Yesterday, we had a festive trip out - a gathering of 5 for the #FifthDayOfChristmas with @ange_harker @lorencafferty @katiescribbles - to see the excellent printmakers’ exhibition @rheged_centre and to celebrate Loren and Katie’s surprise pre-Christmas wedding, which made the front page of the Cumberland & Westmorland Herald. Looking forward to celebrating it all together (hopefully) in glorious sunshine and long light in May. Hard to imagine a fine May evening this week. Nala has been very sad about the ongoing stormy weather and would very much like a bit of a break from it, as would we all. In a bookish way, especially interesting to see the lino and sketches for the covers of Maggie O’Farrell’s novels #Hamnet and #TheMarriagePortrait in the exhibition, by Cally Conway. On the fifth day of Christmas I received a gift from Mama 🎶🎄🥰 This morning I was getting worried about my peace light flame going out sooner than I'd like, so I started searching the house for candles. The only ones that seemed suitable were white tapered candles, which left me looking for a way to hold them properly. I was starting to brainstorm how to make things work without a candle holder, and then I ran across the most perfect votive holder that had a brand new tea light in it. This nativity scene holder belonged to Mama. Years ago I missed it during the Christmas clean up and stuck it in a cabinet when I found it too late to get it back in the proper box. Years later, it appears at the perfect time. The flame lit from the grotto in Bethlehem now sits in Mama's nativity candle holder, and it's the best Christmas gift ever. You better believe I got to the store for more votive candles as soon as I could! The goal is to have this lit through the Christmas season. Most blessed 5th day of Christmas Feast day of St Thomas Becket! Pray for us! SAINT THOMAS BECKET was born about 1119 or 1120 according to later tradition in Cheapside, London, on 21 December. His studies were taken in London, eventually at Saint Paul’s Cathedral and later in Paris. He began to earn his living for a clerk for Theobald, Archbishop of Canterbury. He served as Theobald’s emissary to Rome and continued studies in canon law in Italy. Theobald recommended him to King Henry II who appointed him to the post of Lord Chancellor in 1155 and in that post proved himself thoroughly faithful to Henry and the rights of the monarchy. Becket was nominated as Archbishop of Canterbury and was confirmed in 1162 by a royal council of bishops and noblemen. After his ordination to priesthood and the episcopacy a rift grew between Henry and Becket as the new archbishop resigned his chancellorship and sought to recover and extend the rights of the archbishopric, leading to continued conflicts with the King. These included the jurisdiction over English clergymen, which Becket reserved to the ecclesiastical courts. Henry II presided over the Councils of Clarendon Palace in 1164, which sought less clerical independence and a weaker connection with Rome. Becket opposed the Constitutions and refused to sign the documents. Becket was convicted of contempt of royal authority and malfeasance in the Chancellor’s office. Convicted on the charges, but then fled to France. Becket was in favor of excommunicating Henry, but Pope Alexander III urged diplomacy and in 1170, Alexander sent delegates to impose a solution to the dispute. Henry offered a compromise that would allow Thomas to return to England from exile. In November 1170 Becket excommunicated three bishop who attempted to crown Henry’s son king.
