This year marks the 100th anniversary of #TheWaltDisneyCompany, so let's get into some history. In 1921 #WaltDisney and #UbIwerks created the #animation company #LaughOGramStudio in Kansas City, MO where they created several short films, including the live action/animation hybrid, "Alice's Wonderland." Before the film was released, the studio went bankrupt and Walt and Ub moved to Hollywood to join Walt's brother #RoyODisney. Alice was picked up by Margaret Winkler, a distributor in New York, where it became a hit. Subsequently, Winkler contracted the Disneys to make six more #Alice Comedies." When Walt and Roy signed that contract on October 16th (my birthday), the #DisneyBrothersStudio was formed, a company that has now lasted over 100 years. In 1926, the Disney's built their Hyperion studio and officially changed the name of the company to #WaltDisneyStudio. The Hyperion studio was where classic characters like #OswaldTheLuckyRabbit, #MickeyMouse, #MinnieMouse, #Pluto, #Goofy and #DonaldDuck were born. Hyperion is also where #SnowWhite, the first full-length animated feature was created. With the success of snow white, Disney was able to commission the construction of the much bigger Disney studio complex in Burbank. As we know, Walt created his family fun park, #Disneyland, in 1955. After Walt's death in 1967, over the years parks were built in 5 more different cities across the world and the studio changed its name to The Walt Disney Company in 1986. In 1987, Disney cemented their place in retail by creating the first Disney Store in Glendale, CA. In all this time, #Disney has absorbed sports teams, broadcast channels, animation studios, film studios, and comic book publishers as well as built a series of hotels and a cruise line. One hundred years ago today, the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studio was founded. Its name has shifted and changed throughout the years and it became Walt Disney Studio just a few years later in 1926. But that doesn't change the fact that 1923 is the foundation of it all. Some folks have assumed – quite wrongly – that Disney 100 is a reference to the anniversary of Disneyland. No, it's the start of Walt and Roy Disney setting out on a business venture that would end up changing the entertainment industry (and the public conception of what cartoons could do) forever. Fig 1: Walt and Roy Disney, with their wives (Lillian and Edna) and their sister (Ruth) out in front of their new studio. Fig 3-4: The Alice Comedies, featuring Virginia Davis, were the first project at Disney Brothers. The first short film debuted on 16 October 1923, and it was made at the failing Laugh-O-Gram studios in Kansas. Walt then joined his brother in Los Angeles, having gone west on a one way ticket in July 1923. The Alice shorts, starting with Alice's Wonderland, showed the adventures of a real girl in an animated world and were quite the hit. Fig 5: Mickey Mouse wasn't the first animated mascot that Walt Disney created. Instead, that distinction belongs to Oswald the Lucky Rabbit, who was lost to issues with licensing and only reclaimed rather recently. #Disney100 / Wow, its been a century since two brothers started a little animation studio in Los Angeles (the building is still there, its now a Copy Shop ) and were pretty successful I think. ✨ Since I was 10 years old i wanted to be a disney animator, and its been a long road to get where i am, which couldn’t be possible without the support of my family, friends, and many mentors and peers. I started as an intern 12 years ago at disney consumer products, then got hired on full time as a character artist, took a break, now i’m back at disney tv animation. ✨ During my time with the mouse, i’ve had that the joy of contributing to countless projects and pushed my creative skills. To me, the art of Disney and the skill of all the artists and creatives who made animation magic is what has inspired me the most. ✨ I’m really grateful for the many doors that have been opened during my time here and all the awesome people i’ve met along the way. Happy happy happy 100 years Disney! Today marks the 100th anniversary of Disney and I can't wait to mark this day doing all things Disney in one of my favourite places, London! I'll be visiting the Disney 100 exhibition and definitely making a visit to the Disney Store as well as checking in online with all of the celebrations around the World! It's going to be great! The celebrations didn't start today though, I've been enjoying all of the 100th merchandise and content this year and had an amazing trip to the Walt Disney World Resort in Orlando, Florida! I loved visiting the parks and feeling the magic of Disney movies come to life around me. As many of us, I've enjoyed these movies since I was a child and still now as an adult. To be able to be immersed in these worlds at the parks is unbelievably fun and truly shows that Walt's idea of creating places for all ages to enjoy, relax and have fun still continues today! So here's a photo of us taken by a lovely Photopass photographer at the 100 sign at Hollywood Studios to celebrate all of the incredible movies we've enjoyed over the years, the imagineers that create these fantastic stories and spaces and all of the Cast Members that make the magic each day! Disney Brothers Studios: 1923-1926 Part 2 #daveiforniadisneyfacts You may remember back in November 2022, I visited the original Disney Brothers Studios on Kingswell Ave in Los Angeles. This time I went back and stepped foot into the shop that became their production area during Disney's time there. Now called Kingswell Skate Shop, the owner DJ, has kept the integrity of the shop from how it was when Walt and Roy owned the space 100 years ago from the exposed wooden beams to the original concrete flooring. It was great talking to DJ about Disney's past and what he knew of the shop and also what he has done with the space now with his skate shop! He also has a cast iron Mickey hanging on the beam that was a gift from his mom; the perfect piece of artwork for this space. And yes I even purchased a Kingswell Mickey Shirt on my visit as a souvenir of this time. The first space that Walt acquired was the space next door, now a copy company. This larger space (Kingswell Skate) was acquired by Walt shortly after when his company went from 6 staffers to 16 staffers all cramped in an 18ft x 30ft space. They even converted the original restroom into a part-time darkroom. So those early Alice Cartoons were exposed in a bathroom haha! Moving into this larger space allowed them to film, produce, and house more of the staff and equipment. DJ even pointed out 2 notch holes in the original beams that he believes were part of the filming back in the day! When Walt Disney left Kansas City in August of 1923 to head to Hollywood he had $40 dollars in his pocket, a suitcase, and a dream. For today’s stop on the Hollywood Pandemic Tour we’re visiting the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studios - the “first real location” of the Walt Disney Studios! Before moving to Hollywood, Walt Disney had made a cartoon about a little girl in a cartoon world, called Alice’s Wonderland, and he decided that he could use it as his “pilot” film to sell a series of these “Alice Comedies” to a distributor. Soon after arriving in California, he was successful. A distributor in New York, M. J. Winkler, contracted to distribute the Alice Comedies on October 16, 1923, and this date became the start of the Disney company. With a $500 loan from their uncle and their first check from Winkler Pictures, the brothers moved into their first studio in October 1923, in the back room of Mc Rae & Abernathy Holly-Vermont Reality at 4651 Kingswell Avenue. They paid $10 a month, for four months. In February of 1924, as money started to come in from the “Alice Comedies,” Walt was able to rent the next-door store at 4647 Kingswell Ave. to create the first true home of the Disney Brothers Cartoon Studios. During 1924, a total of ten Alice one-reel short films were created here on Kingswell Avenue. By 1926, the Disneys outgrew this space, renamed the company to “The Walt Disney Studios” and moved to their new location on Hyperion Avenue. They would generate thirty-one more Alice Comedies during the following two years until August of 1927. Today, the building that housed both original studios are home to “Kingswell“, a skate shop at 4651 Kingswell Avenue, and “Extra Copy” a print shop at 4647 Kingswell Avenue. Please note that these are real businesses so if you decide to visit this location please be respectful, do not trespass or disturb anyone that works there. 🎥 Walt Disney was born on December 5, 1901. Disney became one of the best-known motion picture producers in the world. He is particularly noted for being a film producer and a popular showman, as well as an innovator in animation and theme park design. Disney is famous for his contributions in the field of entertainment during the 20th century. His first success was through the series, Oswald the Lucky Rabbit which was created by the Disney studio for Charles Mintz of Universal Studios. When Disney asked for a larger budget for his popular Oswald series, Mintz refused and Disney had to quit. Later, Disney and his brother Roy O. Disney started from scratch and co-founded Walt Disney Productions, now known as The Walt Disney Company. Today, this company has annual revenues of approximately U.S. $35 billion. This succes is largely due to a number of the world's most famous fictional characters he and his staff created including Mickey Mouse, a character for which Disney himself was the original voice. Disney won 26 Academy Awards out of 59 nominations, including a record four in one year, giving him more awards and nominations than any other individual. He is also the namesake for Disneyland and Walt Disney World Resort theme parks in the United States, as well as the international resorts in Japan, France, and China. Disney died of lung cancer in Burbank, California, on December 15, 1966. The following year, construction began on Walt Disney World Resort in Florida.
