6/10 My Bloody Valentine Film by George Mihalka Twenty years after a tragic mining accident taking place during a Valentine's Day dance, a Miner re-emerges to kill and punish those celebrating Valentine's Day. Got some pure unadulterated 80s camp slasher fun here with the original My Bloody Valentine's flick from 1981. It's something of a classic within the horror community without a lot of pulp and grandeur. It's cold open is something gratuitous, leads into an intro of too many characters to remember. But sufficiently prepares for the offing to come. The performances are perfectly of the times, heightened and silly. It's near enough a self aware comedy horror. Gore is little really, which is a shame considering set up. Love the element of the local urban legend haunting the town. It's a great reverse Jaws moment for the mayor to do the right thing right away. Good move. There are a ton of interactions that go over my head, who are these people? But it's fine, lots of killing comes for them. Got a ton of 80s style horror, POV, slash, false jump scare. Terrible ideas lead young characters inevitable destruction, after the Harbinger does a great performance trying to warn. Design is damn well designed, especially the kill sequences. Great kills all round, though disguised and offscreen. Use of Valentine's choc boxes are my favourite. Almost makes me believe the Miner should get more respect on the horror landscape. Side plots mean way less to me than the main killing ground, but gotta have some wrapper to go around the choc, I guess. Far too much jumping around tbh. The last half hour is the pinnacle bit a bit repetitive and lacking in gore. It's silly, and campy, and eighties, takes a bit long to get into it. But it's everything you could want on a Valentine's night alone or with your special horrific someone. A classic that lead to a damn decent remake. An American Crime (2007) starring Elliot Page, Catherine Keener, and Hayley McFarland among others. Directed by Tommy O’Haver. So technically I was supposed to post this yesterday for #31daysofspookymovieschallenge with the promt ‘horror based on true events’ hosted by @pop.goesthemovie & @darrenmoviereviews This horror is more like a drama/horror but it is horrifying nonetheless. Still classified as a horror as well as being a true story. The tragic story of Sylvia Likens, who was brutally tortured and eventually died in the basement of her caretakers home. Sylvia and Jenny were staying with Gertrude and her 6 children only a few months to help out the family during a rough patch. This took place during the 60’s when it was fairly common for people to take in others kids and things were much more lax. Neighbors and society in general were of the mindset to “mind your own business” “better to not get involved”. This complicit behavior resulted in and still continues to result in tragic consequences. There is another film quite like this that claims it’s not based on this story and it’s a full on horror called “The Girl Next Door”, but the story is somewhat changed and it does not have the facts of this heartbreaking and terrifying real tragedy. The performance from Catherine Keener is so good because she plays this horrible person so well! Elliot page did justice to Sylvia portraying an innocent young teen who was targeted by a mentally ill woman. Have you seen this one? . . . . . . . . . . . #anamericancrime #dramahorror #basedontruestory #elliotpage #catherinekeener #hayleymcfarland #tommyohaver #horrifying #crimemovie #basedontrueevents #truecrime #moviestowatch #recommendation #movielovers #movienight #moviecommunity

Nanny (2022) starring Anna Diop, Michelle Monaghan, and Sinqua Walls among others. Written and directed by Nikyatu Jusu. This dark horror drama really got to me on first view. Stuck with me for a while, and on rewatch it is just as haunting. I would barely classify this as horror. It’s more of a mood piece in the way of horror, and much more a slow burn dark drama that is quite heartbreaking. This film gives supernatural vibes at times with great cinematography, but it’s very subtle. Overall a great film, underrated and under seen in my opinion. If you like slow burn drama give it a chance! 7/10 Mother! Film by Darren Aronofsky A young woman who has been working to expertly restore her writer husbands decimated home, feels the chagrin of uninvited guests and intruders to their tranquil lives. Things get out of hand when she inspires his writings to new levels of fame and the whole world comes looking for them. Darren Aronofsky's symbolistic home bound drama mystery horror. Bit of a roller coaster for a single location small caster. One big metaphor. Being familiar with biblical stories, I was able to pick up on (all I think) the symbolisms quickly enough, that ended up being what I enjoyed most. Fairly enough the comparisons were not subtle but I thought were clever and well built, particularly the escalation towards the end. High production quality, great cinematography, beautiful setting. Some digital effects aren't the most convincing. Performances are nuanced and utterly brilliant, serving the plot and metaphor to perfection. To be honest I've never been the biggest fan of Jennifer Lawrence as an actor, everyone has those actors they don't believe or don't enjoy watching, with the greatest respect, Jennifer Lawrence is one of mine. Have now seen her in a couple of horror roles and haven't been so convinced or intrigued. Having said that, she has a world on the shoulders to play here and has great moments of dealing with devastating unfairness. This isn't a typical horror by any means but does follow tropes such as jump scares, unpredictable behaviours, suspense sequences, some eventual gore and kills etc. It has some wonderful qualities. Definitely allows a huge amount of frustration feelings for Mother character and what she has to deal with. Has the worst hand dealt out of any character. It took a while to get into this (quite long) flick but by the end I was fully engaged. Not a great horrific film but a bit of an epic and clever symbolic story. Unique is a good descriptor here. Did not hate this. 8/10 Midsommar Film by Ari Aster After suffering the most tremendous loss Dani accompanies boyfriend Christian and his friends on a cultural exploration of Sweden. While living amongst a community there, they are introduced to traditional customs, all steeped in cultural significance and belief but not all survivable. Infamous Ari Aster travel drama horror! This is a big one, a lot. Seen a couple of times. Going to put it out, I'm in the minority but not the biggest fan of this beloved daytime horror story. Not hate. Overall the shock value is overstated/over-relied on, find this distracting. But I do concede there is a ton to love here, so. High production value! Insanely clever camera uses, reflections, transitions and scene constructions. Much subtext is added with camera. Design is spectacular. Always love a flick that gives you the full detail or vital clue right to your face in a clever way in the first frame. Let's be honest, gaslighting, emotional manipulation and passive aggression are all awful especially to see from the outside in a relationship you care about, that's one of the horrors here, and it's dread filling. Ari Aster may be THE master of dread horror, there is no fun feeling watching his stories. It's just suffering. Spectacular sights but pain. Have to lord Jack Reynor's performance as Christian, perfectly portraying the worst kind of 'supportive' boyfriend, harbouring deep unearned resentment. But of course it's all about Florence Pugh's incredible vastly suffering Dani! Her performance is the gem here. Everyone's great really. It's a tad long, beautiful, tightly written yet dragging. Slow build to where it goes. Love to learn about traditions and things. Gore is well done but feels like gross for the sake of gross. They do drug trips great, I felt the anxiety of a bad one. Incredible film of course but as I say it's not my full cup of tea. It is of epic proportions. Definitely worth a viewing for anyone not seen. Normal Women by Anslie Hogarth Horror - Mystery - Dark Humour Pub date: October 10 Spoiler free ARC review “…darkly comic story about how we value female labor -and don’t…” New mom Dani is struggling to find her place in her marriage as a stay-at-home parent. When her mysterious new bestie goes missing (along with a possible new seedy side hustle), she finds herself in a paranoid gumshoe frenzy. Hogarth blew me away with her debut horror novel MOTHERTHING (it’s currently my 2023 fav). The same snarky humour shines through in Normal Women and her dramatic characters are fantastic (I straight up hated the husband though 😡). It’s a ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ for me! Thanks to @vintageanchorbooks and #NetGalley for this arc opportunity. I’m also really looking forward to the audiobook 🎧 #normalwomen #ansliehogarth #horrorreader #horrormystery #dramahorror #arcread #photoroom #funwithbooks #ebookreader #vanlifereader

7/10 Men Film by Alex Garland After the traumatic death of her husband whom she was soon to be divorced from, Harper retreats to a beautiful countryside house for time of healing. Soon after arriving she is stalked and harassed by locals all baring the same face. Wow, just wow. An excellent example of a highly existential symbolic horror portrait. From horror director Alex Garland! Its the height of both beautiful and challenging. I can't claim to have gotten all of the symbolism, what the story was about, what the monster was, or what was 'real'. Must confess I think it was a little above my head. Can't tell if I fully like it, maybe an audience doesn't have to. However, it definitely evoked a lot of feelings and imagery for me. And reading the trivia on the Greenman after the watch was satisfying. And I can't ever say it wasn't engaged from start to finish. I can say I understand the mixed reviews. The locations and cinematography are stunning to look at. It's really a slow burn, maybe too slow. Performances were phenomenal. Jessie Buckley, whom I'm fast becoming a massive fan of, is glorious in the lead role. Has a mastery of the inquisitive expression. And Rory Kinnear definitely got to display vast range, playing many multiple roles. An incredible actor in both comedic and dramatic! The style felt like nightmare logic. Laid out just like being trapped within a nightmare while fully aware you're dreaming. A full drug trip. Usually don't like jumping between past and present but it was well played here. Was not a scare or gore fest for a time but wondered spectacularly into fear and just grossness! Imagery that will stay with you for weeks to come. Some great suspense and horror tropes. Ending was a bit abrupt and somewhat unsatisfying. Think people who have been emotionally manipulated in relationships will relate to this one. Going to reflect further on how I feel about Men. It's a thinker, an intellectual thinker. My sister and I watched Insidious The Red Door yesterday. I thought this movie was entertaining but nothing spectacular that made me go wow. If you like drama thrillers I think you will like this. If your expecting tons of horror then I’m not sure if your going to be that into this movie because it is a bit slow. I thought the demon in the movie looked great and this movie went great along with one and two. It’s a great ending to the story of the franchise. It feels like a good ending to the franchise I know and love. I enjoy movies with college settings to them so I did really like that about this movie. Is this movie worth buying for $25.00 on digital I would say no and just wait til it’s cheaper and rent it. I was expecting more with this movie. I don’t get scared by movies but to me this movie wasn’t scary. My sister jumped from one jump scare but that was it. I didn’t jump from anything from this movie but I usually never jump from jump scares. I love that they brought back the original cast for this movie because it made it a lot more interesting than the last two movies in the Insidious franchise. Overall this movie was fine and I wanted more horror. My rating: 7/10 My sisters rating: 7.5/10 #insidiousthereddoor #dramahorror #movies

7/10 The House That Jack Built Film by Lars von Trier Psychopathic serial killer Jack, aka-ed as Mr Sophistication, outlines incidents and "works of art" over twelve years of killings and creations, to Verge. An artistic crime horror built around a conversation between psychopathic Jack and a largely unseen supposed ferryman Verge. Very interesting unique take on basically a serial killer movie. Extremely brutal, visual, mercilessly gory kills and visuals. This is more than most other horrors I've seen, a pure portrait of evil. All surrounds art, engineering, architecture, philosophy, moral idealism, history, nihilism and of course the character of Jack. Fascinating character. If you close your eyes, you could hear Josh Brolin's Thanos speaking throughout. Matt Dillon's portrayal is masterful though somewhat monotonous, probably needed to be. The flick is fascinating and engaging but long, and accesses the feeling of nihilism to a large degree. Most liked the exploration of indifference and failure from the powers we see as defence of innocence, some inspired by real events! It's not a whole lot of fun, far flung from the laughs of your silly campy 80s slasher. This is a splash of cold water in the face of an evening's horror viewing. It's all quite artistic with constant handheld close ups, realism based performances, and stock photo and animated illustrations for voice over debate portions. Like a sick twisted mockumentary style. SPOILER It's quite a huge relief when it all starts falling apart for this evil somebitch. Even gets damn Dante and Faustian before the finish. FINAL SPOILER He does end up building a house, and what a grotesque house it is too. Overall: interesting flick, not sorry to have watched, but the controversy of it all is clear as glass to me. One stop shop for fans of deep thinking and sporadic brutal gore. 8/10 The Sixth Sense Film by M. Night Shyamalan A year after an attack by a former patient, child psychologist Malcolm Crowe begins treating Cole Sear, a young boy whom he sees the same symptoms in. Through their sessions he comes to realise Cole has disturbed hallucinations of seeing ghosts of the dead. Though treatment may be off when his hallucinations are not so imagined but real connections to the unsatisfied dead. An absolute classic iconic flick tonight, and what I'd call M. Night Shyamalan's greatest masterpiece, certainly the one that put him on the map. It's amazingly crafted, uniquely shot. Takes a little while to get to the horrific portions, even then they're quite mild. Probably more accurate to call a thriller with strong sporadic horror elements. Never really steps over to completely terrifying. But some of the jump scares are epic, though an overreliance on jump scare SFX. Suspense helped along always with foreboding score. Plot is a slow burn and includes famously one of the most iconic twists in cinema history. I would LOVE to have known what it felt like to watch without knowing it beforehand. Unfortunately I knew long before my first watch, which was many moons ago. But I wonder if I would have guessed it. It's got also some of the most brutal resonating humanity moments. It really feels like a series of therapy sessions on the path to true mental health. Handheld shots really making us feel like unseen onlookers within the story. Cinematic and darkly beautiful. Some absolutely astonishing performances, especially from a young Haley Joel Osment, completely get why he was cast. Lots of the other child actors were great too. Bruce Willis is iconic again. Made me think of him today, hope he's happy in his current life, despite condition. The finish is only sweet, not very horror, for shame. Yeah, an insanely cool movies for many reasons, but maybe one of the least scary horrors. Recommend a watch if you haven't before. 7/10 What Lies Beneath Film by Robert Zemeckis Claire and husband Norman settle into their new life after sending their daughter off to college. Claire begins seeing the spectre of a young women in reflections around their home. Believing it to be the spirit of her murdered neighbour, until certain revelations rise to the surface, then it becomes clear there are hidden secrets in their past and a vengeful spirit coming straight for them. Rather engaging slow burn ghost horror thriller mystery from the beginning of the century, starring Michelle Pfeiffer and Harrison Ford. Really had strong solid elements about it. Though the plot was a little convoluted, went longer than it needed to, it was engaging the whole way through and got to where it was going by the end. They really did ghost horror right, top constructed suspense and so many amazing jump scares, even when they were televised from miles away, they got me just the same mostly. Pretty clear inspiration from the works of Alfred Hitchcock, in style, tone, actions and even down to some of the music styles. Some of the camera tricks and angles were just so wow. I actually said "wow" at times. Haven't seen Harrison Ford play a character like this before, bit of a unique one for him, he was brilliant but I can see he's smart to steer clear of them in his overall career. Trivia: it's actually his only horror flick. Michelle Pfeiffer is brilliant always, 'nough said. Some story beats didn't seem relevant or worth the time, like their daughter's existence, could have told a more compelling story in three quarters of the time. Some horror shots and ghost sightings were spectacular. I truly got scared in portions, bit rare nowadays. Great foreshadowing set ups, though I clocked every one of them. Strange CGI let it down in places. Yeah I'm sold, this was a great ghost horror drama from a bygone era of filmmaking. Recommend a watch if in the mood for old-school supernatural mystery horror. The House That Jack Built is a 2018 Psychological Horror Art film ⚠️ there is a clip of young jack cutting the leg off a baby duck, child deaths, seriously it's bad depending in the version you watch, blood, some gore, abuse. Failed architect Jack to Virgil aka Verge talks about how he became a serial killer as they make their way through the ninth circle of hell; Dante's Inferno. 1st Incident: Jack encountered a woman, Lady 1 on the sofa of the road. She asks for a lift. She is very persistent and abrasive. She insults Jack and irritates him saying he looks like a serial killer then says he won't do a thing to her. He does take his tire jack and hits her in the face and storing her body in an industrial freezer. 2nd Imcident: Jack pretends to be a cop to get Claire's trust to gain entry in her home. When he does enter her home, he strangles her a few times before he finally kills her with a stab to the chest. Instead of just leaving the crime scene, his OCD compels him to come back to clean up his mess multiple times. He wraps up Clair and puts her in the back of his van. When the cops pull up to speak with Jack about a break in, he takes the time to drag her out and leaves her in the bushes. He ties her body to the back of his van and drives off, leaving a massive blood trail. Lucky for him, the rain washes away the blood. Before we get to the next part, a clip of young jack cutting the leg off a baby duck is show, and I mean you see it. Jack ends up strangling a woman and carrying her body to the freezer. He does this with a few more people. And has a few photoshoots with some bodies. 3rd Incident: Jack brings his girlfriend and her two boys, Grumpy and George on a hunting trip. He shoots the boys with his rifle and makes their mom have a picnic with them. She's eventually shot by Jack. He also makes Grumpy's face form a gruesome smile. 4th Incident: Jack and Jacqueline have a very dysfunctional relationship, he abuses her verbally Jack admits to being a killer in front of acqueline and a cop but since they're both been drinking, the cop just brushes It off and leaves.

Newest edition to the @screamfactoryofficial collectors edition shelf. We have Richard Loncraine’s . The Haunting of Julia aka Full Circle . I’ve never seen this and frankly had never heard of it. This was a complete blind buy for me. A few people have told me some good things so I’m excited to check it out. I tend to dig stuff from the 70’s. . What’s everyone watching? . #thehauntingofjulia #dramahorror #screamfactory #screamfactorycollection #4kuhd #4kuhdbluray #4kuhdcollection #4kmovies #4kcollection #4kcollector #horror #horrormovies #horrorcollector #horrorcollection #horrorpage #instahorror #horrormovie #newrelease #horrorbuff #horrorgram #movies #moviecollectors #moviecollection #moviecollector #moviegram #movieshelf #shelfie #cinephile #physicalmedia #physicalmediacollector

This is a very stylised Korean film. I wouldn't go into this thinking it is a full on horror film. It's more of an drama that builds up tension really l well. It's definitely not going to be for everyone as I said don't expect it to be your typical American horror film. #auditionfilm #koreanmovie #dramahorror #amazonprime

8/10 The Midnight Club Series by Mike Flanagan and Leah Fong After seventeen year old Ilonka learns of her terminal condition, she researches and discovers a hospice with a mysterious history. She's accepted as a resident, finding the facility full of young people just like her, dealing with their own terminal conditions. She discovers also a club that meets in secret at midnight in the library, telling scary stories to fright and delight. She has a new home, and new family while on the trail of the secrets that brought her here and a way to save everyone she loves. Recent new horror series from Mike Flanagan and team based on the writings of Christopher Pike. As with everything I've seen of Mike Flanagan work, this is no exception: an engaging, well-written, amazingly performed, cinematic, fright-filled spectacular good watch! It's not even close to my favourite of his works but I love it. Having not read its source novel I'm not sure how much liberty was taken but I do know many Pike stories are included, told by characters as they share their stories at midnight. Combination of amazing writing and incredible performances by young cast make it perfectly watchable throughout. Some of the effects and character relationships were a bit corny which placed this more in the realm of horror for young adults, nothing wrong with that. Actors got the chance to display range acting as characters within stories also. Loved the mix of subgenres and styles used within the spooky stories. There is expert suspense and record setting jump scares within. Also due to the material, it's naturally high drama and very deep thoughts on dealing with death and mortality. Many WARNINGS are given in ratings advice. But there is love and good humour. Great series, that I have subsequently learnt has been cancelled. Has left us on so many loose ends and one huge cliffhanger. So I'm adding this: #bringbackthemidnightclub. For I would watch much much more of this stuff here! "Scenes that make you hurt, or cringe, or turn away from the screen when watching are scenes designed to make you feel, for ten seconds at least, the most human." - Florence Pugh . . For me, this is one of the most painful movie moments to watch.
