🌿🐘 Breathtaking encounter with a majestic elephant, deep in the heart of Ragati. Notice how its ears and its trunk raised, signaling a clear warning of aggression. Mchumba & Impi - African Elephants, Howletts 🐘📸 These two young bull elephants used to have special ‘bull days’ with the older breeding male so they could learn from him, and so the rest of the herd could have a break from their antics. This picture shows a cool submissive behaviour where Mchumba is investigating Impi’s mouth with his trunk, like they would do to their mothers when they were calves 💚 • • • • #elephants #africanelephants #howletts #elephantbehaviour #animals #animalphotography #conservation

These tiny young elephant calves are now recovering at the Elephant Nursery in Lusaka National Park after they were separated from their mothers in a large-scale human-elephant conflict incident on the Zambia-Malawi boarder. Follow the link in the bio for full details in our blog. The arrival of orphans ‘Kasungu’ and ‘Lumezi’ brings the herd up to 8 young elephants being cared for around-the-clock at the Nursery – the most we have ever had, so we need your support now more than ever. Please help us to help them by donating, find link in the bio. Early this week a herd of 50+ elephants entered Lumezi community, on the Malawi border, causing considerable damage to crops. Tragically as the elephants were chased away three young calves were separated from their family. Thankfully one calf was able to be reunited with its herd, but sadly the two calves found later on were unable to be reunited. Due to their very young age and vulnerability GRI was called to support them and yesterday our team travelled to provide primary stabilization before transporting them to the Lusaka Elephant Nursery. #WeAreAllRangers #elephants #elephantrescue #elephantorphans #elephantbabies #elephantlovers #elephantcalves #elephantbehaviour #savetheelephant

With the rain comes life, new grasses and sprouts 🌱 over ground, colour appears on trees and flowers suddenly appear. There are also 🐞, glorious bugs everywhere, annoying when they fly down you too or crawl up your shorts, but amazing to stop and admire. Now’s the time to spot energetic tortoises too, I saw 3 in a short stretch of road yesterday. As for the elephants 🐘 there are fewer around these days, they have less need to come to the pans- they are out there wandering enjoying the fresh vegetation and drop in temperatures- go well grey friends. . . . . #tortoise #research #elephants #botswana #freshgrass #postraincolour #postrainlife #bugs #critters #bettles #researcher #femalefounders #elephantsofinstagram #researchers #researchanddevelopment #funders #botswana🇧🇼 #researching #womeninscience #women #conservation #fieldwork #elephantbehaviour #fieldbiologist #fieldbiologistlife #womeninstem #elephantbiologist #behaviouralecologist #escapingtheoffice

HOT OFF THE PRESS! Our new publication titled “Twisting collars on male elephants in shrub terrain: animal welfare considerations for researchers, managers and manufacturers” has been published in Volume 24 of Pachyderm. This paper explores a rare phenomenon we encountered of elephant tracking collars twisting on bull elephants in dense shrub terrain in South Africa. This is the first publication out from BTEH researcher Brooke Friswold’s PhD and carries significance in exploring, understanding and improving elephant tracking and research methods. It is critical as researchers that we share our experiences and challenges in research so that we can continue to improve elephant wellbeing in research and management scenarios. You can check out the paper through the link in our bio. @thewildlifelady #elephantresearch #elephantresearcher #elephanttracking #elephantbehaviour #conservationmanagement #conservationresearch

After looking at the sequence of photos that included these three, it appears what photo 1 captured was an elephant in the midst of a dust devil. You see the same elephant walking into the dust devil a few moments earlier in photo 2. Photo 3 captures the same elephant dust bathing itself and helps us see the difference with photo 1. If you dust bathe yourself, then of course it makes sense getting a free dusting from a devil. #elephant #africanelephant #elephantbehaviour #africananimals #wildlifephotography #naturephotography

Sri chan and Thiwan 🩶 Sri chan has been a part Thiwan’s family since before he was born, and he has been her mahout for 28 years, starting from his teenage years. They share an incredible bond of mutual love, trust and respect. In a tender moment, she took a break from foraging, approached Thiwan, and gently rested her head upon him, emitting contented rumbling purrs. It's important to understand that, no matter how beautiful their relationship is, elephants are still wild animals. A mahouts job is incredibly dangerous. This is why we believe that in order to be truly ’ethical' there should be no contact between guests & elephants. The more contact tourists seek, the more fear-based control a mahout must use, making it more dangerous for everyone, and it does not benefit the elephants in any way, shape or form.

Let elephants be elephants.

After a week in care little Bupe is recovering nicely with around-the-clock care by K Keeper Matthews and our friends at @chipembelewildlife Trust - in Mfuwe. Within hours of his arrival, he was starting to bond with Matthews, comfort suckling his fingers, and within two days Matthews was able to move safely inside the enclosure with him to provide feeds and comfort. Bupe had been away from his mother for at least 5 days, and as a milk dependent calf the loss of condition was evidenced in his sunken face. He was rescued with multiple wounds from the dense thorny thickets in which he was hiding. Without good nutrition and with the stress of losing his mother, his immune system was compromised, and his wounds became very infected. However, over this past week Bupe has responded so well to the milk formula and tolerated intensive wound management and is really making a comeback. Matthews reports “He is getting better and better every day, the swollen leg is gradually healing, and you can see the difference from the way it was when he came, and the way it is now. I'm happy to say that his body condition is really changing and very encouraging.” Now that Bupe has stabilised we will be preparing to relocate him to the Elephant Nursery where he will become part of a new family who will help him recover from his traumas and together, they will take their next steps towards a life back in the wild where they belong. Together we can make a difference! Please consider donating today to help Bupe and the other orphans on their journey back to the wild where they belong. Elephants inject so much emotional and physic energy into a relationship that I find so compelling…. Their love compassion & care for their family and the close ones is something one must learn. They may not be the kings of the jungle but surly are a Royal. Their spiritual demeanour & physical presence makes’em unstoppable that even the kings bow down to them.. this particular family really inspired me as I observed their mannerisms from close . #wildlifelessons #wildlife #inspirationfromthewild #rishinakandhariphotography #elephants #asianelephant #elephantbehaviour #netgeoyourshot #bbcearth #elephantsofinstagram

A Tusker, let's call him Tusker A, in pic 1, probably 25-30 yrs(?) was seen hanging around the jeep path feeding on young bamboo, but generally seemed distracted. His attention was almost entirely inside the bushes. His curved pen|s was out and it looked like a female could be inside the bushes. On going back a bit, we could make out another huge elephant in the bushes. . A few mins later, Tusker A decided to move on up the path and then he moved completely off the path further up. . On cue, who should emerge but a female elephant and her 2 yo(?) calf, followed by the hidden male - Tusker B. Probably 30+ in age, going by size, although tusks were smaller.(?) . It seemed like the female was in estrus and Tusker B was the one with mating rights and guarding her from hangers on like Tusker A. You can see in the second slide the distance Tusker A was maintaining. . After moving a very reluctant jeep (that should have maintained more distance in the first place) out of the way, the trio crossed the path and disappeared into the bushes. But not before Tusker B did some scent marking as seen in pic 4(?). . As we left the scene Tusker A was still hanging around the same spot gazing away into the bushes where the trio had disappeared. . (The understanding here is based on what was observed and later read. Pls do feel free to add more gyaan or correct any errors in the comments.) . . . . . . #elephants #tuskers #elephantbehaviour #elephasmaximus #elephant #elephantsofinstagram #bandipur #karnataka #wildlife

For 30 years, STE has conducted vital research on elephant behaviour and ecology to provide fresh insight into the lives of elephants and to better protect them. This research has led to the publication of more than 220 peer-reviewed papers in esteemed scientific journals with topics covering everything from the impact of elephant deterrents on farms, to what happens to the bodies and minds of baby elephants when they lose their mothers, how elephants could teach us to avoid cancer, what elephants love to eat and why their legendary sense of smell keeps them from raiding farms. As we mark our 30th anniversary, we are as committed as ever to providing solid scientific data to help design impactful solutions and guide policy for a better future for the species, and the humans they cohabit with. On 25th August 2023 while on daily research and monitoring routines, our team spotted Chamilandu’s Herd, including Mutaanzi David (Chamilandu's offspring), Rufunsa, and Mosi at the side of Lake Itezhi Tezhi, north of the Elephant Release Facility for the first time. Tafika, a graduate from the Release Facility, and now a wild elephant, was spotted around this area last week and could have guided Chamilandu's herd to the lakeside. Exploring these landscapes is important for Chamma’s herd as it adds knowledge to their understanding of resource distribution and survival. The lakeside area offers fresh grass and water and is usually populated with wild elephants at this time of year as the park begins to dry up. With the area being densely populated with elephants, we believe Chamma’s herd will have interacted with wild herds, an amazing learning experiences that could be passed on to the younger elephants of the Release Herd at some point too. With this changes in movements, we can only hope they continue to utilise these spaces more and become even more comfortable in the wild. #WeAreAllRangers #WildlifeRescue #savethewildlife #wildlife #elephants #elephantrescue #elephantbabies #elephantlovers #elephantresearch #elephantbehaviour #savetheelephant

Over the past three decades, we’ve tracked, with our partners, more than 300 elephants across Africa and learnt so much about their behaviour and the decisions they make. One such elephant, Naisula (pictured with her calf), surprised our team back in 2020 when she trekked upto the top of Ololokwe - the Samburu’s sacred mountain almost 2000m above sea level in northern Kenya - and spent a month up there with her family. Elephants are known to trek to the top of Ololokwe but it was the first time that Save the Elephants had tracked an elephant making this arduous journey. It’s an amazing feat for a four tonne elephant (that’s nearly the weight of four small cars) because of the sheer physical energy needed to get up the mountain. A true testament to how strong and resilient elephants can be. As we mark our 30th anniversary this year, stay tuned for more snapshots of our efforts over the past three decades to secure a future for elephants. 📸 @janewynyard/Save the Elephants #STEat30 #savetheelephants #threedecades #30years #elephants #elephant #elephantbehaviour

Today is #WorldElephantDay - a day dedicated to the preservation and protection of the world's elephants. At @elephantvoices we use knowledge acquired over decades to act as a voice for elephants. In the wild, ivory poaching, destruction of habitat, competition with people for diminishing resources, sport hunting, culling and capture, all threaten the freedom and survival of elephants. In captivity, their well-being is affected by abusive practices and exploitation for commercial gain. Through Conservation, Advocacy, Research and Education, we promote the protection and kinder treatment of elephants wherever they may be. As acknowledged experts on the natural behavior of elephants we offer insight to protect them and the authority to speak on their behalf. In 2021 we launched The Elephant Ethogram; a uniquely detailed catalogue, or library, of the behavior and communication of African savanna elephants (Loxodonta africana). It is based on decades of ElephantVoices behavioral studies, photographs, and audio and video recordings, the referenced research of other elephant biologists, as well as professional and amateur footage made available to ElephantVoices. It consists of written and referenced descriptions, video examples, photographic illustrations, and, where relevant, audio recordings of 404 Behaviors, 109 Behavioral Constellations, and 23 Behavioral Contexts. There are over 3,000 media files in the fully searchable Elephant Ethogram including 2,400 educational video clips, each with detailed descriptions and stories. 🐘 So, if you would like to learn more about elephant behaviour, then please visit the link in our bio. #theelephantethogram #elephantvoices #elephants #animalbehaviour #wildlife #stopthetrade #conservationresearch #wildlifephotography #wildlifeconservation #elephantcommunication #elephantbehaviour #ethology #elephantresearch #animalbehavior #conservationscience #conservationbiology #animalemotions #ethogram #conservationphotography #elephant

No? 💻: https://www.elephantvoices.org 📕: Community Elephant Conflict Mitigation Workshop (pdf), www.ehranamibia.org #icavour #theelephantethogram #elephantvoices #elephants #animalbehaviour #wildlife #elephantcommunication #elephantbehaviour #ethology #elephantresearch #animalbehavior #conservationscience #conservationbiology #ethogram #elephant @theelephantwhisperers @bioparcoroma @ehranamibia

An elephant’s hide looks tough, but in fact it is sensitive to the strong African sun and parasites like ticks. Coating themselves in dust or mud protects their skin from the intense sun and biting insects. I have always noticed that the elephants always do dust bathing individually. When it comes to a severe dust storm, the herd comes close and hurdles together. Safety of the children and young ones are the top priority. #asian_elephants #corbetttigerresrve #duststorm #nikonindiaofficial # nikonasia #sandiskextremeteam #sandiskextemepro #SanDisk #elephantbehaviour #artwildlife_photographer_india #artwildlifephotography #artphotography #akashendu_das #akash_das #brand_ambassador #enviormantalist #naturelover #vanishingwilds

The African Bush Elephant (Loxodonta africana) (EN) can have a shoulder height of up to 4 meters! . Despite being an endangered species due to poaching and the ivory trade, there is also a serious problem with *overpopulation* in Southern Africa. This has led to dramatic habitat loss and degradation and is due to the number of artificial watering holes built by tourist companies which has removed a lot of the selective pressures which would otherwise keep their population in check. Morning stroll (Part 2) If you recall Monday’s post of an elephant family with a calf, this is what the scene turned to after a few minutes. Three became four and there were more family conversations that surfaced. It looked as though it was a kitty party of kinds and it was a delight to see how so many more of them started to join the conversations. We left the place to them thinking how identical we are to them in our social structure. PS: Reposted to have a continuation of earlier post. #elephants #asiatic #asiaticelephant #asiaticelephants #animalbehavior #elephant #elephantherd #elephantbehaviour #junglescape #junglescene #elephantsantuary #elephantsafari #animalsafari #junglesafari #safari #safariphotography #photostory #photostorytelling #praveenashok #praveenkashok #lenstrails #lenstrails_stories #karnataka #wildkarnataka #bandipur #bandipurforest #bandipurnationalpark

Elephant dung collected by Save the Elephants researchers almost two decades ago, has survived the test of time to play a key role in new research about the intricacies of elephant diets. A team of researchers, including STE’s @georgewittemyer, were able to utlilise the old dung samples from Samburu, northern Kenya, to determine that elephants, like humans, vary their diets in relation to how they are feeling and what is going on in their lives. The dung, kept in storage for almost 20 years, was combined with innovative DNA metabarcoding, GPS tracking and remote sensing data in the study led by @BrownU. Head over to the link in bio to read more about this remarkable study. 📸 @janewynyard/Save the Elephants #elephantbehaviour #elephants #elephant #science #research #researchers #diet #study

Morning stroll.. That morning’s safari yielded many wonders including this scene where a family with a calf was seen taking a morning stroll. Elephants social system is complex and identical in many ways to that of ours (or perhaps we learnt from them). Uniquely matriarchal and filled with aunts who play a role from midwife to guardian, is so endearing to observe. Known to be emotionally well bonded and making relationships for life, we definitely have a thing or two to learn. #elephant #asiaticelephant #elephants #elephantbehaviour #animalbehavior #morningsun #goldenhour #goldenhourphotography #photostory #photostorytelling #praveenashok #praveenkashok #lenstrails #lenstrails_stories #forest #forestsafari #jungle #junglesafari #elephantfamily #bandipur #bandipurforest #bandipurnationalpark #bandipurtigerreserve

You know by now we like variety on our IG. So high time to give our four-legged friends some attention again 😊! . We have been on safari countless times in many different countries both in Asia and Africa. And some people say 'it's always the same'. But that's just it: it's never (!) the same! . Every encounter with wild animals turns out different! Sometimes there are adorable moments with little ones running around recklessy, other moments we saw animals grabbed by preditors, nature taking it's course, or a hippo storming out of a river in front of our jeep as if it saw a ghost. . Or like here in South Africa: a couple of elephants come out of the forest and cover themselves with sand. . Elephants are not only impressive, they are also smart and even a little vain. The sand serves as a sunscreen and insect repellent! So their skin is protected when they suddenly enter an open plain and the trees no longer protect them from the bright sun. . A perfect moment for a photographer of course👌! . Hope you guys like it. Have a nice sunday! . #elephantsofinstagram #elephantsworld #elephantlovers #elephantlover #wildelephants #elephantbehaviour #safarilife #safariphotography #safari #safariafrica #safariphoto #southafricansafari #wildlife #wildlifephotography #wildlifephoto #wildlifeplanet #elephantlife #travelphotography #travelphotographer #wildlifephotographer #elephantlove #nikonphotographer #nikonphotography_ #natgeotravelpics #natgeowildlife #gentlegiants #wildlife_perfection #elephants #africanelephants

Nothing like a day perched on a mountainside deep in the jungle, watching..... Elephants being elephants, no touching, no bathing no selfies no sitting on or under by humans... just living their best lives in the jungle.. the way it should be. @beeselephants is a great place to experience elephants in an authentic ethical way. #lookdonttouch #wannabewild #asianelephants #thaielephant #maechaemchiangmai #positivereinforcementtraining #compassioninaction #observationonly #qualityoverquantity💯 #honestyisthebestpolicy #integritymatters #trueelephantsanctuary #keepitsimple #bigbusinessisntsanctuary #beeselephantsanctuary #elephantbehaviour #elephanteducation #ridebikesnotelephants #dontrideelephants #elephantselfiesareselfish

Moving rock! Elephants are one of the most intelligent species found on earth. Their ability to assess a situation, evaluate the surroundings and their reflex time is astonishing and almost always surprising. This was an image I created during a safari drive at Bandipura. It was in October (of 2016), the forest was brimming with post monsoon aura and here was an elephant standing still like a rock right on the middle of the track. It was a tense 5 mins not knowing what she was evaluating and her next move before she finally decided to mockcharge and rush away into the jungle. Felt as though there was huge rock right there and which suddenly decided to move in our direction. Thanks to the experience of our Safari Jeep driver, who knew the behavior well and didn’t panic drive the vehicle into a ditch. Phew… quite intense an experience it was.. Rest-Head An elephant resting his or her head on another. Rest-Head often occurs during play when one elephant rests his or her head on the back or flank of another. It is also often observed in a resting group when one elephant rests his or her head on a nearby elephant. In Courtship a male may Rest-Head on an estrous female as a prelude to Mounting. On rarer occasions a female may Rest-Head on another female in a display of dominance. On several occasions we have observed this behavior in the presence of a newborn infant, sometimes during an attempted kidnapping, when a dominant female places her head on the back of a younger mother.

Do you speak elephant? According to Melinda Sacks from Stanford, head shaking  occurs if an elephant wants to say “back off” or show displeasure. She will face her subject straight on and shake her head from side to side, resulting in flapping ears and an impressively strong message. This regularly happen if there are babies in the heard which they want to protect. #elephant #tuliwilderness #tuli #botswanatourism #elephantbehaviour #safariphotography

Just days after Lani returned to the Release Facility, we have had another three orphans re-join the herd after three months of roaming wild. As the orphans were walking towards Silwimba pools for an afternoon drink, just 200m from the dry season boma, Keeper Derrick noticed three ‘wild’ elephants grazing up ahead. Musolole (Muso) eagerly led the orphans to these elephants as the Keepers approached with caution. As they got closer the team were overjoyed to find it was Mphamvu, Mulisani and Kasewe! Muso (who has always been one of the most social of the orphans) was the first to approach them. Mulisani was ‘streaming’ from his temporal glands (a visual display of emotion/excitement) and eagerly sniffing his truck towards Muso, but Muso first approached Mphamvu (his size/age mate and the most senior of the three), he then went back to the smaller Mulisani in turn. The three engaged in friendly, reaffirming body rubs, trunk-to-body and trunk-to-mouth touching behaviours (affiliative interactions). Kavala was next to join in the reunion with similar affectionate touching and social bonding displays and Mphamvu was particularly interested in interacting with her. Nkala was next in line to approach and take his turn to reunite with Mphamvu and Muli. The younger orphans Ludaka, Tuko, Lani and Olimba all took their turns to reconnect with Kasewe who was also ‘streaming’ from this encounter, although their reunion behaviours were more subtle than the older elephants of the herd. Once all the elephants had come together there was a general cohesion, and all continued to graze comfortably together by the pools. Lani rejoins the orphan herd at Kafue Release Facility! Lani, the youngest of the orphans who left the Release Facility in March has just returned! Previously she was seen mid-May with Maramba and the other 5 adventurers, all looking great and seemingly not interested in returning to the boma. However, just a couple of days ago during the afternoon walk the Keepers and orphans came across Chamilandu and her herd. Head Keeper Lasick said “Chamma’s herd are 5, but we saw there are 6. We thought there must be a wild one with them!” They got a bit closer and then realised it was Lani! Keeper Derrick called her name, and she came over to greet him. Olimba quickly approached Lani and greeted her, where they stood wrapping their trunks together in reunion. The Keepers and orphans stayed with Chamma’s herd for 30mins until it was time to return to the boma. As they started to head back Lani remained with Olimba and Kavala and easily returned inside the boma gates. Lasick commented that “She was not comfortable living in the wild and is now happy to be reunited with her young surrogate siblings. She has made a good decision to come back as she is still young, alone she is vulnerable to predators. Unlike those bigger, older elephants who are now wild”. #WeAreAllRangers #elephantrescue #elephantmonitoring #elephantlovers #elephantresearch #elephantbehaviour #savetheelephant #OTA #ifawglobal #SPN #dswfwildlife

Two females and one male? Over the years, I have observed an extremely different and interesting behavioural action by the elephant race. I have never seen this behaviour with any other species. First of all elephants like to mate in seclusion but in the presence of other members of the family, whether female or male. What is the most intriguing aspect of this, is that while mating, one or two other female members stay extremely close to the mating female. Sometimes, the other female touches the female in heat with her trunk, sometimes it whispers and sometimes it gives support to the mating female so that the male can mount on her easily. A couple of months later when the new born baby arrives, these are the women who look after the little one, and go out of their way to protect the child. Interesting are the ways of animal Kingdom. #nikonindiaofficial #nikonasia #nikonZ9 #nikon500pf #sandiskCfexpres #extreamteammember #SanDisk #elephantbehaviour #elephantmating #wildlifeart #artwildlife_photographer_india #akashendu_das #akash_das #finartphotography
