The similarities are clear: In times of national and international turmoil, it often becomes the role of historians to highlight important parallels between the momentous events of the past with those of the present. As in the rest of America, Idaho's youth are calling their nation and state to stop the genocide of innocent Palestinians. They realize that Hamas systematically murdered 1200 or more Israeli and foreign citizens, yet they understand that systematically killing any one group is genocide, be they Jewish or Muslim. They realize, as does this historian of genocide, that too frequently populations that have been the victims of genocide often attempt to exterminate other groups to "ensure" it never happens to their people again. I do not speak of Jewish people or all Israelis, a great many of them too are against this genocide. I speak of the Israeli government. These protestors now call our collective hearts and minds to action in order to make our government cease the sale of weapons of mass destruction to an Israeli government and military currently perpetrating genocide. And so, I turn to the youth of the 1960s and 70s in America and Idaho. They took a stand at great personal risk to their physical safety and their future prospects to say Vietnam was wrong. They witnessed children burned by napalm manufactured by Dow Chemical and called it a national crime. They stood up to power when it wasn't popular to do so. They were joined by veterans who also said America's actions were wrong. In negatively impacting the core power structures of the nation, they helped lead the world to peace. They are doing this now at Jefferson and 6th Streets, on the grounds of the Old Ada County Courthouse. This is a huge moment in history where Idaho's youth are standing up and saying genocide is wrong. MAY 4 #KentStateShooting 1970- On 30 Apr 1970, US President Richard #Nixon announced the expansion of the already unpopular #VietnamWar into Cambodia. Criticism of the plan was harsh and widespread, as opponents believed it only worsened the conflict and violated Cambodian sovereignty, and protests began at university campuses across the US. #KentState University, located in Kent, #Ohio, held its first #protest over the expansion on 1 May which culminated in a vandalistic attack against police cars. The next day, officials and businesses received threats which ultimately led the mayor of Kent requesting the National Guard be sent to the town. #Protests occurred over the next few days with the Ohio Governor Jim Rhodes calling the student protestors “worse than the brown shirts”. #OTD, about 1300 protestors began gathering on the university’s Commons for a protest at noon. Companies A and C, 1-145th Infantry and Troop G of the 2-107th Armored Cavlary of the Ohio National Guard, who had arrived the previous day, approached the crowd and asked the crowd to disperse via a bullhorn. The students ignored the warning. The NG followed up by launching tear gas towards the crowd. This pushed the crowd back but did not disperse it. At this point, 96 soldiers with rifles affixed with bayonets began advancing. More tear gas was fired directly into the crowd to which the protestors responded by tossing stones at the soldiers. The students retreated out of the Commons area over Blanket Hill and moved NE. The guardsmen followed and entered into a fenced corner on an athletic field facing a parking lot which many students were dispersing across. The guardsmen began discussing their next course of action when about 50 students tossed rocks at them from the parking lot. #Soldiers from Troop G were ordered to aim their weapons at the lot when an officer fired a handgun into the air to trigger a retreat back over Blanket Hill with protestors following. At 12:24pm, guardsmen at the back of the retreating column turned, knelt and raised their weapons at the unarmed crowd. ⬇️💀Read of this egregious incident in the comments💀⬇️
