Yes, using cloth nappies can still very much be done inexpensively. Want to know how? Here are some ideas for how to keep costs down: 💰 Using nappies for more than one baby (whether that be your own or sharing amongst friends & family) brings down the cost per wear of cloth nappies. 💰 By buying nappies secondhand, you can often bag a bargain. The secondhand market isn't great at the moment, which means you're more likely to be able to pick up some bargains as a buyer. 💰 Using a system like terries/flats and wraps is *the* most cost effective way of using cloth mappies - they are cheaper to buy and can be cheaper to wash/dry - they also dry quicker meaning you don't need any many. 💰 Hiring a kit helps you find what works best for you, so no trial and error - you get to try before you buy. 💰 You can sell nappies after you have finished using them. Yes, the secondhand market isn't great for sellers at the moment but this may improve and, in any event, you are likely to still be able to get something back which is more than you are likely to get for your disposables! 💰 Cloth Nappy retailers aren't known for having loads of big sales but they do during times like @reusablenappyweekofficial. If you've got some items on your shopping list, now is the time to have a look in the sales for them. 💰 Don't get drawn into buying the lovely prints 🙈 There's nothing wrong with buying a lot of different nappies if that's what you want to do but there's no denying that a good way to keep costs down is to not buy too many! Adding another one - 💰 Spread the cost! You can either buy gradually when you're pregnant (or ask for them as new baby gifts?) or even buy them gradually when baby arrives. Yes, some of that might be tied with all of the other motivations this week, because who wouldn't want to smile when they think about saving the planet and money at the same time, or when they're admiring a cute little cloth bum waddling past them. But there is something about these colourful, snuggly little nappies that just puts a smile on my face. Does using cloth nappies out and about put you off trying them? Maybe you're interested in cloth nappies but the idea of having to use them on the go means that you're unsure about giving them a go full stop? It's understandable - a lot of changing rooms are set up with a bin for disposables but, for example, how do you know there will be a toilet to flusha away poo? Or are you worried about the extra bulk of reusables? Or maybe you don't want to carry wet nappies around with you? The first thing to say is - you don't have to use cloth nappies on the go if you don't want to! You can use reusables at home and then disposables when you're out, if that's what you would prefer to do. As I've said before, using cloth nappies isn't all or nothing. But I suspect you will find that using cloth nappies on the go really isn't too different to using them at home! When you're changing baby, pop the used nappy into a wet bag which goes into your changing bag, and wash it with your other nappies when you get home! - if you're worried about a soaking wet nappy leaking, you can either double-up the wet bags, or use a plastic bag as well. You can also get wet bags that are thicker or are 'double PUL'. - if you're worried about poo - ideally you would flush it down the loo if you're at that stage but, if not, just wrapnit up and deal with when you get home. Again, you can double-up with wet bags, and you can wrap the nappy up tightly to secure anything that's in there! - Alternatively, use disposable liners and throw them into the nappy bins (in a disposable nappy bag) What about the bulk? Depending on baby's age, I'd recommend taking 1 or 2 more nappies than you think you will need, just in case. There are a number of slimmer options on the market but there is more room in changing bags than you might think! When baby is past the newborn stage, you could probably manage with 5-6 nappies for a full day out. But it's about thinking what you're taking out generally, not just the nappies. It was a complete surprise when I started looking into using cloth nappies that there was such a community hiding here in plain sight! The further I got into my cloth nappy journey, the more supported I felt and not just because I'd started using nappies, but because everyone was so friendly and had something kind and encouraging to say about every aspect of parenting. It's a real credit to this network of cloth bum parents that many people hang about for years, even after their children are no longer in nappies. Thanks to Covid and lockdowns, it forced us to be more open-minded about where our "village" comes from. For me (4 years into my cloth journey and I've only made an IRL cloth mum friend this past year) this community has been a source of encouragement when I've felt like I'm doing everything wrong, when I couldn't get on top of the laundry or when I just needed a little pick-me-up. I've made (hopefully) lifelong friends, and these years will be forever ingrained in my memory for all the wonderful, colourful people I've had the pleasure to "meet". This @reusablenappyweekofficial we have seen the #PassTheNappy trend return, so here are some suggestions: 🫳 they can be used on siblings, I used the same 20 nappies full time on my first 3 babies. 🫳 they can be passed to friends & family members, I’ve passed nappies to my sister-in-law and several friends who have been curious to try them. 🫳 they can be sold on @renappyshop , a dedicated online shop for preloved nappies. They will sell your nappies on your behalf when there’s availability or you can sell yourself through their marketplace. 🫳 sell through Facebook pages or Marketplace, often selling locally so buyers can avoid postage costs. 🫳 contact a local nappy library and ask whether they are accepting donations. If they can’t use them they will often sell them on your behalf to raise funds for the library. 🫳 research local charities as some food banks or refuges will take reusable nappies. 🫳 donate to the @therainbowlegacy2022 , A Gambian charity providing nappies to the maternity hospital and others who need them. (They also take reusable period products). 🫳 send them to @thenappyladyuk who will distribute them to people in need on your behalf. They work with local and overseas charities. This week has been Reusable Nappy Week and even though this little guy is now 6 and well out of them I will forever sing their praises because there’s just so much to love about them: - For starters this was my gateway to living a more eco-friendly life and making many more swaps - They reduce your household waste and single use plastic waste (disposables are made from plastic) - They are chemical and perfume free - They are better for babies skin - You never run out - They save you money in the long run - They can be sold on so you can make some of your money back - They look fab and with so many styles and designs around you’ll find looks you’ll love - They are more comfortable for your baby/child to wear - No poonamis! - Modern cloth nappies are easy to care for - I promise! - Nappies grow with your child - They can be used on multiple children increasing those savings over years and years - They have now been scientifically proven by DEFRA to be better for the environment than disposables - You can meet a wonderful supportive community both online and IRL Having used disposables with my first and then reusables with my second I have experiences of both sides and I can honestly say reusables come out on top. We're talking all about #onechangebigdifference this Reusable Nappy Week and what's better motivation than helping your child navigate potty training? Although there are no definitive statistics that show how much quicker children potty train in cloth vs. disposable, there has been a general trend for children being in nappies longer since the introduction and gain in popularity of the disposable. The main point being: disposable nappies wick the moisture away from the skin so that babies feel dry. Now what relevance does that have to modern cloth nappies? Whilst it's true that traditional nappies (terries and muslins) don't have a stay dry feel once used, many modern cloth nappies do. And it's a big selling point! Of course cloth users want their babies to feel comfortable too! The joy of modern cloth is that it can be adapted to help the wearer feel wet. This means your child will associate peeing with feeling wet and begin to recognise what is occurring. WHY CLOTH NAPPIES? Being out and about with the nappy library this week, I've had a few people ask me about how I got into running the library, and cloth nappies generally. My reason for using cloth nappies was environmental, but even with that reason in mind, I had no idea just how far it would take me down the sustainability route. I especially couldn't bear the idea of all those nappies that would be thrown in the bin. I like to think of myself as always having been a little bit eco conscious, but getting into cloth nappies led to me finding out about other items such as reusable period products, and opened my eyes to things like issues with fast fashion. But that's one of the benefits of using cloth nappies - for some people, it's a gateway into a whole new way of living! I love that it's a bit of continuity between the boys too - it's a bit like having your youngest wear a favourite outfit from when your eldest was younger. Going to cloth diaper your newborn baby? 👶🤰 And don't know what to buy? 🤔 It is easy to spend a lot of money on cloth diapers, that you might not be using once your newborn has arrived and you've tried them on. You have no idea what size and shape your little baby will be, and what kind of cloth diaper will fit him/her the best. 🤷♀️ 👩🎓 Read on for my best advice - and excactly what I did myself while I was expecting my baby to arrive and wanted to use cloth diapers from day one: 1) Only buy one or a few of each kind of newborn diapers, that you think you want to use. (or even better - borrow some from a friend that are out of newborn diapers). 2) Make sure to have a bunch of the old fashioned muslin flat diapers and a snappi to attach them. Youtube how to fold them. 70 x 70 cm will fit a newborn. The reason why I recommend to get those kinds, is, that they usually work quite well for newborn babies, as you can fold them to fit excactly your baby. You can buy a bunch of them for very little money, and if you don't like to use them as a cloth diaper, you can use them for so many other things. - Burp cloth, chanching mat, cloth wipes (cut them into smaller pieces) etc. Consider if you want to use them with a wool or pul/TPU newborn cover - or get both and see what works best. 3) Have a bunch of Stretchy Prefolds for Newborns. Same reasons as with the flat diapers. - They don't cost the earth, and you can easily use them as a trifolded inserts in any cloth diaper cover later, when your baby needs bigger diapers (onesize or sized, PUL, wool, pocket etc.). 4) Test! Once the baby has arrived, all the fun begins 😍 Try out what works best for you and your baby! When you have tried the different newborn diapers - you will know what you want more of! ✨ 5) Ask for advice! This is very important! As it can be hard to get the right fit on your baby, if you have never tried cloth diapers before. So ask experienced cloth diaper moms or the cloth diaper store where you bought the diapers if there is anything you should adjust to make it work! Our youngest #flashingthefluff today in his gorgeous @petitlulu_eu SIO. We actually got these for our eldest when he was in his rolls on rolls phase of babyhood as we were finding leg elastics were snug on his croissant legs. One of the main questions parents ask about cloth nappies is if they really are more environmentally friendly than disposables. Let’s take a look at the latest research 🕵️♀️ In 2023 the UKs Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs carried out a life cycle assessment comparing the environmental impact of disposables and reusable nappies and it found that: 🌏 Reusable nappies produce 25% less CO2 than single-use disposable nappies 🌏 The environmental impact of production is over 90% lower for a reusable nappy than for disposables 🌏 The environmental impact of disposal of a single-use nappy is 9x higher than for that of a reusable nappy 🌏 Even when factoring in washing and drying, reusable nappies are still the best nappy choice for the environment 🌏 Reusables use 97.5% less raw materials than disposables - 2.5 years of disposables use 128.36Kg v reusables that use 3.22Kg Sounds pretty amazing right?! MAKING LAUNDRY NOT LANDFILL?? Most of us will have seen the statistics along the lines of "using reusable nappies is better because disposables last 500 years in landfill" and whilst I'm not disputing that fact, one thing we need to bear in mind is that a large chunk of our waste in the UK is incinerated. The figures for household waste in England in 2021/2022 said that 47% of local authority and household waste is sent to incineration* and the recent Big Plastic Count 2024 by @greenpeaceuk found that 58% of our plastic waste is incinerated. I haven't been able to find whether that would have included disposable nappies but based on the government's local authority figures, around half of our waste is incinerated so perhaps we need to start turning our attention to this as well, rather than just thinking about landfill? I've even had this conversation with someone before, who suggested that disposables aren't as bad when you consider that the waste is incinerated rather than sent to landfill, and the incineration process generates energy. However: 🌫 incinerators release toxic gases into the air (it can produce more carbon dioxide per tonne than burning coal) [source: Greenpeace] 🌍 new plastic still needs to be produced for nappies, meaning more drilling for oil and more deforestation 🏘 incinerators are more likely to be built in deprived areas, where residents are disproportionately people of colour [source: Greenpeace] 🗑not all incinerated waste is used for energy recovery 🔥 even taking into account energy recovery from incineration, the global warming potention of disposable nappies is still higher than with reusables ** So yes, disposables may be incinerated rather than go to landfill, and some energy may be generated this way, but it is still problematic, and reusable still present a better option!
