Tending sweetgrass 💚 A few years ago I was inspired to buy some sweetgrass seed, maybe after reading braiding sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer (for like the tenth time 😉), or maybe after talking with @carinalyall about who (which plants) we smudged with. Perhaps it was after I heard Linda Black Elk deliver the most powerful presentation at a plant consciousness conference. Or maybe even it was sweetgrass herself who called me into relationship through the sowing of seed. I guess they all played their part in getting me here. I sowed a whole packet and only a few germinated. They have grown in this one pot ever since. Today on noticing this years green making a start I decided to split the grass between two pots. To give her more space - as you can see from photo 3 the pot was full of root. I am not yet her apprentice, maybe I am, maybe I will never be. But I KNEW the pot needed splitting. Once she has settled I will go sit with her. I have never harvested the blades, or smouldered them. I know something, many things no doubt, come before that, one of which clearly is patience. This! Blue blue sky. I am so fickle, it doesn't take much to boost my spirits 😁 Just got in from a walk, I never take my phone, I prefer just to be, but that of course leaves me with no photos 😂 Still it was the joy of sunshine on my skin and hundreds of birds singing away that has made me feel so alive. The other trick I have up my sleeve is revealed in the second photo - wild leaves. Just nibbling on a single leaf does something magical to me. Wakes me up and reminds me who I am. I was writing about the incredible world of lichen today. Neither plant nor fungus but a mutually beneficial symbiosis of the two. Lichens, Usnea especially, are indicators of air pollution, they fail to grow where pollution is heavy. Interesting that Usnea is also a medicine for the lungs, the parts of our bodies that feel it most when we are exposed to air pollution. So much abundance, so many colours 😍 Had to go to Cheltenham today, a much bigger town than Stroud. Thought I might as well mooch around the shops, see if I can pick off a little early Christmas present shopping 🎁 Within minutes I gave up 😂😂 Everything looked so silly and pointless, so I rushed home to walk my dog and immerse myself in true beauty instead. 🍁🍂🍃🍄 In the natural world everything has meaning. So much so that everything is the wrong word! As each of the plants, each animal, each insect, each bird, each mushroom can never be a thing, more a non-human person. Checking in, skin on skin, feeling good. Did you know there are bacteria (mycobacterium vaccae) in the soil that trigger the release of the neuro transmitter, seratonin in the brain? Seratonin as you probably know helps regulate sleep and mood, so a proper worthy reason to get your hands dirty! Been gathering Yarrow for smudge today 💖 I know I only spoke about working with indigenous and naturalised plants for making your own smudge a few weeks ago. However I feel it is so important that we all take it on board. I have burned Yarrow as part of a mix on charcoal before but never made smudge sticks with her. So it's an experiment for me, with a project spanning the next year in mind. Get out there and gather some local aromatic plants. Tie them together and make your own smudge sticks. As you do so you will fall into deeper relationship with the land that you are part of. The land you stand upon. Wow, what a summer it has been. More a whirlwind for me, especially as we got to August. Looking forward to things starting to slow down again now we are in September. I have an office filled with drying elderberries, nettle seed and calendula flowers and there will be more to come if this weekend remains dry! Hey folks, I have just received so many new followers over the last couple of weeks I thought it would be a good time to say hi and do a bit of an intro for those of you new to me 😁 My work is all about encouraging and empowering people to get to know native and naturalised plants on multiple levels. To connect with local medicines. With wild plants. To rekindle your own innate wildness. And to build a more kincentric approach into your way of being. Recognising the plants as relatives and ancestors. Sharing tools for making those connections so that plants can become allys and mentors. Being able to ask the plants directly and hear what they are saying back to you - accessing their unique points of view. This is the work I came here to do. I share through my books, ceremonies, online and in-person courses/ events. I live in gloucestershire with my husband and 2 year old springer spaniel, but we are often off in our camper van on adventures. I love tending to my allotment and foraging for food and medicines from my generous relatives. I love walking barefoot and the touch of fresh rain on my face. The smell of moss and the joy of finding a patch of fresh mushrooms. The wind in my hair and it's gentle caress on my skin. I hope we get to know each other in this space. Well I wasn't expecting this! Not the beautiful geometry of this unfurling foxglove, or being floored by illness for the whole of my birthday week!! Last Thursday I visited a pharmacy with what I suspected was a scratched cornea, since then I have bounced around the NHS services - 111, A&E, eye casualty and GP. I am happy to say both I and my eye have survived, with gratitude to the NHS 😁👀💖 However instead of lake swimming and sauna with girlfriends and kayaking with husband and dog, to celebrate my birthday I have spent the week in a darkened room with shooting pains down my optic nerve and blistering sores on my face 🤢 Luckily I finally feel I am getting to the other side of it - look I'm back into insta for a start!! Going to be taking things easy for a while though. Sometimes our bodies have great wisdom. Sometimes we have no choice but to listen. Again and again this year I am being asked to just be. Not even plan, not even think. Like I am waiting or preparing subconsciously for something. Rest is not a natural pose for me, but I am learning. The hedgerows are still peaking round here even if the cow parsley is now a little over. I was really pleased to see this guelder rose in a hedgerow that was planted in the local play park a couple of years ago. Now flowering beautifully guelder rose (viburnum opulus) also known as cramp bark provides medicine for, you guessed it, cramps!! Most often used for menstrual cramps the powdered bark is an anti-inflammatory which also reduces pain. Dearest hawthorn and thus you return! First offering nutrition and cleansing with your nutty leaves, and now medicine for the heart and soul with your blooms. Hawthorn has up kept their side of the sacred contract that lies unspoken between the two-leggeds and the vegetal realm (by returning this springtime), and now we must keep ours. As humans our duty is to admire Hawthorn throughout the seasons, to accept the offers of food and nutrition, also the offers of medicine and wisdom. It is also written into the sacred contract that we must express our love and gratitude to this being whenever we are near. I think a new caveat should be added, that we ensure each plant has a space to grow unhindered by our activities. As long as the contract is followed, then all will be well with the world. We shall live in balance with our plant kin, the rain will continue to fall and the sun continue to shine. This is all that really matters... There is a new level of awareness awakening within me this spring. With every emerging leaf I pass, it is as if I drop deeper into a dream. But it is not a dream. Look at this beautiful basket of abundance! My intention was to harvest nettle to process into something for my workshop in a couple of weeks. I couldn't resist a few strands of tricorn leek too, as I noticed that they are about to burst into flower. But as is the way when honouring our plant relations, in this circumstance honouring their abundance by harvesting to make food and medicine for sharing. I got so much more from the exchange... I have been getting into my head recently, worrying about the flow of money, just as the machine had planned for me, for us all. But dear nettle just reminded me that I do not do this work, live this life, for material abundance. But to share my passion and joy for the true nature of reality. That is my driver, always has been. Sharing and opening eyes to the truth. There has always been food on my table and wood in my fireplace, I just have to open my door and the abundance of nutrition and nurture offering themselves in the body of plants is astounding. Gathered these little spring beauties for my tea, while out with my dog. They were so pretty I wanted to photograph them, but as Barns picked with me he wanted to be in the picture too 😂😂 If you separate your wild flowers and leaves, eating one at a time, there is no need for salad dressing, the flavours are so diverse and full. What is on my plate? Three corner leek, wild currant flowers, dandelion leaves, lungwort leaves, hawthorn leaves, bramble buds, primrose flowers and some wild oregano leaf to complete the array of bitters. As the sun sets on one year we trust that tomorrow it will rise on another. 🌄 This has been a challenging year for me. December, just in case I hadn't quite got the message yet (and to be fair I hadn't) was a complete stripping back to the essentials. There is little I need to carry forward into next year. As soon as I began to see it clearly and drop my excess baggage, new ventures, light and opportunity began to form on the horizon. 👣 So it is with a big jolly hurrah and a thank goodness, that I close the door on 2022. Already I feel lighter, more streamlined and more focused as the hours count down towards 2023. ⏰ It just remains for me to extend my gratitude to each one of you. Another total plant obsession for me, Monkey Puzzle tree (Araucaria araucaria) 😍 I wrote a whole chapter on monkey puzzle in my second book (20 amazing plants & their practical uses). This tree is slow growing but so beautiful and so different from the other trees we normally see here in the UK. Of course monkey puzzle is an exotic, originally from Chile, maybe why so different from our oaks, ashes and beeches. 🍃 The seeds or nuts are delicious if you ever get a chance to eat one go for it! There are male and female trees and you need one of each for the seeds to appear. In this collection of trees (and photos) you have both the male dangling cones and the female ones more rounded and swelling. This my friends, if you didn't already know, is Alder (Alnus glutinosa). A member of the birch family, and just like birch, a pioneer species. Alder is relatively short lived at up to 150 years but supports an incredible 45 species of mycorrhizal fungi! It has both male and female flowers on the same tree, swipe to see both. The bark can be decocted for use as a gargle or mouth wash for sore /inflamed mouth, throat, gums. Or you could make a bark poultice for skin conditions such as eczema, infected wounds, burns. The associated symbolism for this tree includes release, determination, inner-confidence. It is also said that Alder can help you face up to things you have been avoiding while granting access to the faery realms. So why am I telling you this? I know I don't usually share plant /tree profiles. Well Alder came to my attention earlier this year through a student of mine who was called to work with Alder. I realised that I knew nothing about Alder at all, I was not even 100% sure what ki looked like at the time. Isn't it amazing to discover a personality who has been there all along, hidden in plain sight?! I'm sure I never noticed Alder before for a reason, I'm equally sure Alder has popped into my conscious awareness now because it is time for us to meet. Trust in the timings I reckon. Well elderflower makes me happy, can you tell?! I have been waiting to dip fully in to elder season. I was on a 28 day Nettle diet until Sunday and needed a pause in between. Not to say you can't work with Nettle and elderflower together, they make a lovely pair, but when you have been really deep with a single plant you need to clear before you can begin with someone else. And today was the day! Elder in my water bottle, my teapot and scattered over my salad.
