Moving is a stressful event for anybody and being autistic adds some additional challenges. Having a hard time with change, new people, and new environments. Getting overwhelmed easily and burnt out. Struggling to get things done without the assistance or presence of a support person. Needing structure in a time that is inherently chaotic. (These are just some of the things I have personally encountered). I'm fortunate enough to have a place to live while I move so I can do it in a more organized and paced manner. I have family members who are helping me out. I realize these things are not things that are always realistically possible, but since I have those advantages I'm definitely utilizing them. It doesn't make it a stress free process, but it certainly helps. Like a lot of autistic people, I struggle a lot with sleep. I've been trying to find the perfect sleep routine, but when something works one night, it makes things worse the next. Weighted blanket or no weighted blanket? Sleep sound app or no sleep sound app? Earplugs or no earplugs? Nothing seems to stay consistently helpful or not helpful. The only thing I never change is taking my medication but everything else is trail and error every night. Savoury Peanut Butter dishes were a huge game-changer for me ! - as someone who had been eating Peanut Butter porridge for dinner seven days a week , I was absolutely FLOORED to find out I could cook ‘not-breakfast’ foods with PB ! This Peanut Butter Stew was inspired by my West-African University Roommate . I was always quite jealous of how her cooking smelt , and she was kind enough to teach me more about the spices she used , and why , and how they influenced the flavour of the dishes ! Now , this was by no means a traditional dish - I made many amendments , and couldn’t possibly claim any credit or authenticity , however , it was delightful to eat ! I am already excited to make it again ! When things don’t work out how you expect… what do you do??? Let me tell you about how my pottery experience tells me something about life! The first attempt is the one with the lemon in it. A bit rough, lumpy & uneven… but it is the best half a lemon and avocado container we’ve ever had! Then I went on to the slab build. (The tall tube with the butterflies). It went a bit wrong, but I decided to make it a design feature and the log vase was born! My third attempt is the blue one. I tried to do that one all on my lonesome. The lack of support shows. But is is still lovely and the colour makes my heart sing! My last attempt went seriously wrong. I was rushing. The top went all wobbly like on the credits of great pottery throwdown! But, always one to make the best of a difficult situation, I trimmed off rhe rubbish bits and went for a little ring/butter bowl. It feels lovely with the cream glaze too. Very rustic! The one I like best is the bigger red bowl. Guess what? I had the potter by my shoulder, telling me where to pull, how to shape, how fast to go, and how to make that lovely cute little spiral in the middle…. It feels great in the hand too. It was utterly absorbing and a brilliant chance to get into a flow state. You would not believe the number of people I’ve spoken too since who said they did pottery at school. At school! Happy (Belated) Limb Difference Awareness Month! April is Limb Loss/Limb Difference Awareness Month! You might see it called either or both and that is valid! I know it's May now, but I had this post almost ready to go, so why abandon it now! Something I used to talk about quite a lot when I first delved into the internet as a teenager is my limb difference. I was quite involved in the online community, as growing up in the 90's and 00's, there just wasn't the opportunity to meet others like me and share experiences. The internet gave me the best platform to be able to speak to others going through similar struggles that I did, and feel less alone. By far the best support network I ever found was The Lucky Fin Project (inspired of course, by Nemo's lucky fin in Finding Nemo), an incredible organisation who provide a community for those with limb differences all over the world! I highly recommend you check them out! They are a truly a lifeline for people like me and their loved ones. I've not spoken about my limb difference online for quite a long time now. This isn't because I am trying to hide it (far from it! I am proud as heck of my hand and always have been!), but more because other things have sort of taken priority over the past few years, such as discovering my Queer and Autistic self, struggling with chronic fatigue and mental health difficulties, and generally trying to get through uni and working life! But, I figured, I have this little corner of the internet now, so why not share my story for those who might not know this about me! During ultrasounds when my mum was pregnant with my twin sister and I, they noticed that they couldn't see my whole hand, but the assumption was made that I was just holding my hand in a fist. No more was thought of it! So imagine my family's shock when I popped out with a limb difference! (continued in comments)

I went with my sister and nephews to the beach. It was a little chilly with the wind but it was so nice to be in the sun and stuff my pockets with rocks, which I dont need any more of but obviously I took them anyway. How can you go to the beach and not leave with rocks? I also met a very nice ladybug and made a very mediocre sand hill covered in rocks and topped with a stick, but it was fun. We collected dasies and dandelions which were EVERYWHERE. I always feel happy when I'm by the water. I've never had a close friendship in my life. And part of the reason is not having many people in my life who actively want to keep me in their life. But another reason is that I have a low capacity for socialization. Some people need to have constant contact and interaction with people to maintain friendships and I can't provide that. There are a couple of people in my life who I consider friends. Am I their best friend? No. But they reach out to me every so often and I reach out to them sometimes too. I enjoy them, even though it can be draining to be social. It's also really frustrating when things that I enjoy drain me. I often feel like I'm still a little kid, searching for a best friend. I honestly don't know if I will ever have a relationship like that. I don't know if I'm capable of being that person for someone else. I AM AUTISTIC 🩷❤️🧡💛💚🩵💜 a few days ago i was diagnosed as autistic and i’m overwhelmed with feelings. i feel a sense of belonging, acceptance and understanding but i’m also grieving for my younger self who struggled so much as a result of being undiagnosed and wondering how different my life could have been (which is completely okay and valid!) although i am grieving in some ways and i feel like i will have to spend my life learning how to cope and heal from trauma… this is GOOD news. i’ve struggled with my mental health for over a decade and could never recover no matter how much therapy or medication i had, but it’s because my whole life i’ve been working against myself and my brain. self diagnosing as autistic and adhd before getting my diagnosis’ saved my life. it allowed me to start accepting and accommodating myself and begin unmasking. allowing myself to unmask has allowed me to become the colourful and joyful person i am now. i’m learning new things about myself every day and trying to do more things that bring me joy and make me feel like the truest version of myself without justifying or apologising for who i am or feeling embarrassed. i used to feel so much shame just for being / expressing myself because i was always told i’m “too different”, “too complex”, “too much”… but now i’m embracing myself and my differences. i’m not going to keep watering myself down or hiding. it’s silly to hide your joy! keep being bright and colourful and most importantly YOURSELF.🌈🫶🏻 #colourfulstyle #colourfulfashion #maximaliststyle #dopaminedressing #plussizeuk #colourfuloutfit #neurodivergent #adhd #autistic #autisticjoy #audhd #latediagnosedautistic

I hear a lot of people who were diagnosed with autism later in life say that they would have had an easier life if they were diagnosed earlier, and a lot of people who were diagnosed early in life say that early diagnosis made their lives hard. These people often have the same reasoning. They were bullied, misunderstood, mistreated, and traumatized. Autism is linked to many other conditions. Insomnia and sleep disorders, ADHD, eating disorders, gastrointestinal issues, ehlors danlos syndrome, epilepsy, and many others. One that might be less known is SCN2A. It's not always known why certain conditions cooccur with each other, but knowing your personal neurological profile more thoroughly can be empowering and make more resources available to you. Updates from my new car! So it’s an automatic which is new to me but I’ve been practicing in G’s car which has been helpful. It’s obviously lovely and smooth but the change is hard (classic) and I’m not used to it yet so it feels like I’m back to just passing and a nervous driver. I just can’t wait for a few months time when I’m really happy and comfortable with it - I do miss my little battered Peugeot but I know because of my pain I need a car I can rely on and the automatic helps reduce it! There are many things that are challenging about being Autistic when it comes to relationships or perceptions, but there are also SO MANY beautiful and wonderful things. I love my ability to see things realistically, my ability to be direct, my ability to create immersive pieces of writing, my ability to create groups for like minded people to delve into their passions, my ability to speak freely about the human experience in a way that isn’t guarded, and I could go on! But the feeling of autistic joy I ESPECIALLY love. [jouets préférés n°2 : rose et pastel rainbow] 💗 tangle original : tangle en anglais ça signifie s’entortiller, s’emmêler ; ça peut désigner toute sorte de fidget-toy qui s’enroule autour des doigts. C’est aussi le nom précis de ce machin de plastique qui est un des rares jouets où je recommande vraiment LA marque (@tanglecreations) et pas les contrefaçons, qui sont moins fluides, bloquent, se détachent ou cassent facilement. C’est en plastique oui, mais avec l’avantage de pouvoir être davantage lavé. 💗 tangle en bois : un de mes premiers vrais stimtoys, merci @math_lt pour cette merveilleuse découverte. J’ai envoyé tellement de gens (y compris ma psy) en acheter chez @the_grasshopper_brussels, je devrais toucher une commission à ce stade. J’en ai moi-même acheté là-bas près d’une dizaine, suivant l’évolution du prix depuis les 2,50€ jusqu’au 3,75€ actuels, pour en offrir à absolument tout le monde autour de moi (on en trouve aussi dans plein d’autres magasins de jouets, parfois à la caisse de librairies-papeteries, et même chez Nature et Découvertes). Mécanique simple : un élastique, des mini-cubes en bois fendus de deux côtés, des possibilités multiples, texture et bruit satisfaisant du bois, se plie et se range dans une poche. À jamais un de mes préférés pour occuper mes doigts. 💗 bout de corde : envoyé par mon ami @aariciawind – j’aime la texture, et inlassablement faire et défaire un nœud, ce que je faisais autrefois avec mes mèches de cheveux longs [il y aura un post dédié aux objets du quotidien détournés en stimtoys] 💗 des bulles ! Je ne pense pas souvent à faire des bulles, mais j’aime avoir mon petit tube rose fluo sur une étagère à côté d’autres objets assortis. (merci @camille.fatproject ) 💗 ressort-spirale multicolore : je ne joue pas souvent avec mais retrouver ce jouet qui m’avait marqué dans mon enfance m’avait emplie d’une joie intense. Autrefois, on lui faisait descendre des marches, aujourd’hui je m’amuse surtout à l’écarter et le resserrer comme un accordéon.
