Marbling today - I've been looking forward to this session since last week! I had recently received some new materials and wanted so badly to try things out. But look at my makeshift atelier (5th pic). It's always a pain to prepare everything and to put it all away in the end. I wish I had a studio dedicated only to marbling! But that's not soon to happen... I'm still lucky I can transform my kitchen into a workshop. 🙂 Anyway, I started off and nothing went the way I wanted and at moments I was really crying and a lot of self-doubt kicked in "why am I doing this anyway?!" So I took a break and after a couple of hours and some physical activity went back working on some nature inspired patterns. Here they are. I also had a go with figurative stuff - just to try. I understand I'll need to mix my own cocktails of paint for better results, but at least I had some positive vibes in the end. Look at all that yellow! 😃 Note to self: if you don't enjoy what you're doing just don't do it. Do what you feel like and come back to what you wanted to do later. It's not worth doing anything for the sake of doing. What actually interests me while marbling are the forms that appear without my interference. After a couple of prints, I let the water sit and magic to happen. This spiral is a reminder that all fluids obey the same principles, and we should remember that all forms of existence are fluid. This is a key, the essence of this planet's laws. We built this little hut with my youngest one in a few hours time. I'm in my element when I construct, when I have to look for material, make choices and use my skills to create- whatever it is I have as an objective. Of course all parts were already on the ground. I wouldn't cut or tear anything growing just to make something so temporary for our use. Same goes for pretty much anything I create. I like to accept that whatever we make is only short lived and should smoothly become part of something else while standing and beyond. I mean, all we can find on this planet is in an endless cycle and that should be considered each time we put our eager hands on any material. Do I really need to make this last? Can I perhaps skip an energy consuming procedure to achieve a similar result? I've been in bed since yesterday with headaches, fever, feeling beaten. But today I feel a little less ruined and though I have to stay in bed, I had time to read and devoured these books today, in this order. I found the first a little discouraging, the devil's advocate, and I'm not really convinced. Michael K was fantastic, couldn't stop turning pages, it's a gem and I feel so close to K. The Museum Manifesto was a nice surprise for the first three years' editions but by 20/21 I started to feel it's gone on a track I cannot really embrace. As for the Jacob sisters' patchwork of letters, diary entries and interviews, I couldn't hold my tears back. Oh, Bartleby! Yes, *we* are all matter, actants with thing-power. I always enjoy co-creating with nonhumans. This time, it's pencil, paper and simple movements of the hand. The constraint is to be as close to the previous line as possible but without letting the lines touch each other. My full attention is needed and slow motions. Yesterday I experienced something that left me completely puzzled about the nature of certain humans, I got heartbreaking news about people who recently lost their loved ones, and was exhausted and frustrated by the mere thought of starting another week being the only adult in the house... Luckily, today I took part in a positive webinar, exchanged about readings with an inspiring person, was invited by someone for whom I care, celebrated the Carnival with preschoolers and was babysitting for a friend - all on the same day. It was a busy day, but I loved it. It gives me hope for the future in this world that often makes me feel there's nothing left of empathy and care, where death is everywhere and life is so meaningless to many. All these years... Colour pencil drawing on paper (2024) In my parents' house in Budapest. This drawing was a gift for my father's 70th birthday. Each tree ring represents one of these many years he's spent in this world as a human. The branches are his children and our children are smaller branches growing stronger each year. It took a couple of trials and errors to find the right form but I'm quite happy with the eventual result. It was touching to draw these circles and count the years, paying attention and making the branches grow the right time in the right place so to reflect our family history.
