Today was Local Yarn Shop Day. I joined the @theyarnrebels bus tour to shop some local Edmonton Yarn Shops. The day started @statement_junkie. Purchases far left, a set of @lykkemakehappy needles, sock yarn, and a couple of dishcloth yarns. Next stop was @littlebluefibrestudio. I got a felted donut kit, and a skein of yarn. On to @numanayarns for their pop up shop. I picked up some DK weight and fingering yarn from @flockfibre, a kit from @baarealis_fibre, and a skein of sport weight yarn from @numanayarns. After a lunch of pinto bean tacos @superamigosmexican it was on to @yarn_divas where I picked up a skein of their own dyed yarn with a mixture of yak and silk and a notion bag because it had a barred rock chicken with a cat!!! On the way home I picked up fresh fruit @handwproduce. Spring kohlrabi is simply the best. What’s not to love? The whole plant is edible and really freaking tasty. We will have 3 different colours to choose from this year, green, white and purple. White comes across the creamiest but the purple is the most nutrient dense and all are stunning. The first small batch went into Produce Boxes this week and some will be coming with us to the @strathconamarket this Saturday. The leaves as shown in the photos are the best ‘wrap’ green that we have found. It has great texture that holds everything together with a slight brassica flavour. We also love to chop up the greens and add into pasta sauces, savoury pies, salads, sautéed with garlic and chilies, and in stir fries. Toss some into your juicer or blender for super healthy green smoothie and juice. When you are shopping for kohlrabi and see that the plant has its leaves still on, that a great sign its been recently harvested. Remove the greens when you get home, it will keep the bulb juicer. The bulb is perfectly juicy and makes great base for coleslaws, Asian or apple slaws, add into salads, sliced thin with a splash of lemon juice and salt and pepper for a quick but healthy snack or slice them thin and lay the pieces flat on a sandwich or wrap for the biggest wow factor ever. Love juicing the bulbs or hallowing them out and baking them stuffed with rice, cheese, meat and veggies. Cube them up and roast them in the oven with seasonal herbs, lemon juice and your favourite oil. They are even great on the BBQ. Steak and ratatouille for dinner last night using home grown veggies (zucchini, capsicum, banana peppers, eggplant, tomatoes and Thai chili). Over summer, I had lots of veggies perfect for ratatouille, so I chopped and froze them away with some sliced onions in a zip lock bag to use later in the year. Last night, I pulled out a bag and cooked it from frozen, adding in a handful of mixed olives. It turned out beautifully. I will definitely be freezing more of these ratatouille packs next summer. Let’s talk about…..last day of a work trip or even work week for that matter! So if you’ve been following along, I left Monday for my usual work trip up the central coast of California. I do this trip 3 or 4 times a year, usually staying in hotels….sometimes by myself, and sometimes with a friend/co worker. If you’re been following, you saw some of the choices I made. Sometimes out to dinner, one night at a friend’s house, last night, salad bar from a local market. By the time last night had rolled around, I was CRAVING a big salad. That salad bar fit the bill, as I could pick and choose ALL that I wanted. (Great tip when traveling-go to Trader Joe’s or a local market for “veggies most”.) Last night I even got a small container of guacamole for some extra veggie “dipping” and to supplement the salad dressing. This morning back to what works….a filling breakfast , so I don’t want to start “picking” at my candy samples in the car🤦‍♀️. In the past, traveling home the last day, still seeing customers along the way, I would arrive home, sometimes famished, sometimes bloated for not making the greatest food choices all week….and invariably I’d just order pizza - also not a great choice🤦‍♀️). Today? Today I’ll most likely have my boyfriend order dinner from our local Mediterranean restaurant….where I usually get salmon veggie kebabs and steamed veggies! Talk about a switch in mindset. The best part? My weight will be down tomorrow, as opposed to up. Here's how we made it: 1 lb (454g) baby spinach, washed 1 can (540ml/19oz) navy beans, drained & rinsed (can use any bean of choice) 1/4 c sundried tomatoes, sliced (if using packed in oil, drain oil) 3 tbsp Evoo 2 cloves garlic, sliced Salt & pepper In a large deep pan, add evoo & garlic on medium heat. Do not burn garlic. When fragrant, add sundried tomatoes & spinach. Toss gently in oil & begin wilting the greens. Once wilted, add beans & toss. Season with s&p to taste. I was feeling spicy pasta tonight and after a stop at the market, came home with some fresh spicy sausage to mix in (and add BIG flavour) to my ground beef. I cooked the ground beef and sausage with onions and garlic. Once it was fully cooked, I took it out of the pot and drained the excess fat away. Then, I filled the pot up with more onions, garlic, peppers, mushrooms, frozen peas, a tomato, dry basil (lots) and black pepper (lots and lots) and sautèed the works. Once the veggies were starting to brown, I tossed the beef back in, added a splash of red wine and a handful of frozen basil and called it done. I put half aside for tomorrow night and added cooked penne to the rest and served it up. Spicy pasta in 20 minutes. Struggling with your relationship with food? Of course you are! These behaviours are literally taught to us. When ‘food discipline’ is celebrated, and praised as being ‘healthy’, it makes sense that our food relationship would suffer. ▶️ Only Eating When You Are Hungry Our hunger cues aren’t that reliable (especially when you suffer from constant restriction and diet cycles - in these cases they can be majorly stunted). Even if you ARE really in tune with your hunger cues, there are still many times where we need to eat when we ‘aren’t hungry’: when we are sick, sad, busy, stressed (just to name a few). ▶️ Intentionally Eating Less When We Haven’t Exercised Our body deserves (and needs) sufficient fuel on ALL days. ▶️ Only Eating The Recommended Serving Size Food label serving sizes can be entirely decided by the manufacturer. This means there are no set rules, manufacturers can just make up number and put that as the ‘serving size’.
