Super fun throwback to the OG horror novels. A group of college friends goes into the Florida sewers, investigating the rumors of alligators run amok. Little do they know the many secrets hiding in the pipes below, and that they’ll not all survive. This was ridiculously fun, though a bit of it in the beginning suffered from it being a product of its time. I’d still recommend it as a quick weekend read, and give it 4 stars!
Met een groep kampeerders die opgejaagd wordt is nooit iets mis, toch? HorrorNL bekijkt of dat ook het geval is in de volgende obscure slasher. The Final Terror werd in 1981 geschoten, maar bleef op de plank liggen. In 1983 kwam de film dan toch uit. Dat had vast iets te maken met de inmiddels rijzende sterren van onder meer Daryl Hannah, Rachel Ward, Adrian Zmed en Joe Pantoliano! Als museumstuk is The Final Terror dus al interessant vanwege het Hollywoodtalent dat erin rondloopt. Ook regisseur Andrew Davis heeft flink naam gemaakt. Zowel het acteer- als het regiewerk is echter verre van gedenkwaardig. De film oogt wat rommelig, de dialogen zijn soms houterig, alles is slecht belicht en de film wordt nergens echt eng. Toch is de film voor slashernerds wel aardig. De groep jonge kampeerders bevindt zich écht in een uitgestrekt bos (wat de slechte belichting verklaart) en The Final Terror vermijdt veel clichés die je bij alle andere werken uit deze periode op de bingokaart kunt afstrepen (op onder meer een kampvuurverhaal na dan). Voor echte terror moet je ergens anders zijn, maar blaas het stof gerust eens af van deze vergeten kampeerslasher. #filmreview It's 1980 Week! While it wouldn't be given a full release until 1982, the Indonesian Satanic/Supernatural horror film Satan's Slave would receive its first (limited) release on January 31, 1980. The plot follows a wealthy family that has lost faith and dabbles in sins such as workaholism, disco, horror films (and a touch of black magic). After the mother's death, the family is tormented by evil spirits. I'm not typically into the whole "religious propaganda" subgenre, but this one hit just right. It has a really trippy vibe—the result of some middling effects (all practical, of course) combined with excellent Hammer-eseque cinematography and a super creepy, disharmonic score. It's often compared to Phantasm, and it's hard not to, as it definitely borrows a bit, but it really is kind of its own thing. FFO of OG Evil Dead, Phantasm, and anyone who wants a different (non-Christian) slice of Exorcistploitation/Satanic Panic insanity. This one was, of course, remade in 2017 by Joko Anwar (who also did the fantastic Impetigore). Last Easter, I had a post to do with an exploitative monster sci-fi horror flick from the early eighties called The Being and this Easter, here's a post of the second Critters film, the directorial debut film by Mick Garris (who also does the voice of the Critters in this film and he later on directed Sleepwalkers, with him being known for his work on Stephen King adaptations) and featuring the reprising roles of Scott Grimes (who also does the voice of Steve Smith in American Dad), Terrance Mann (who I always think looks a bit like Hugh Laurie) and scream queen Lin Shaye (who has been in tons of films, including the OG 1984 A Nightmare On Elm Street, Wes Craven's New Nightmare and the Insidious films, as well as Detroit Rock City, There's Something About Mary and many more). Never checked out any of these films until around last Easter, even though I previously saw a tiny bit of the third one as a kid (AKA the one with Leonardo DiCaprio, which was his debut film role) on the Horror Channel and with how I had the DVD boxset a little while prior to that as well. This is one of the more gorier entries in the franchise alongside the fifth one, Critters Attack! (which is the only Critters film that I haven’t seen), despite how the second film was originally rated 15 in the UK until it was re-rated 12 for the DVD release in the mid-noughties (same thing occurred to the first one here in the UK as well, initially rated 15 when it first came out until it was re-rated 12 on DVD). The third one is rated 12, and the fourth and fifth Critters films are rated 15. In America, the first four are PG-13 but the fifth one is rated R. The second film has splatter as a secondary genre of the film section of Rate Your Music, the only one in the franchise to have that genre vote as well on RYM. I even watched the first four films (just prior to the Kill Count videos on Dead Meat - which were hosted by Zoran Gjovic instead of James A. Konijnen, communisten, een steengroeve. Niet bepaald de standaardingrediënten van een horrorfilm. Toch zijn deze niet weg te denken uit Celia (1989). De Australische Ann Turner creëerde deze film, die je met enige twijfel een psychologische horrorfilm kunt noemen (maar ook in het schap van sociaal drama en coming-of-age zou kunnen staan). In elk geval zitten er in Celia verontrustende thema’s verwerkt. Om te beginnen de rouw die het negenjarige meisje (knap gespeeld door Rebecca Smart) met zich meedraagt nadat ze haar oma dood heeft aangetroffen. Daarnaast angst voor anderen: in dit geval voor de communisten in het Australië van 1957. Dat heeft tot gevolg dat haar geliefde buren moeten verhuizen. Ook de bijzondere band met dieren en de kwetsbaarheid die dat met zich meebrengt. Je vraagt je continu af hoe het met Celia’s geliefde konijn zal aflopen. De strijd tegen deze knaagdieren die Australië indertijd bezighield komt natuurlijk ook langs. Al is dit evengoed een metafoor voor die tegen de ‘rooien’. Het meisje Celia is duidelijk getekend door meerdere trauma’s, alle veroorzaakt door volwassenen. Daarin zit de echte horror. En het verklaart die nare visioenen van een blauw slijmerig monster. Dat kan alleen maar vervelend aflopen, zou je denken. Dat maakt het alleen al de moeite om deze obscure Australische horror te bekijken. Premier long métrage de Zelda Williams , fille du célèbre Robin Williams , Lisa Frankenstein est une comédie horrifique assez sympathique à regarder sans être culte . Nous suivons ici Lisa , une jeune fille souvent mise de côté de par son passé va sans le savoir réanimer un cadavre qui va lui faire changer sa vision du monde . Nous avons ici une comédie légèrement gore très appuyé sur les années 80 que ce soit dans ces magnifiques couleurs , sa musique et ses tenues superbes. Les clins doeils aux films d'époque sont souvent présent et font toujours plaisir à voir pour nous amateurs d'horreur. L'histoire d'amour qui va se créer entre les 2 personnages principaux est assez intéressante à suivre mais malheureusement un peu molle en terme de rythme et à mes yeux pas assez décalé et folle . C'est vraiment ce qui manque à ce film c'est un degré de folie plus fort pour en faire une comédie horrifique et romantique attachante . Alors oui l'actrice qui incarne Lisa que l'on a pu voir dans le bon Freaky est attachante et son histoire sera tout de même un plaisir à suivre mais ne marquera pas les esprits . On retrouvera évidemment des personnages clichés américains de cette époque là qui ne sont pas dérangeants. As it was St. Patrick's Day today (or as I like to be funny AF by calling it "St. Krabby Patties Day", a SpongeBob reference), last St. Paddy's Day had me having a post of the 1976 film God Told Me To and this time, here's another SPD horror flick, the 1988 crime mystery action slasher flick Maniac Cop, starring Tom Atkins, Richard Roundtree (the Shaft guy, who passed away almost five months ago a couple of days after my birthday) and Ash Williams himself, Bruce Campbell. Since I already mentioned Bruce Campbell starring in this film, Sam Raimi has an uncredited cameo appearance as the reporter of the St. Paddy's Day parade scene later on in the film. Was looking through the comment section box for the genre voting section for this film on the film section of Rate Your Music and I saw somebody mentioning how the Maniac Cop himself Matthew Cordell was a brain damaged psycho killer rather than a vigilante, who was revenge killing and killing innocent people, hence how the film is labelled as a revenge film instead of a vigilante on the categories section on Wikipedia. He isn't any more of a vigilante than Pamela Voorhees in the original 1980 Friday The 13th film. If we're talking about Bruce Campbell's character, he was already a cop and just trying to continue being a cop, whilst being framed, so you can't call him or any other actual cop a vigilante either. It wasn't confirmed in this movie that he was supernatural, so you can’t really label the film as a supernatural horror film because the audience wasn't aware of it at the time until the sequels came out. The audience wasn't told or even alluded to why he could take so many shots. This movie made it seem that he was just big, tough, possibly wearing armour (like a bulletproof vest or something like that) and not dead or that it was simply unexplained. L'aspect horrifique est assez secondaire ici même si le sujet du vampire est important mais en tant que comédie cela fonctionne plutôt bien et cela grâce à un Jim Carrey déjà au top au début de sa carrière avec ses imitations et ses mimiques que l'on aimera de plus en plus au fil des années. Le film en lui même se regarde bien mais n'est jamais hilarant et plutôt mollasson. A noter quelques scènes de rêves et celle du bal d'halloween vraiment top visuellement . Ouijaborden beloven in griezelfilms zelden iets goeds, zo zagen we afgelopen decennium in beide Ouijafilms. Ook in 1986 was dit al zo… In Witchboard loopt een ouijasessie uit de hand, als de geest van het jongetje David wordt opgeroepen. Linda (Tawny Kitaen) blijft hem hierna maar oproepen. Ondertussen begint hij steeds meer grip op haar te krijgen? Maar is David werkelijk zo slecht? Dat proberen Linda’s vriend en ex-vriend uit te zoeken. Dat hun vriendschap nogal wat schade heeft opgelopen, wordt in enkele scènes - a-typisch voor horror in de jaren 80 - knap uiteengezet. Gelukkig wordt dit afgewisseld met een heleboel slechte oneliners, over-de-topmoordscènes en een hysterisch medium genoemd Zarabeth. Je zit in de jaren 80 of niet. Wel is Witchboard een onderscheidende film, vanwege de menselijke verhoudingen, het originele camerawerk en de diepgang die is aangebracht. Scalps sorti en 1983 et distribué en France par uncutmovies est un film assez moyen que j'ai pourtant hésité à acheter depuis plusieurs années à cause de sa magnifique affiche. Malheureusement passé l'affiche le film est bien plat avec une première heure longue et redondante ou l'on suit de jeune archéologues envoyés par leurs profs pour déterrer des ossements indiens . Par chance sa dernière demi heure se sort les doigts et nous propose un peu de scènes trash assez sympas . Pour ce qui est du jeu d'acteur malheureusement on repassera mis à part le personne de D.J. qui s'en sort mieux . Si cela ne suffisait pas nous avons une bande son assez moyenne , des scènes mal coupées et une qualité d'image vraiment pas avantageuse. 6/10 My Bloody Valentine Film by George Mihalka Twenty years after a tragic mining accident taking place during a Valentine's Day dance, a Miner re-emerges to kill and punish those celebrating Valentine's Day. Got some pure unadulterated 80s camp slasher fun here with the original My Bloody Valentine's flick from 1981. It's something of a classic within the horror community without a lot of pulp and grandeur. It's cold open is something gratuitous, leads into an intro of too many characters to remember. But sufficiently prepares for the offing to come. The performances are perfectly of the times, heightened and silly. It's near enough a self aware comedy horror. Gore is little really, which is a shame considering set up. Love the element of the local urban legend haunting the town. It's a great reverse Jaws moment for the mayor to do the right thing right away. Good move. There are a ton of interactions that go over my head, who are these people? But it's fine, lots of killing comes for them. Got a ton of 80s style horror, POV, slash, false jump scare. Terrible ideas lead young characters inevitable destruction, after the Harbinger does a great performance trying to warn. Design is damn well designed, especially the kill sequences. Great kills all round, though disguised and offscreen. Use of Valentine's choc boxes are my favourite. Almost makes me believe the Miner should get more respect on the horror landscape. Side plots mean way less to me than the main killing ground, but gotta have some wrapper to go around the choc, I guess. Far too much jumping around tbh. The last half hour is the pinnacle bit a bit repetitive and lacking in gore. It's silly, and campy, and eighties, takes a bit long to get into it. But it's everything you could want on a Valentine's night alone or with your special horrific someone. A classic that lead to a damn decent remake. Er is een moment waarop Jason Voorhees niet meer wegkwam met zijn reguliere bezigheden rondom Crystal Lake. In het zevende deel is men al even dolende, en dat levert een wisselend resultaat op. Friday the 13th Part VII: The New Blood is wellicht een wat vreemde naam voor deze film, om twee redenen. Ten eerste was het de bedoeling dat hoofdpersonage Tina hierna terug zou keren, maar het bleef bij één schamele film.Ten tweede is er nauwelijks bloed te zien, dus zou ‘No Blood’ beter hebben gepast. Het was in 1988 al de bedoeling dat Jason de degens met Freddy Krueger zou kruisen. Rechtentechnisch kwam dit niet rond, dus moesten fans daarop wachten tot 2003. Ook het idee om Carrie binnen te halen is niet van de grond gekomen. Maar een telekinetische jongedame, die zit er toch in. Tina brengt Jason per ongeluk tot leven, terwijl ze eigenlijk haar vader wilde defibrilleren, die net als de moordenaar op de bodem van het meer zijn laatste rustplaats gevonden had. Tina is daar om therapie te krijgen van wellicht de meest onethische therapeut in de filmgeschiedenis. Haar moeder is ook van de partij. Handig genoeg vindt er in het belendende huisje een feest plaats waar tien jongeren als slachtvee kunnen dienen. Aan moorden inderdaad geen gebrek. Het lullige is alleen dat de filmkeuring zo kritisch was, dat alle leuke kills vroeg afgekapt worden. Dat levert de braafste Friday in de reeks op. Toch blijft het heerlijk om Jason door de bossen te zien sluipen, en zijn voorkomen mét - en zonder! - masker is indrukwekkend, met dank aan de debuterende Kane Hodder. Slasher de 1986 avec une superbe affiche mais pour le reste et bien .. Le scénario assez basique nous fait suivre des étudiants en médecine qui aident un ami à réparer un logement ou un drame à eu lieu quelques années auparavant . Étant un grand fan de ce genre de film je dois dire que celui ci m'a vendu du rêve avec son affiche mais il est malheureusement très moyen . Entre ces meurtres en hors champ la plupart du temps (mis à part quelques giclée de sang ) , ces scènes erotiques inexistantes, un tueur à la voix assez exotique et des acteurs qui prennent le film un peu trop au sérieux alors que les textes sont dignes d'un pur nanar c'est très dur d'apprécier le film qui semble interminable . Slasher surnaturel sorti en 1989 et qui nous viens tout droit du Mexique et ce sera donc le premier film de cette année 2024 que je vous proposerais . Vous le savez j'aime beaucoup les slashers et celui ci m'a plutôt plu dans sa globalité. Nous suivons ici de jeunes pilleurs de tombes qui vont par mégarde réveiller un tueur satanique qui veut donner naissance à L'antéchrist. Gore et meurtre vraiment top seront au rendez vous ainsi qu'un tueur que l'on ne verra vraiment qu'à la fin qui a un très bon rendu maquillage a l'écran. L'écriture du film n'est pas toujours parfaite et quelques incohérences légères seront présentes ( après nous sommes dans un slasher et évidemment tout les personnages n'ont pas la lumière à tout les étages) mais le film se suit sans ennui et c'est déjà beaucoup.
