To be clear: Boycotts like this rarely work and if organised are just used to justify themselves. If you want to spread word on how bad a thing is (I.e., the director has done crimes {Looking at you Alexander Payne}) go off, but arranging a boycott has really not worked out. It’s limp wristed liberal ‘vote with your dollar’ rhetoric. You need a greater level of organisation and direct action to actually make an impact on anything like this and the problem is for an MNC this stacks exponentially.
Instead of “bodies needed,” let’s use “people needed.” I have a bone to pick with “bodies.” I don’t know if it’s some academic carryover or what, but it feels very gross to me. We are talking about people, not just bodies. This is capitalist and colonial logic, it paints us just as “bodies” to go into the meat grinder, to serve as arrestable currency, or as automatons who can’t think, feel, and have complex motivations. As Palestinian solidarity encampments pop up across dozens of U.S. college campuses, UTD’s own Gaza Liberation Plaza joined a long running student-led campaign of activism calling for cease-fire and divestment. On the same day Gaza Liberation Plaza was created, state troopers and local law enforcement arrived on campus, destroyed the encampment and arrested the students, staff, alumni and community members within. In total, 21 individuals were arrested and taken to Collin County Jail May 1, where a standing order from Collin County Magistrate Lisa Bronchetti prevented volunteer attorneys from bailing out the arrested individuals that night. A sit-in protest was held outside the lobby doors of the jail for the entire night. The first detainee would be released at 11:40 a.m. May 2, and the final detainee would be released by 4:30 p.m. Multiple groups have created letters and petitions criticizing the arrests and forceful takedown of the encampment. Neither the Office of Communications nor the Office of the President have replied to The Mercury’s request for comment. Eighteen students and three professors were arrested after state troopers and local police stormed UTD’s “Gaza Liberation Plaza” protest encampment at 4 p.m. May 1. Officers transported the detainees to Collin County Jail, where they will remain at least until May 2. Protests demanding the release of the 21 individuals began at 7 p.m. outside the county jail. By 9 p.m., over 150 demonstrators from UTD and the local community arrived on jail property. Nesren Abdelaziz, mother of one of the arrested students, said she and her family arrived at the county jail at 7 p.m and began demonstrations alongside other protesters, including songs, chants and prayers inside the lobby before police moved them out of the building. “My 18-year-old son got arrested on UTD campus, he was literally not even part of the encampment, just walking on the sidewalk,” Abdelaziz said. “I have been here since the beginning. We waited around in the lobby a little bit before they kicked us out … My little girls tried to use the restroom, but the officers would not let them use the restrooms. Injustice all around us here.” The attorneys said the presiding Collin County Magistrate, Lisa Bronchetti, had barred individuals charged with criminal trespassing from being released on an attorney appearance bond. All 21 arrested individuals have been charged with a Class B Criminal Trespass misdemeanor and must pay a $350 fine each to be released, which the attorneys have already prepared. Students established a solidarity encampment with Gaza at the Chess Plaza, surrounded by walls made of cardboard, plywood and tires with a sign reading “Free Palestine: all the walls will fall.” State and local police forces arrived 4 p.m., tearing down the encampment and arresting students and professors less than 12 hours after the encampment’s creation. At 11:40 a.m., around 100 people were present inside the encampment, which spanned the width of the Chess Plaza and blocked pedestrian access through the area. At 11 a.m., Associate Professor of History Ben Wright led protesters in a “read-in,” where the group silently read three articles and discussed them, after which another student read a poem. The encampment spread out from Chess Plaza at 4 p.m., moving east as state troopers arrived to barricade the plaza from the west, blocking protesters from leaving the grounds of the original camp. As of 5 p.m., two snipers were observed on a nearby building’s rooftop and Richardson Fire Department pickup trucks transported the torn-down encampment’s remnants away from campus. Here are some tips I've learned from over the years of protesting. 🔻(If you don't agree with it, I personally don't care because the government has obviously brain washed you & you can't even think for yourself, go ahead and unfollow me!) 🌟Protesting Pro tips to doing it on campus: •Wear a mask (n95 or respirators you can even get one with a face shield) •Eye protection! •Getting sprayed or even someone getting sprayed near you if it's windy it will spread. •Vaseline around your eyes can help protect from mace and pepper spray •Milk soaked in a towel or on face to help with being but wash your eyes with water! Water for your eyes to help if you sprayed. •Wear clothes that hide your tattoos but also covering your skin will help with getting pepper sprayed. •Write down medications & numbers just in case! •If you have bright hair or unique hair cover it! •Let someone you trust know where you are going just incase you get arrested. Also don't speak to cops if you are arrested, they have to have a reason. •Back up or power bank for phones. •Carry a flashlight and a first aid kit if possible. •Drink water & carry it! •Don't speak to any media, unless it's someone you know and trust them not give your info or distort your voice. •Don't debate with counter protestors it's not worth it & most want a reaction! •Green hats are the law students if you get arrested have a friend give them your info if your arrest, you have a right to medical and a lawyer. •Stay united they won't silence us! #freepalestine #protestingtips #protesting #standup #standwithpalestine #freedomofspeech #ceasefirenow

At the climax of a nearly 10-hour long demonstration April 23, representatives from Students for Justice in Palestine and UTD’s Cabinet of the President agreed to a meeting to discuss the concerns of Palestinian students. During the meeting April 26, SJP representatives delivered a letter to Benson, refusing to speak with him, before leaving.
