The secret lives of... trees? 🌳🌲 Trees can live for hundreds and sometimes thousands of years. As they grow, they add new layers of growth – or tree rings – that scientists can study to learn about the tree’s life. The width of tree rings often reflects the factor most influencing growth from one year to the next depending upon where the tree lives. Thicker rings often mean heavy rain or snow allowed more growth during that year. Thinner rings often mean less rain or snow, and thus less growth. Scarred or lopsided rings could indicate the tree got hit by an avalanche or some other event that the tree had to recover from. Scars in the rings can also record past fires. By studying rings in individual trees and through comparisons between trees, paleoclimate researchers can learn about past changes in temperature, precipitation, fires, insect outbreaks, and hazards like avalanches and earthquakes. For example, fire scars can tell us the year, season, size, frequency, severity and climate relationships of fires that happened long ago. With the help of tree rings, scientists have been able to reconstruct environmental changes thousands of years into the past! Here’s a little about the work: The work #alostplace is a series which is very close to my heart, and is a personal reaction to the on-going global threat of environmental destruction, in particular wildfires. The series uses my own archival photographs from Australia, and scratched and reworked the images to represent both the violent power of wildfires and also my fear and anger at the devastation they cause. These heteromorph ammonites from @DorsetMuseum collection are a prime example of organisms responding to environmental pressures and trying to adapt any which way in order to survive. In this case, ammonites were unsuccessful in the long term as they ultimately died out along with the dinosaurs and a whopping two thirds of all life on the planet at the end of the Cretaceous period, around 65 million years ago. Auger argues that designers must consider their environment as the context in which their products would exist. In a world where humans have developed into the main predator of nature, we’ve started to become a destructive element to the environment, and the ideas on how we can adapt to these changes for the future are becoming more common (Halland, 2023, 5). Vaulot & Dyèvre’s project of sunlight pills is a speculative design that supports the ecological issues that society faces due to our overconsumption of natural resources. By consuming pills made of pure sunlight is needed due to the dark and cold winters. But as the temperatures of the world change due to the destruction made by humans, the idea that humans may need to artificially consume sun becomes more realistic.
