimmer but will still hold. As for wiggle monsters, we just managed. The crocodile rolls, bridges and bum wiggles are just part and parcel of a toddler no matter what nappy you use. I can put a preflat on in almost the same time as a pocket nappy, the split seconds has never been enough to put me off 🤣. Especially when for us and many preflats last longer than pockets. With no built-in stay dry you can remove it for helping to feel wetness when they are showing signs of potty training. Does using cloth nappies out and about put you off trying them? Maybe you're interested in cloth nappies but the idea of having to use them on the go means that you're unsure about giving them a go full stop? It's understandable - a lot of changing rooms are set up with a bin for disposables but, for example, how do you know there will be a toilet to flusha away poo? Or are you worried about the extra bulk of reusables? Or maybe you don't want to carry wet nappies around with you? The first thing to say is - you don't have to use cloth nappies on the go if you don't want to! You can use reusables at home and then disposables when you're out, if that's what you would prefer to do. As I've said before, using cloth nappies isn't all or nothing. But I suspect you will find that using cloth nappies on the go really isn't too different to using them at home! When you're changing baby, pop the used nappy into a wet bag which goes into your changing bag, and wash it with your other nappies when you get home! - if you're worried about a soaking wet nappy leaking, you can either double-up the wet bags, or use a plastic bag as well. You can also get wet bags that are thicker or are 'double PUL'. - if you're worried about poo - ideally you would flush it down the loo if you're at that stage but, if not, just wrapnit up and deal with when you get home. Again, you can double-up with wet bags, and you can wrap the nappy up tightly to secure anything that's in there! - Alternatively, use disposable liners and throw them into the nappy bins (in a disposable nappy bag) What about the bulk? Depending on baby's age, I'd recommend taking 1 or 2 more nappies than you think you will need, just in case. There are a number of slimmer options on the market but there is more room in changing bags than you might think! When baby is past the newborn stage, you could probably manage with 5-6 nappies for a full day out. But it's about thinking what you're taking out generally, not just the nappies. Throughout this Reusable Nappy Week, we will daily share a post as a mini course to the world of cloth diapers. Today part 6. . How do you wash a cloth diaper? . It is best to wash cloth diapers every 2 to 3 days. Until then, you collect the diapers in a diaper bucket with mesh bag (water-permeable) or in a pail liner (largely waterproof). When it is time to wash, place the mesh bag or pail liner in the washing machine. You can simply place a mesh bag open in the washing machine; when using a pail liner, it is best to push the diapers out a little. . Run the washing machine on a short cold program. For example, the rinse and spin program. Anything that washes with cold water and takes 15 to 30 minutes is good. Add detergent for lightly soiled laundry with this prewash. Look carefully at the packaging of your detergent and take into account your water hardness and size of your washing drum. Most detergents from the supermarket are suitable, but eco detergents are often less powerful. . After the cold prewash, start the main wash at 60 degrees, dosing for heavily soiled laundry. Do not use the Eco mode, it often uses too little water. After washing, it is best to hang the diapers to dry double over two lines. . Most absorbent parts can also be tumble dried at a low temperature. However, this increases maintenance costs and might accelerate the risk of wear and tear. It also has a negative environmental impact. All in all, if you can do without a dryer, it has many advantages. So, part of the homework from my therapist is noticing right. Well - it's noticing 'what comes up', specifically, but also noticing joy - and I had two interactions at Pak n Save on Friday, joyful, human interactions, and it reminded me how much I feed off the energy of my people and how good it feels. (Not people in general mind, just people I like 🤣). And so I kinda put out to the universe that I wanted my people and hugs and baby snugs, and the universe delivered and on Thursday night the Ds and I stay with Nana in Whangarei, Friday we stay with Granny and Pā in Auckland, and Saturday I get to spend a whole day at Waananga Hapuu ki Waahi Paa in Huntly. Have you heard of Hapu Wānanga? Think antenatal classes that are as Māori as possible within the construct of a colonial system. They're incredible. I met the powerhouse wāhine who birthed this kaupapa through oirmenstrual cup mahi back in Hamilton, and have been invited to hapu waananga in the past to talk reusable menstrual and nappy options. Anyway. Like I said - I put it out to the inverse that I wanted to hug people and sniff babies, the invite came to attend next weekend, and I said 'heck yes!' and then panicked at the rashness of my decision making 🤣🤣🙈 (Swipe for some snaps from my Close Friends stories #PatreonPerk). I spent the day getting ready, I've got printed wash guides, and I'm just so humbled to be welcomed back so enthusiastically. Roadtrip on!
