Today is #HyperemesisAwarenessDay ! Often abbreviated as HG, hyperemesis gravidarum is a term coined to describe severe vomitting and nausea present during pregnancy. Although it does not usually pose a risk to the baby when treated, it can be very debilitating and isolating to the mother/pregnant person. This can in turn lead to mental health issues. If you are currently pregnant and vomiting and nausea are impacting on your mental health, it is worth mentioning it to your midwife. If you suffered from HG in previous pregnancy, it is also important to let your midwife know. For more information, please have a look on the NHS website or go and visit @pregnancysicknesssupport . They have a treasure trove of information and support and also have a helpline (0800 055 4361). #elftperinatal #elftperinatalservices #hyperemesis #pregnancysickness #pregnancysicknesssupport

This week's 🌟 #wellnesswednesday 🌟 is shared with #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek in mind. This year's theme is "moving more for our mental health", and this is advice that can also be adapted to the perinatal period. We already know that exercising or simply moving is good for us, particularly whilst pregnant. But painful hips, c-section scars, leaky breasts, lack of sleep, stitches, back pain, hormonal flushes, swollen feet, crying babies (etc etc etc) can make exercising or moving difficult, if not uncomfortable and painful. Because the body is more prone to injury during the perinatal period, it is recommended not to take up new activities but there are some free/cheap gentle activities we can partake in which can do wonders for our mental health and physical health. We are only sharing a handful of them but if you have other activities you like to do and would like to share, please let us know! #elftperinatal #elftperinatalservices #maternalmentalhealth #perinatalmentalhealth

🌟 Wellness Wednesday 🌟 Today’s post focuses on pelvic health: whether you are pregnant or postpartum, prioritising pelvic floor exercises is a good idea. Strengthening this area aids in combating incontinence, prolapse, improving lower back health, and enhancing overall comfort. Luckily, it is easy to do at home for most of us! Today we focus on two resources: the Squeezy app for guided exercises which costs £2.99 and the NHS website, which offers free, expert advice in web form. Remember, always consult your midwife or GP to ensure pelvic floor exercises are suitable for you, as some may require professional guidance. #PelvicHealth #PostpartumFitness #wellnesswednesday #elftperinatalservices #elftperinatal #prolapse #prolapserecovery

We are back for another #WellnessWednesday at #ELFTPerinatalServices 😊 Today, we are sharing tips on drinking water 💧It is easy to forget to drink enough water when tired, in pain, or navigating the demands of a new addition to the family. However, staying hydrated throughout the day can significantly and positively impact our overall health. From boosting mood and milk production to improving sleep, immune function, digestion, and hormonal balance, water plays a crucial role. Remember, these factors all influence our mental well-being. Aim for 8 glasses a day, and consider keeping a large water bottle nearby or setting reminders on your phone to stay on track. And cups of tea counts too! #maternalmentalhealth #ELFTPerinatal #perinatalmentalhealth

Because pregnancy and postpartum are such vulnerable times for mothers and birthing parents, we tend to minimise otherwise serious symptoms by thinking they are a normal part of hormonal fluctuation, tiredness, lifestyle changes, etc. And whilst this is true that a certain degree of mood changes is to be expected, if it lasts for too long or if it is impacting your mental health, then it is definitely worth getting checked out. We are not always best equipped to identify whether our symptoms are problematic or not because we get used to them. So we minimise them. However, thinking you are not unwell enough should not stop you from accessing perinatal services. If you get referred to #ELFTPerinatal, you first get assessed by a clinician who will be best placed to understand your needs and issues. You will not waste anyone’s time by reaching out. #elftperinatalservices #maternalmentalhealth #maternalmentalthmatters #perinatal #perinatalmentalhealth

One of our service users shared how even during the toughest times, spending just 20 minutes outside during the school run was a game-changer in battling postnatal depression: after a long night of very little sleep and constant feeding, morning daylight helps wake up the body for the day. What is safety sleep week? Safer Sleep Week is The Lullaby Trust’s national awareness campaign targeting anyone looking after a young baby. The aim of the week is to raise awareness of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and the make people/parents/caregivers simple advice that reduces the risk of it occurring. We know that greater awareness of safer sleep leads to a decrease in the numbers of babies dying. There are several ways to help ensure safer sleep for your little one. *Keep the cot clear and empty *Dress the baby appropriately for the room temperature *Sleep in the same room as your baby for the first 6 months *Keep your baby and the bedroom smoke free *Lie your baby on their back at the bottom of the cot *Use a firm, flat and waterproof mattress #nhs #safersleepweek #safersleep #elftperinatalservices #elftperinatal #eastlondonfoundationtrust #maternal #maternalmentalhealth #perinatalmentalhealth #babysafety

Learning about emotional health can be very helpful during the perinatal period, a moment in our lives where we tend to feel a lot of emotions, sometimes contradictory, at the same time. It can leave us feeling confused, overwhelmed, anxious… Despair or rage can set in. Understanding our emotions, good AND bad, is the first step to get better. Once we understand an emotion and can put a name on it, with appropriate help, it gets easier to keep in control of the bad ones. In turns, it helps build up our resilience and our ability to cope. This is not the same thing as bottling up our feelings and “putting on a brave smile”. On the contrary, this relies on us being able to “let it all out” and then look at it and understand it. We can’t be happy all the time. Life comes with its share of problems and obstacles, sometimes big and sometimes small, and a healthy emotional health allows us to cope with the ups and downs. One thing to remember though: emotional health is not the same as being happy all the time. #elftperinatalservices #elftperinatal #emotionalhealth #emotionalhealthmatters

**WORLD BREASTFEEDING IN PUBLIC DAY** 🤱 If you choose to breastfeed, you may be wondering about the practicalities of breastfeeding when you are out and about. Some mothers and birthing parents do not feel comfortable breastfeeding in public for reasons we must respect. However, should you wish to breastfeed in public but are apprehensive about it, know that there are ways to make the whole experience less stressful. The NHS has some good advice on this very topic. We will share the link below as well as in our stories. Remember that whatever you choose to do, it is your right to breastfeed in public and it is your baby’s right to be breastfed in public too. You cannot be asked to leave, you certainly cannot be asked to go to the loo, and you cannot be asked to cover up your baby’s head either. Breastfeeding is a natural bodily function that is neither unhygienic or rude or impinging on anyone else’s freedom. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/baby/breastfeeding-and-bottle-feeding/breastfeeding/breastfeeding-in-public/ #elftperinatalservices #elftperinatal #breastfeeding #breastfeedinginginpublic #breastfeedinguk #breastfeedingandthelaw

Thank you so much for having followed our mini series on maternal OCD, and the various ways it can manifest itself. This was my no mean the extent of maternal OCD but hopefully, it will make you feel less alone if you suffer from it, or it will perhaps help you put a name on distressing thoughts and images you may experience during the perinatal period. If there is one thing to take away from this is that intrusive thoughts and images are normal. What is not normal is for these thoughts and images to influence your life choices and ultimately to lead you to developing coping mechanisms and rituals. If you find yourself in this situation, you should seek help because OCD is treatable. You can approach your GP or midwife or, if you are pregnant or have just given birth, you can self-refer to #elftperinatalservices following the link in our bio. #maternalOCD #OCD #maternalmentalhealth #pnd #elftperinatal #intrusivethoughts #intrusiveimages

Unfortunately, cancer never takes a day off. And today we remember the toll it takes on people’s physical and mental health. It seems cruel to think that cancer would invite itself along during pregnancy and postpartum, when new life is at the centre of it. And of course, sometimes the grief comes from a loved one being ill. Whatever way cancer happened in one’s perinatal journey, it is without a doubt a huge shock to one’s mental health too. And if this is you, then know you can asked to be referred or self-refer directly to #elftperinatalservices ❤️ #worldcancerwarenessday #elftperinatal #perinatalcancer #maternalcancer

If you have ever had such thoughts, you are not alone. You are not a monster. You need help and there is no shame in that. For a mother, the occurrence of thoughts involving harm to her own baby can be particularly distressing and counterintuitive to her maternal instincts. These intrusive thoughts do not reflect her true desires or intentions but rather result from the brain's complex and sometimes unwarranted thought patterns. It is essential to understand that such thoughts are a common aspect of various anxiety disorders, like postpartum anxiety. Seeking support from mental health professionals, engaging in open communication, and fostering a non-judgmental environment can help individuals navigate and manage these intrusive thoughts, ensuring the well-being of both parent and child. #elftperinatal #elftperinatalservices #maternalOCD #intrusivethoughts #pnd #maternalmentalhealth

In individuals with Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD), the belief in good and bad numbers is often linked to the intrusive and distressing nature of their obsessive thoughts. OCD is a mental health condition characterised by persistent, unwanted thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental acts (compulsions) aimed at reducing the anxiety caused by these thoughts. The fixation on good and bad numbers is a manifestation of the need for control and order that is commonly seen in OCD. Individuals with OCD may develop specific rituals or behaviors associated with certain numbers to alleviate their anxiety. These numbers can be perceived as having intrinsic qualities, with some considered 'good' or 'safe,' while others are deemed 'bad' or 'dangerous.' The underlying mechanism often involves irrational beliefs that performing certain actions or adhering to specific numerical patterns can prevent harm or bring about a sense of security. This behaviour provides a temporary relief from anxiety, but the relief is short-lived, leading to a cycle of obsessive thoughts and compulsive behaviours. If you recognise yourself in this and are within your perinatal period, then please, get in touch with your Perinatal Team. If you live within ELFT catchment area, you can self-refer using the link in our bio. #elftperinatalservices #elftperinatal #maternalocd #ocdmatters #perinatalmentalhealth

OCD and intrusive thoughts are treatable issues. You do not need to suffer on your own. CBT, medication, other therapies: they can all help. And sometimes, even when we are better and we are making progress, intrusive thoughts can come back with a vengeance. It is also normal and is part of the healing process. The triggers can be obvious, and sometimes, they happen very unexpectedly. It is OK, we are not super humans, we cannot control our mind 24/7. It is important to remember this if you yourself are suffering with OCD or if you know someone who does. Progress is not linear. Should you need help with your mental health whilst pregnant or after giving birth, you can talk to your midwife, GP or Health visitor. Alternatively, you can self-refer to your local perinatal mental health service. To access ELFT's perinatal self-referral, follow the link in our bio. #ELFTperinatal #elftperinatalservices #maternalocd #intrusivethoughts #pnd #ocdawareness

For some, new year is a time of renewal and hope and motivation. For others, it is a very anxious time. Instead of a new year full of opportunities and projects, some of us fear the unknown, look back on 2023 with mixed feelings. Some feel pressured to change things they’re not ready to change yet. And it is perfectly ok. You do not need to write a bucket list for 2024, you do not need to clean your house from top to bottom. You do not need to change anything you do not want to and cannot change. January 1st is just an arbitrary date. Nature is still hibernating, winter has only just started, and everything is supposed to be slower and quieter in winter. ❤️ Do what makes you comfortable ❤️ #newyearanxiety #elftperinatalservices #elftperinatal #perinatal #perinatalmentalhealth

Intrusive images, often associated with intrusive thoughts, are unwanted and distressing mental images that involuntarily enter a person's mind. These images can be vivid and upsetting, causing significant distress or anxiety. During the perinatal period, individuals might experience intrusive images related to fears about childbirth, harm coming to the baby, or other distressing scenarios. They are a common symptom of conditions like perinatal anxiety, depression, or obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD). Do not suffer in silence. It is best to ask for help from the start before a compulsion has the time to take root. A compulsion usually follows an intrusive thoughts as a way for the person to seek to prevent whatever scenario is happening in their heads and can be very debilitating. Leaving it unsolved can also lead to developing a phobia (notably a phobia of childbirth) or extreme anxiety. You can ask for help by visiting your GP, midwife or HV or you can also self-refer to your local perinatal mental health team. You can refer to ELFT Perinatal Services through the link in our bio. #elftperinatal #elftperinatalservices #maternalocd #intrusivethoughts #intrusiveimages #perinatalanxiety

For the next few weeks, we will look at common thought patterns often found in people during the perinatal period. The one we are looking at today is a very common one and one you are probably familiar with: “If I don’t do x then y will happen.” If you have ever had a thought like this, you are not alone. When pregnant or after giving birth, a lot feels out of our hands and it is a way for your brain to seek to be in control. Nothing bad can happen if I do that very specific small task… You can relax, it soothes you… Then the small task becomes a Big Task, a monster in itself that takes a huge toll on our quality of life and mental health. Checking a baby is breathing once is a while is common and totally normal. Believing that your baby’s life depends on you waking up every 20 minutes to check if they are breathing is not. Your exhaustion feeds your anxiety, which feeds to thoughts and a vicious circle is born. If you find yourself overwhelmed by this thought pattern, it is important to seek help before it becomes a big thing. Your midwife or your GP can refer to online self help to nip it in the bud. If you are already overwhelmed, remember to be honest with whomever you turned to for help. You may not want to for fear or judgment but no one will judge you and a lot of new parents have gone through the exact same thing. If you feel that you cannot approach your GP or midwife, then you can often self-refer to your local Perinatal Mental Health Team. If you live within ELFT catchment area, you can use the link in our bio to self-refer. Someone will then assess you and direct you to appropriate help. Hang in there, this can be solved and there is help out there. #elftperinatalservices #elftperinatal #ocd #intrusivethoughts #maternalocd #perinatalocd #intrusivethoughtsawareness

Posted @withregram • @elftperinatalservices Everyone has intrusive thoughts. However, intrusive thoughts can become problematic when they start impacting the way you live your life. This is especially true during the perinatal period when hormones and heightened anxiety may increase their frequency, their nature and the toll they take on you. In the next few weeks, we will look at maternal intrusive thoughts and maternal OCD. Our hope is that you will feel less alone if you have such thoughts, that we may help you if you feel overwhelmed and that you can learn how to cope with them from other mums and pregnant people who have experienced the same. #elftperinatalservices #elftperinatal #maternalocd #intrusivethoughts #intrusivethoughtsawareness #maternalintrusivethoughts

#worldmentalhealthday 2023 is here! Remember that you are worthy of help if you are struggling. You being unwell and seeking help does not take anything away from the mother/birthing parent you love. It is an important message to hear and share, especially for partners who often feel like they have to bottle it all up and be a rock. And for children who cannot talk for themselves. For dads, we really recommend @dadpaduk @dadmattersuk and @dadsareamilkandyou For queer partners, @thequeerbirthclub has a lot of resources. This list is non exhaustive and if you have any to recommend, please share with us! #elftperinatal #elftperinatalservices #postpartum #dadsmentalhealth #pnd #childrensmentalhealth #childrensmentalhealthmatters

Happy World Smile Day 2023! Is there anything warmer that a baby's smile, your own or a random baby on the street? Infants are born with the need to communicate with the world around them and smiling is one of the first social signs they exhibit. Before they can laugh or speak or point or walk, this is how they communicate with you. Haven't ever exchanged goofy smiles with a cute baby in the queue at the supermarket? You made that baby's day 😊 #ELFTperinatal #elftperinatalservices #wordsmileday #smilingbabies #smilingbabiesmaketheworldgoround
