Antique Glass! • This is a gorgeous example of Early American Pattern Glass, from 1896! This beauty is referred to as a comport or compote. It features a lovely squared bowl that sits on a wonderful stem, or pedestal. You’ll notice some different pattern details, like stars and diamonds. Many EAPG patterns were designed to replicate cut glass of the same era to create beautiful glass at more affordable pricing. Cut glass was, and is, very expensive. Vintage Pottery! • This brown glaze pottery ladle is lovely. It is unmarked, but was purchased as part of a McCoy lot… It’s a sweet, simple utilitarian piece and measures 10” long. The bowl of the ladle is 4” wide. This is National Gardening Week in the UK, organised by the Royal Horticultural Society to raise awareness of the benefits of gardening and encourage more people to take part in gardening activities. And there's certainly plenty of evidence to show gardening is good for both your body and your mind. Gardens come in all shapes and sizes. This lovely hosta sits in the garden of our friend Kathleen who kindly helps us with the planters at the front of the Gabbler. She has an amazing garden with beautiful views and fabulous flower such as this one - it's a joy to visit whatever the time of year. I have to confess, we're much lazier gardeners with a predominance of shrubs and trees which are easy to care for. Despite all our best efforts the potted shrubs at the entrance of Lord Lovat's Waiting Room Apartment never seem to do well - they're on what used to be the station platform and it's just too hot and windy for most plants. But we do have a wonderful plum tree which produces an abundance of fruit most summers. And Garry makes plum jam, some of which features in Kirsty's fabulous bread and butter pudding in our new dinner to Celebrate Beauly and the Black Isle. Back in the 80’s, Farmer Joe saw that the fertilizers, pesticides, and herbicides that were commonly used in agriculture were harming workers and the environment. So he convinced his father, Joe Sr., to transition the farm over to organic. By 1986, the farm had transitioned completely over to organic farming and was certified organic by CCOF. We stay true to the ideals of organic for many reasons. One of the key reasons is that organic food production protects our health. It protects the health of farm workers. It protects the health of the environment and all the living creatures that share our space. It protects our customers. At just over 100 acres of production, we are a small farm. We are able to watch over and carefully monitor our crops. We are able to manage them with care, NOT with sprays. In fact, we do not use any sprays, not even kinds that are technically allowed under current regulations. We are excited to see organic production continue to grow and are thrilled with recent legislation that will help increase the percentage of organic production in California.
