Well, I had seven hours to spare! Just entered this year’s David Shepherd, Artist of the Year competition, by the seat of my pants! I’ve put these two in, we’ll see... I don’t feel they’re quite as strong as my painted dogs, but I adored painting them both, and the entry fee goes to an amazingly worthy cause, so it’s a win-win for me! Oh, and if you’re wondering what happened to the polar bear and the rainbow waterfall, (scroll along) well, I think it was turning into a bit of a My Little Pony cross, just weird 🤭 The final straw was when Mum thought he’d had a heavy night at the curry house 🙄😂 but you have to try these ideas, and I will at some point paint the polar bear properly rather than a stuck-on version.

One of our closest living relatives, chimps are starting to face increasing pressure across their home range of Central and West Africa. This infant, that I was lucky enough to watch in the wild, is a great source of fresh hope for the future of the species. With the link being so close, it becomes very easy for us to athropomorphise this baby chimp and look apon it as we would a human baby. Appreciating the sweet innocence of infancy and hope for a bright and happy future in their wild home. We are so happy to share with you another quote from one of our talented Realms of Hope artists @cole.stirling whose new collection you can see and purchase at OXO Gallery in London, November 22-26th in our Realms of Hope exhibition in support of @dswfwildlife along with 5 other artists. Born and raised in Zimbabwe, Cole’s passion for the wilds of Africa started at an early age. Some of his earliest memories include waking up for early morning drives in Hwange National Park or sitting for hours at one of the numerous waterholes, to see what came to drink. Art came as a by-product of this love for nature and a way to express this passion. From childhood, Cole was sketching his favourite animals, trying to replicate pictures from the numerous field guides he had started to collect. At Rhodes University, Grahamstown, South Africa, this hobby was then honed, where he completed a Fine Art degree. Although focused on photography, he never gave up drawing and sketching. His photography helped inform his drawing and conceptualise pieces he had in his mind’s eye. Cole has always been drawn to the nostalgia of monochrome imagery, especially in photography, and feels that informed his approach to his artworks. Although being colour-blind, this also comes in quite handy! The simplicity that this approach allows is something he has always found appealing and is a feature he strives for in his works. Nothing brings to the fore the feeling of hope as the welcoming of a new generation. Elephants form massively strong family groups, led by a mature female, the matriarch. The centre of an elephant family group is the youngster and everything in a herd centres around nurturing and protecting the next generation. This is the embodiment of this piece. This will be the last time I see my two artworks "Death Stare_The Cape Buffalo" and "Likwena" as we prepare to leave the UK. It seemed fitting to have a photograph taken in front of our beautiful signed print of David Shepherd's as the crocodile piece was shortlisted for the David Shepherd Wildlife Foundation Wildlife Artist of the Year 2023. This trip has been incredible for me as an artist. I've managed to meet the organizers of the London Art Biennale, agents, judges and other artists and I cannot thank each and every person who was involved in the logistics of getting my artworks framed and delivered to and from the two different exhibitions, especially my dearest Mom! It really has been a great learning experience and will move forward with new ideas and new connections. And here is the first reveal! 1 of 5 artworks that will be part of the Realms of Hope exhibition in November. It's a portrait of an Indian Rhino, one of the 5 subspecies of rhino that are still alive today. Rhino's as a whole are clinging onto existence and have an uphill battle to survive. True to the mantra of the exhibition, 'Hope' , the Indian One-horned rhino is a beacon of hope. Once numbering only around 200 at the start of the 20th century, there are now believed to be around 4000 rhinos in northeastern India and the Terai grasslands of Nepal. It was in these Terai grasslands, in Chitwan national park, where I encountered this rhino. After a very wet search we finally found this individual, and enjoyed watching as it peacefully fed, not 10m from our vehicle. It is in moments like that when I am at peace, lost in the wonder of nature, and is an emotion I try to convey through my art. First out of 5 artworks shared 🐋 I’m incredibly excited to share my first of 5 artworks that will be part of the Realms of Hope exhibition in November. A group of male Humpback whales chasing a female during a spectacular ‘Heat run’, showing a glimpse of the spectacular events that take place below the ocean’s surface. In the next days I will share my personal experiences with these spectacular animals over the years. I had some stunning encounters, but the most memorable was in South Africa in 2018. It involves breaching individuals close to our 3 persons boat! Madness. It is these encounters that fuel my creative spirit for years. It’s a feeling that is hard to describe really. For now, I hope that you will enjoy this imagery, I had a wonderful time creating it. Held at the Mall Galleries on Tuesday 12th September 2023 (12 - 1pm). This demonstration aims to teach you the delicate art of watercolours as you hear from one of the most prestigious watercolorists of our time. And all while being surrounded by the stunning array of artwork participating in this year's highly anticipated Wildlife Artist of the Year including my Crocodile art piece "Likwena". I believe networking and meeting up with other Artists is an important part of an Artist’s business. The other day I was deeply humbled to meet up with non other than, Tichaona Ncube or @tichthewatchman from Victoria Falls, Zimbabwe. What an incredible human being. Softly spoken and so welcoming. What a difference a year makes! I am humbled and hugely grateful to be a finalist in the highly prestigious DSWF Wildlife Artist of the Year competition with the beautiful Sumatran Orangutan. I often pinch myself that I produced it! 🤔😵 I know from last year's disappointment that this is a tough competition. There were 1,400 entries from 61 countries were received this year. However let's not forget that this is for fundraising and from the 2023 entries alone more than £32,000 was raised for the conservation efforts of DSWF and the work of their ground-based partners across Africa and Asia. 🙌🙌 Art is an amazing way to raise these much needed funds. Absolutely speechless to receive notification today that ‘Wildfire Haze’ has been shortlisted for the Final of the DSWF Wildlife Artist of the Year 2023, in the ‘Earths Wild Beauty’ category! @dswfwildlifeart ‘Wildfire Haze’ is based on the Dorset heathland wildfires last summer. And that whilst most see wildfire as destructive, it is not always the case ~ many indigenous communities have been doing burning for millennia, wildfire is an important aspect regrowth and regeneration in our ecology. Just days after Lani returned to the Release Facility, we have had another three orphans re-join the herd after three months of roaming wild. As the orphans were walking towards Silwimba pools for an afternoon drink, just 200m from the dry season boma, Keeper Derrick noticed three ‘wild’ elephants grazing up ahead. Musolole (Muso) eagerly led the orphans to these elephants as the Keepers approached with caution. As they got closer the team were overjoyed to find it was Mphamvu, Mulisani and Kasewe! Muso (who has always been one of the most social of the orphans) was the first to approach them. Mulisani was ‘streaming’ from his temporal glands (a visual display of emotion/excitement) and eagerly sniffing his truck towards Muso, but Muso first approached Mphamvu (his size/age mate and the most senior of the three), he then went back to the smaller Mulisani in turn. The three engaged in friendly, reaffirming body rubs, trunk-to-body and trunk-to-mouth touching behaviours (affiliative interactions). Kavala was next to join in the reunion with similar affectionate touching and social bonding displays and Mphamvu was particularly interested in interacting with her. Nkala was next in line to approach and take his turn to reunite with Mphamvu and Muli. The younger orphans Ludaka, Tuko, Lani and Olimba all took their turns to reconnect with Kasewe who was also ‘streaming’ from this encounter, although their reunion behaviours were more subtle than the older elephants of the herd. Once all the elephants had come together there was a general cohesion, and all continued to graze comfortably together by the pools. Lani rejoins the orphan herd at Kafue Release Facility! Lani, the youngest of the orphans who left the Release Facility in March has just returned! Previously she was seen mid-May with Maramba and the other 5 adventurers, all looking great and seemingly not interested in returning to the boma. However, just a couple of days ago during the afternoon walk the Keepers and orphans came across Chamilandu and her herd. Head Keeper Lasick said “Chamma’s herd are 5, but we saw there are 6. We thought there must be a wild one with them!” They got a bit closer and then realised it was Lani! Keeper Derrick called her name, and she came over to greet him. Olimba quickly approached Lani and greeted her, where they stood wrapping their trunks together in reunion. The Keepers and orphans stayed with Chamma’s herd for 30mins until it was time to return to the boma. As they started to head back Lani remained with Olimba and Kavala and easily returned inside the boma gates. Lasick commented that “She was not comfortable living in the wild and is now happy to be reunited with her young surrogate siblings. She has made a good decision to come back as she is still young, alone she is vulnerable to predators. The Board, Management, and staff at Game Rangers International (GRI) join the people of Zambia today, to celebrate the life of Zambia’s late founding President Dr. Kenneth Kaunda. His commitment, passion, and love for wildlife and conservation will always be in our hearts at GRI. We cherish his long-lasting friendship with David Shepherd, founder of the @dswfwildlife (DSWF) and partner of GRI. Their love and support for wildlife will always be remembered. To honour Dr Kaunda and his love for wildlife, we planted a tree at the entrance of @gri_wildlifediscoverycentre WDC. Dr. Kaunda’s family joined the family of David Shepherd as these trees were planted. This bird has other monikers like Asian King Vulture, Pondicherry Vulture. One of the reasons for its dwindling population is diclofenac poisoning present in carcasses of cattle, another is habitat loss. When I visited the carcass center outside Jodhpur, I noticed lots of plastic lying around. Apparently, our cattle are eating so much plastic that sits in their digestive tract. It was so sad to see this and I wondered, what happens when vultures eat these dead cattle, I wonder what happens to them. The total vulture population has dwindled by 90% mainly due to diclofenac poisoning. Vultures are fondly known as Earth cleaners because their fondness for rotting animals keeps diseases at bay.
