I worked somewhere that after much advocating all job descriptions were reevaluated to make sure the requirements that could make people feel excluded (like the job would not be accessible and making people feel they shouldn't apply) or make disabled people not get jobs were taken out of position descriptions. This was one thing that came out of the DEI committee, so I imagine many workplaces have not done this work. Especially as there would have to be disability representation, likely, for places to realize it needs to happen. If you could meet any character from a book, who would it be and why? ㅤ Me? I’d love to meet my very own Bel, from Night’s Reign. To me, she’s everything a woman should be. Strong, intelligent, caring, capable, resilient, and much, much more. ㅤ Oh, and there’s this little thing: she’s wheelchair dependent, just like me. And just like me, she doesn’t let her disability get in the way of enjoying her life to the fullest. That’s really the cherry on top. ㅤ Have you read Night’s Reign? If not, go grab your own copy right now, while it’s on Sale from $4.99 to only $2.99 ㅤ Don’t miss out! Click the link in my bio. ㅤ https://vist.ly/y95i

What a lot of people tend to forget is that there is a difference between being accessible (I.E wheelchair access, disabled toilets, disabled hotel rooms, etc) and being inclusive (welcoming disabled people into the space, ensuring that their needs are met) Just because you are accessible - doesn’t automatically equate to inclusive. Michael is a truly interesting character on this topic, please go give it a listen on Apple Podcasts, Spotify or watch with full captions on YouTube. With a pang of regret he remembered his beautiful home in Tan’Rabu, with the long gauze curtains that filtered the harsh glare of the tropical daylight, and the buzzing fans that spread a welcome breeze in the almost unbearable heat inside. He’d had beautiful, well-crafted furniture, and slept between soft silken sheets. He had been living a dream there. A dream that ended in a nightmare on the day Zia died. ㅤ His vision momentarily blurred, he forced himself up from the sofa. He blinked once, then let his gaze wander the room. The dark oak table, which had clearly seen better days, would still make a fine desk. If he put it over there by the window, he could watch the chickens frisking about in the garden when his work threatened to overwhelm him. He needed to unpack his books as soon as possible. But that meant he’d have to assemble his bookcase first, and right now he couldn’t face the effort involved. ㅤ Most of his clothes were still in his travel bags, getting wrinkly and smelly. But he hadn’t found his clothes hangers yet. So much work, and so little energy. ㅤ And what if… but no! He should not allow himself to think like that. He was safe here. The end of the civilised world. Was that not what Beldenka had called the Barlows? Surely, King Hanassan and his cronies would never think to look for him here, in this gods-abandoned settlement. ㅤ Read Night’s Reign by Daan Katz today! Today we’re excited to introduce a spunky, sassy, badass feature… Meet Karen! 🫶 “Hi I’m Karen! I’m 23 years old and I have SMA type 2. I was born in Chernivtsi, Ukraine and moved to Los Angeles after getting my diagnosis when I was 6 months old. I recently got my bachelors in environmental science at UCLA, and I’m currently getting my Masters and PhD in Biophysical Geography where I get to study the beautiful nature of Hawaii, so I’m super excited to become a Triple Bruin! Outside of academics, I love doing stand up comedy on weekends and laughing about the stupidity of ableism, and I also love embracing my sapphic side under the disco lights of Weho. My style is a mix of all aspects of my identity, but I love showing off my tats to remind people that anyone with a disability can be a badass. I consider myself a mermaid by day and a siren by night, watch out cause you might get swept into these waters!” #disabledrepresentation #equality #tattoosarefashionable #inkedup #ucla #badass

Why do we refer to disability advocates as “self-advocates” when most people of a community that advocate it are called “advocates”? I saw something that said disability is the only group that if you are a part of it you are called a self-advocate rather than an advocate. This is messed up. You are a “self-advocate” if you are only advocating for yourself and you are an “advocate” if you are advocating more broadly. I do think if you want to be an advocate you have a responsibility to listen to other people as well. I have come to realize that many people only know how they experience disability; they only talk about chronic illness or only talk about THEIR autism. It can be helpful to specialize, to some extent, as long as it is in a way where you are working on understanding other people. Some may use the language of “my” characteristics, which is not what I have difficulty with. Some people may describe something with wording that would indicate that is all it is; this could lead to misunderstandings by non-autistic folks, and make some autistic folks feel excluded (both directly and indirectly). As someone who fully realized I am disabled because I was working in disability services and have known many people with a variety of disabilities, I also think it would be ideal if we worked together across disability to support disabled folks with different disabilities than our own. We are more powerful together! If we are white or middle class or from the US,... we should also be making an effort to understand the disability experience of those that do not have the same privileges. This is necessary for us to be able to work together. [Six slides, the first slide with a green background with a black rectangle on top and saying the above text. When you can’t find a good role model, be one Er zijn weinig mensen in de politiek die disabled zijn.

We’re bringing back features this week with a very bright spotlight… Meet Andrew! 🔥 “Hey everyone! My name is Andrew Cherico, I’m 20 years old, and I have SMA type 3. I am from New York but currently living in Orlando, Florida while attending the University of Central Florida as a sophomore majoring in journalism. Aside from being a student, I am a credentialed sports reporter who covers the school’s athletics as well as NBA Games. I am also in a fraternity that allows me to be with people I call my brothers and go on the best of adventures. Aside from my busy school life, I enjoy playing video games of all kinds! AND fun fact, I’m Dominican, Puerto Rican, Irish, and Italian. Growing up in the inner city of New York, fashion/style is everything so at young age, I always wanted to have the most popular clothes and sneakers. I still collect sneakers to this day and the best part, they never get dirty! Aside from clothing, an aspect I take pride in is my hair, I’m proud to say I can do many different hair styles such and buns, braids, and twists. I always love to switch it up as often as possible. I take pride in my fashion and different styles because growing up I felt limited by my disability, but I realized once I started feeling confident in what I wore nobody can stop me from having the best outfit in the room.” #disabledfashion #disabledrepresentation #smatype3 #nycfashion #sportsreporter #bestoutfitintheroom

During the interval at tonight's performance, I had to run out to greet this stunning lady! Sarah is a fellow actress who has #FunctionalNeurologicalDisorder, just like me👸👸🏾 The highlight of my @thedriftersgirlmusical experience has been the number of #FND patients & disabled individuals who have come to see the show knowing there was a cast member (even an offstage cover) they could relate to. Meeting with and hearing from each one has been more meaningful than most will ever understand. It is really isolating not to know anyone else who is like you, especially in this industry. People are quick to question your belonging due to a lack of representation. This is my first time having the privilege of meeting another performer with my condition, & it has left me with an unexpectedly frothy feeling of visibility. Despite all she has been through, Sarah continues to shine onstage & screen, and all with an infectious disposition glitters with champagne and sunshine. What a timely #fndawareness Month gift! Her Insta is coming soon -- once it's arrived, I'll add it to this post so you can give her a follow! Fun fact for my fellow #JaneAusten fans: She recently performed in a production of #PrideAndPrejudice😍 Thank you for coming, Sarah🥰 And for repping @disabilityhorizons #AssumeNothing🙏🏾♿️ . . . You can learn more about functional neurological disorder & see how you can help us secure our futures by following @fndhopeuk @fnd_hope; the charity that helped is connect in the first place!

m y c h a e l a • @mychaela_josiah • "I’m 21 years old and from Louisville, KY. I was diagnosed with cerebral palsy at birth — when I was younger I didn’t know how to feel about having CP, but as I’ve gotten older I’ve just learned to embrace it. CP will always be a part of me. In 2017 I decided to make rainbow loom bracelets to bring awareness to cerebral palsy. I always think it’s important to show people with disabilities doing incredible things. I recently opened my own online store — this has been a passion of mine for years. I just want to show that if you put your mind to something, you can do amazing things. I want to be an example for younger girls with CP and inspire them to do whatever they want to do in life. You’re not alone and everyone’s a star in their own way. What I have learned from CP is to not give and keep pushing when things are hard in life. #CPstrong #CP #CerebralPalsy #disability #disabled #RepresentationMatters #DisabledRepresentation #AFO #braces

I am so honored to have been nominated for @rarerevolutionmagazine @rare_youth_revolution's #NextGen as part of their #WomenInRare Edition. This #RareUnder30 roster is "a dedicated feature which celebrates the next generation of female movers and shakers in the rare disease world." It is a privilege to be able to represent my #necrotizingenterocolitis & #functionalneurologicaldisorder communities, and to have an opportunity to share what I'm proud of, what motivates me, and what I've learned from a youth that has been heavily shaped by a determination to survive. It is an even greater privilege to share this space with such admirable women in this community, including trailblazer #NeenaNizar, whom I had the pleasure of meeting at the @chanzuckerberginitiative's #RareAsOne Meeting in 2022. I encourage you to acquaint yourself with these leaders who are so tenacious & hopeful of heart that their unfathomable challenges have turned them into innovators and activists rather than victims. Please have a read, give these women a follow, and share this edition with your networks. By amplifying our voices, you are not just furthering our cause; you are saving our lives. ... Inclusion ⤵️ Our page is all about inclusion. The reason I created this page is for disabled dog owners to feel included. I’ve always aimed to represent disabled people in areas of the dog world where they aren’t always included. When Sally from the @thecaninecode approached us and asked if we wanted to be on board from an inclusion aspect, I had to yes. The canine code is going to be the UK’s first dog nutritional membership and to think disabled dog owners are going to be represented and included just makes my heart so happy. A wise lady once told me ‘it’s not about how many door you knockdown, it’s about how many doors you bang on’ and never is a truer word spoken. Here’s goes to continuing to represent the disabled dog owner community in 2024🙌🏻 #disabledrepresentation #disabilityawareness #wheelchairuser #disabledwoman #westie #westhighlandwhiteterrier #disabledadvocate

Last year I was selected as part of the second cohort of the 20/20 #DecolonisingTheArts programme with UAL - a national commissioning and network programme directly investing in the careers of a new generation of ethnically minoritised and diverse artists. I have been working with Birmingham Museums Trust, delving into their archives and looking at how disabled people have been represented across the years. Next year I will be creating an exhibition in the Museum to include works from the archives alongside a commissioned new work by me, which I cannot wait to get started on! Here I am within the archives looking at ‘The Blind Men of Jericho’ by Nicola Poussin. This is what Autism ‘looks’ like…. I’ve been thinking a lot about the ‘look of’ disability recently. It started as a conversation for my next book with a contact; I spoke about this on @disabledandproudpodcast. I wrote about the abuse I get in public on @substack. In editing @drm_uk, it was painful - because finally, people felt ‘seen’, and they told me so. But there’s also been a lot written about - such as the school photo firm that actively erased SEN children. It shouldn’t shock us. If you are, then you haven’t been listening. I didn’t see anything about ASD when growing up. I’m 9 years past diagnosis, and for a long time I felt ashamed - simply for the idea of ‘difference’. Disability representation has changed so much - I remember crying at seeing @ruthmadeley in Then Barbara Met Alan, for instance. I took my ‘adopted’ niece & nephew out recently - & the idea of visibility had made them far more confident, and so much happier. I love that. 🩷 Awareness is not needed, but acceptance is 💪 📸: @debburrowsphotographer 👗: @joanieclothing 💍: @poshtottydesigns 🦯: @neowalksticks #AutismAcceptanceWeek #AutismAwareness #ActuallyAutistic #ASD #ASC #Disability #DisabledAnd #DisabledRepresentation #ChickWithAStick #BabeWithAMobilityAid #SEN #SEND

Each month, I will be taking the books from the main list of 2024 Disabled and Neurodivergent Book and Comic Releases and sharing them with more details. The main list is so long that I can’t add in covers and plot summaries without making it a loading nightmare. Now, I get to show these amazing titles in full every month. This month has been chaos, and I'm so sorry it took so long. I'm very grateful to the people who helped me get this post out. 2024 is bringing good things ✨ - I’m getting back into my childhood element as an adult by rejoining my former power soccer team (the ONLY sport for people in power wheelchairs). The sport has advanced SO MUCH since I last played over a decade ago and I’m incredibly excited to be a part of this community again ⚽️ - Jason and I made our first big kid purchase and invested in a split king bed! Thinking about how disabled performers and artists are systematically left out of the arts because of inaccessibility, and then arts orgs say there are no disabled artists for them to authentically cast 🤷🏼‍♀️ Disabled ex-musicians and performers, I’d love to make a reel in future sharing YOUR stories of leaving the performing arts industry because it wasn’t accessible to you (anon or otherwise, just let me know!) - drop them in the comments and I’ll add them to the reel!

Conditions of A Heart by Bethany Mangle (she/her) I recognize that the last few individual grid post reviews have been for contemporary young adult novels, but I can’t help it that these writers keep knocking it out of the park! Thank you to Netgallery for giving me an early release copy of Take All of Us by Natalie Leif, this book will be available for purchase on June fourth of 2024. Title: Take All Of Us Author: Natalie Leif Genre: LGBTQ+/Horror/Teens & Young Adult Page Count: 254 Publisher: Holiday House/Peach Tree/Pixel+Ink My Rating: ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ My spoiler free review: I’ve really been in the mood for a book with zombies in it and Take All of Us delivered! This book has zombies, queer, and disabled representation that I believe was written greatly. All of the characters are very lovable, I was a little hesitant about the friendships at first because they were very instant but the found family aspect was amazing, I loved all of our characters and their little quirks, the friendships really lead this book and I absolutely loved it. I however wasn’t very fond of the romance, Ian and Eric were nice friends and I could definitely see a romance happening (we kinda get one) but I think it just needed some more development. We don’t get enough time with Eric to really know or understand him, we pretty much just get what Ian says about him. We just get very little time to really see the relationship/friendship between them and I feel if we did get just a bit more the romance would have felt more flushed out. -Tags- #netgalley #netgalleryreviewer #netgalleryreview #netgalleryreads #netgalleryarcs #review #bookrecommendations #bookreview #bookreccomendation #bookreviewer #bookreviews #bookrecs #ebook #comingsoon #lgbtq #zombie #horrorbook #lgbtqbooks #queer #queeromance #romance #youngadult #arc #arcbooks #advancedreaderscopy #natalieleif #Takeallofus #disabledrepresentation #queerepresentation #foundfamily

Hearing about Paddy Considine’s performance on ‘House of the Dragon’ was bittersweet for me. On the one hand, I am ECSTATIC to see an openly-Autistic actor playing a not-explicitly-Autistic character on a major tv series. On the other hand, I felt a bit icky about him playing a character with a visible disability/facial disfigurement. It’s better than a non-Disabled actor playing the role, but it’s still a bit morally ambiguous. As a non-visibly-Disabled person, I’m not sure I’d feel completely comfortable taking on the role of a visibly-Disabled character, even if it was a condition that progressed like Viserys’ illness did in HotD. (If they can give an actor without facial differences prosthetics to make it look like he has facial differences, surely they could go in reverse too!) I’d love to hear my fellow Disabled people’s thoughts on this - especially people with craniofacial differences and/or disfigurements in real life. Thank you! #DisabilityRepresentation #HouseoftheDragon #PaddyConsidine #Viserys #FacialDifferences #CraniofacialDifferences #DisabledActor #AutisticActor #DisabledRepresentation

It is so important to have disabled mentors, people with lived experience of the thing. Many disabled people do not grow up in a family of disabled people. This means even more than most young people that they may not identify with what their people are telling them. The advice their parents or other people in their lives have may not be applicable (or even if it may be, the young person may not know how to adapt it for their life). Having someone that feels like they have been through some if the same things can make it a lot easier to relate to. I have seen it more than once that a student having mentors they feel are like themselves made so much difference. It is incredibly important for young disabled people to see disabled people living… I worked with a DeafBlind student that had DeafBlind friends that were around their age. They had never had an older mentor, so I made an effort to see if my student could join a social group of DeafBlind adults, but I never got a response. Finally, I asked a DeafBlind former co-worker if the student could volunteer with them. This made a huge difference. Us hearing folx could not get through on some stuff, like explaining how social things would be perceived by a boss. If the DeafBlind mentor said it, it was real. The student's new mentor even went out of their way to get off work and take the city bus to go to the student's graduation. It meant so much to the student! It is incredibly important for young disabled people to see disabled people living! 𝐍𝐨 𝐬𝐥𝐞𝐞𝐩 𝐦𝐨𝐝𝐞 𝐚𝐜𝐭𝐢𝐯𝐚𝐭𝐞𝐝..💤🥱😴 FULL STOMA BAG REPRESENTATION 🍓🖤 My own personal alarm clock ⏰ Most of my content you would either see more or less a fresh bag or an empty flat one. Which in reality isn’t what my bag looks like most of the time. It’s either full, crinkled & looks old. Especially at the moment where I’m navigating my way through a very tough traumatic time in my life & trying to grieve. The last thing I’m worried about is what my bag looks like. As long as it’s not leaking. This is more a natural reality with a stoma bag. This picture was taken first thing early morning & had been emptied during the night as well. Sometimes this can happen with an ileostomy my output is more liquid as it’s further up in the bowel system so has less time internally to form. But with my diagnosis’ my insides can be rather slow at times as well & I get a lot of partial & full blockages. Which means it can all come out in one go, after nothing for hours & hours. Then it can change to filling up constantly. It also causes my bag to blow up due to trapped wind, which is known as ballooning. Which is what you see in this picture. A con of having a stoma. I haven’t found anything to help this issue as of yet I’ve had my bag 10 years now. I can’t get round not emptying during the night either. Everyone’s journeys with their stomas are unique to them. This is more a natural representation of what Stoma Bags can look like outside of a set up photo/reel. #stomalife #stomaawareness #stomabag #ileostomywarrior #ileostomybag #disabledgirl #disabledrepresentation #disabilityawareness #invisibleillness #awarenessisthekey #disabilityinclusion #reality #boweldisease #representation #beyourself #traumahealing #grieving #personalalarm #colostomy #ostomybag #ostomywarrior #ostomyproud #ostomatelife #ostomate #stomanurse #reallife 🍎

It is incredibly important to more than disabled people to see disabled people living. It is incredibly important for parents with disabled kids to see disabled people living… I had a student that wanted to work with kids. There was a schedule conflict, so we could not get him a volunteer opportunity at a daycare (he was only available during the time daycares do nap time). We were able to find him a position at a physical therapy office for kids. He cleaned, and he loved it. He loved it because he went to a similar office when he was little and the kids liked him. He had a job coach that would go check on him. One day, one of the kids mom’s explained how much it meant to her to see him there. She had not seen someone with a similar disability to her son, and it helped her to be able to envision his future. It is incredibly important for parents with disabled kids (or potential future parents) to see disabled people living! I have been thinking a lot about how important it is to see people you identify with at different ages and how important it is to see people different than yourself… If young people do not have mentors like themself, see characters like themselves in movies, … they do not always think they will live to be an adult. If people do not see a group, they think that group does not exist (anymore). It is incredibly important to more than trans and non-dinary kids to see trans and non-binary adults living. It is incredibly important to more than native people to see native people living. It is incredibly important to more than disabled people to see disabled people living. Story cont. The character of “Echo” first appeared in Daredevil issue nine in 1999 and has been everything from a villain to a love interest throughout the comics. Though some viewers are familiar with the story of Maya Lopez (Alaqua Cox), for others, the story of the deaf, indigenous and amputee character was a refreshing story to see in an oversaturated genre of typically white male, strong heroes. “Echo” was released early this year after months-long delays due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes that halted much of Hollywood. While Lopez has been briefly introduced to the cinematic universe through her appearance in Hawkeye as the commander of the Tracksuit Mafia, “Echo” is the first multi-episode series to feature her as the main character. There were many things to like about the show, including costuming, American Sign Language, indigenous and deaf representation, and several well-executed fight scenes. However, there were several instances in which the show was confusing. - To continue reading, visit the North Texas Daily at the link in my bio or by searching NTDaily.com 🖼️: By Allie Garza This article was originally published Jan. 27, 2024 #echo #marvelcinematicuniverse #mcu #review #dose #ntdaily #northtexasdaily #unt #universityofnorthtexas #studentjournalism #studentjournalist #deafrepresentation #indigenousrepresentation #disabledrepresentation

Happy Rare Disease Day! 🧬 In my lifetime, I’ve learned to believe in the idea that everything happens for a reason! One of those things is a little genetic mishap that occurred when I was just a tiny embryo in the womb. Spinal Muscular Atrophy, the #1 leading genetic killer of children, has brought me a lot of grief, but DAMN has it also given me a magical life. I was lucky enough to be born into an extremely supportive family, I made a childhood best friend (who also has a rare disease), I found and was welcomed warmly into the entire SMA community, I met the love of my life, I learned to drive… all of these things may not have happened the way they did if it wasn’t for having a rare disease. This life is the one I was supposed to be born into ✨ #RareDiseaseDay #SpinalMuscularAtrophy #disabledrepresentation

It'll be hanging next to my other bodyart self-portrait "Flowers in the face of my Neckbrace" that won 1st place at Lane Co. Fair (2023) . (in Portrait Photography, amateur) It's the first time that photo will be visible to the public since it won the award. I haven't posted it cuz honestly I don't wanna see it in some random AI art. NewZone is doing a community show, Zone 4 All, which is a great opportunity that I decided to participate in. #grateful NewZone gallery is open Tuesday to Sunday 12-6pm. I am not really sure why those of us who have received or get various disability services are not listened to more about those services. (I say that, but I know it is ableism.) If the education system in the United States at all listened to disabled adults, it would be clear that language needs to change. It is hard to be in meetings and hear people openly say things that are not acceptable terminology. (It is very clear who knows zero disabled adults outside of work.) I sometimes cringe because in legal paperwork or in meetings I have to use outdated ableist language that the education system shares with the medical system. Providing someone something they need is not “special!” It is simply giving them access. Listen to disabled adults and change the language used in education. I have always had difficulty advocating for myself. I learned to do it through my students! I asked for accommodations at work so I was doing what I told my students to do. I asked for accommodations so I could talk to my students about the experience. I personally learned things when I read and started teaching a self-determination curriculum! I am so grateful to my students for helping me learn this skill. [Green background with a white box and the text "I learned to advocate for myself through my students."]

Recently, I was talking to a student, and he asked why I share with my co-workers that I have been passing out.  I explained that I wanted them to know in case they found me on the floor.   Later, he asked why I tell my students.  I told him that it was for the same reason "they can help or get help" and "I feel like some of my students feel they are the only ones" going through the things they are going through.  I also said, "I want to show them that other people are going through things as well." His response was a very knowing "you are right," as he has had health stuff that is also important to let people know about too.  I felt like he really felt my reasoning. This makes me grateful for a co-worker who, with humor, let co-workers know that she has diabetes so we wouldn't "freak out if (we) find (her) on the floor." [Charcoal grey background with a white box and the text "A student asked my why I share my medical information."]

A little about me When I was in school, I received special education services. While becoming a special education teacher, I often reflected on the education I and my classmates received and realized just how much the law is not necessarily followed in providing education. I have since realized just how many educators clearly do not have the life experiences I have had. I grew up working class and going to school with mostly other lower income and BIPOC classmates. We were often automatically assumed to not be going to college. While these experiences apparently do not usually lead to being a special education teacher, these are just a couple ways I used my life experience to inform how I teach every day.
