As we come to the end of #ReuseableNappyWeek, I wanted to highlight one last motivation for those of you on the fence about cloth nappies. And it's completely selfish but totally justified! It's the joy-factor 😊 Let it be said that using cloth nappies brings me joy! Yes, some of that might be tied with all of the other motivations this week, because who wouldn't want to smile when they think about saving the planet and money at the same time, or when they're admiring a cute little cloth bum waddling past them. But there is something about these colourful, snuggly little nappies that just puts a smile on my face. It was a complete surprise when I started looking into using cloth nappies that there was such a community hiding here in plain sight! The further I got into my cloth nappy journey, the more supported I felt and not just because I'd started using nappies, but because everyone was so friendly and had something kind and encouraging to say about every aspect of parenting. It's a real credit to this network of cloth bum parents that many people hang about for years, even after their children are no longer in nappies. Thanks to Covid and lockdowns, it forced us to be more open-minded about where our "village" comes from. For me (4 years into my cloth journey and I've only made an IRL cloth mum friend this past year) this community has been a source of encouragement when I've felt like I'm doing everything wrong, when I couldn't get on top of the laundry or when I just needed a little pick-me-up. I've made (hopefully) lifelong friends, and these years will be forever ingrained in my memory for all the wonderful, colourful people I've had the pleasure to "meet". They will sell your nappies on your behalf when there’s availability or you can sell yourself through their marketplace. 🫳 sell through Facebook pages or Marketplace, often selling locally so buyers can avoid postage costs. 🫳 contact a local nappy library and ask whether they are accepting donations. If they can’t use them they will often sell them on your behalf to raise funds for the library. 🫳 research local charities as some food banks or refuges will take reusable nappies. 🫳 donate to the @therainbowlegacy2022 , A Gambian charity providing nappies to the maternity hospital and others who need them. SEVEN MONTHS IN THIRSTIES: Duo Wraps Size 1 Update @thirstiesinc Duo Wraps are said to fit at 6 - 18 lbs. Emma has been wearing them since she was 1 week old when we were able to get a relatively secure fit around her tiny legs. Here's how they're working for us 7 months later... 📏 THE FIT Emma (~17 lbs) is on the largest rise setting and the third to last waist snaps with a little room left to grow. These fit Eren until about a year old so I'm curious to see how long they'll last Emma. Size wise, they pair perfectly with Cloth-eez novice prefolds, but size small prefolds are a little big for them. They fit more trimly than OS diaper covers so they're my favorite for on the go. They do sit a little low on the waist so I wouldn't trust them for overnight over a fitted, but that hasn't caused an issue for daytime diapering. We're talking all about #onechangebigdifference this Reusable Nappy Week and what's better motivation than helping your child navigate potty training? Although there are no definitive statistics that show how much quicker children potty train in cloth vs. disposable, there has been a general trend for children being in nappies longer since the introduction and gain in popularity of the disposable. The main point being: disposable nappies wick the moisture away from the skin so that babies feel dry. Now what relevance does that have to modern cloth nappies? Whilst it's true that traditional nappies (terries and muslins) don't have a stay dry feel once used, many modern cloth nappies do. And it's a big selling point! Of course cloth users want their babies to feel comfortable too! The joy of modern cloth is that it can be adapted to help the wearer feel wet. This means your child will associate peeing with feeling wet and begin to recognise what is occurring. So although there's no facts and figures, as all children become dry at their own pace, it is very likely that cloth nappies will be able to help them on their journey to dryness. WHY CLOTH NAPPIES? Being out and about with the nappy library this week, I've had a few people ask me about how I got into running the library, and cloth nappies generally. My reason for using cloth nappies was environmental, but even with that reason in mind, I had no idea just how far it would take me down the sustainability route. I especially couldn't bear the idea of all those nappies that would be thrown in the bin. I like to think of myself as always having been a little bit eco conscious, but getting into cloth nappies led to me finding out about other items such as reusable period products, and opened my eyes to things like issues with fast fashion. But that's one of the benefits of using cloth nappies - for some people, it's a gateway into a whole new way of living! I love that it's a bit of continuity between the boys too - it's a bit like having your youngest wear a favourite outfit from when your eldest was younger. MAKING LAUNDRY NOT LANDFILL?? Most of us will have seen the statistics along the lines of "using reusable nappies is better because disposables last 500 years in landfill" and whilst I'm not disputing that fact, one thing we need to bear in mind is that a large chunk of our waste in the UK is incinerated. The figures for household waste in England in 2021/2022 said that 47% of local authority and household waste is sent to incineration* and the recent Big Plastic Count 2024 by @greenpeaceuk found that 58% of our plastic waste is incinerated. I haven't been able to find whether that would have included disposable nappies but based on the government's local authority figures, around half of our waste is incinerated so perhaps we need to start turning our attention to this as well, rather than just thinking about landfill? I've even had this conversation with someone before, who suggested that disposables aren't as bad when you consider that the waste is incinerated rather than sent to landfill, and the incineration process generates energy. However: 🌫 incinerators release toxic gases into the air (it can produce more carbon dioxide per tonne than burning coal) [source: Greenpeace] 🌍 new plastic still needs to be produced for nappies, meaning more drilling for oil and more deforestation 🏘 incinerators are more likely to be built in deprived areas, where residents are disproportionately people of colour [source: Greenpeace] 🗑not all incinerated waste is used for energy recovery 🔥 even taking into account energy recovery from incineration, the global warming potention of disposable nappies is still higher than with reusables ** So yes, disposables may be incinerated rather than go to landfill, and some energy may be generated this way, but it is still problematic, and reusable still present a better option! Microplastics are being found everywhere- in placentas and in breast and dairy milk. Also our babies are 10 times more likely to ingest/inhale them compared to adults, due to crawling and mouthing objects. Disposable nappies are made from plastic that will take 500 years to breakdown, all the while releasing microplastics into the environment. ESEMBLY UPDATE: How our size 1 inners and outers are fitting 6 month old Emma For diapers that have fit Emma well since 2 weeks old, these Esembly outers and inners have sure lasted us a while! Emma was around 16 lbs when she was last weighed a few weeks ago, so this tracks with the brand's official weight range of 7-17 lbs. Still, the fact that she can still fit into these at 6 months shows me these fitteds and covers were indeed a good investment for our newborn stash this time around - especially with how reliable and convenient they've been! 📏 THE FIT She's on the 2nd to last waist settings (see pictures 2 and 3). There's still a little room left but not much, and I expect she'll outgrow the height of the diaper before the width, especially since there are no rise settings on either inner or outer. Once she's down to the last waist snap I'll see if it's still possible to get a secure leak-free fit. But as of this post the fitted and cover are still doing their job well. We've had a few instances of moisture wicking from the top but no actual leaks. 💧 ABSORBENCY Still as bullet proof as ever for daytime and naptime! (Haven't tried overnight.) She has yet to out-pee the inner, so I expect that she will outgrow the fit long before the absorbency.
