Haaapppy weekend!! What a glorious few days we’ve had this week! The dogs have loved our early morning yomps in the fields - the last two photos show their differing levels of energy when we get back 😊. The sun has brought out the first foxgloves (self-seeded), camassias and geums. The Sicilian alliums (second pic) are just starting to open - they’re really impressive when they’re in full flower but I’ve only got a few, so think I need to invest in some more this autumn. The astrantias and aquilegias are all in full bloom and there are plenty of phlox, thalictrums and roses on the way. Well, the new rain gauge says we got over 75mm in three days while we were away! 🌧️😬 Not surprising when there was lots of flooding further south! ‘Poodles n Poppies’ With the Spring Equinox and 12 hours of daylight now, things in the garden get busy- so here’s Bert with a simple message- take time to smell the flowers (even if they have little to no fragrance like this camellia 😂). Plus a little clip from the weekend- we’d just planted out some Amazing Grey poppies, each with their own little bed of grit ( as we have some courtesy of the meconopsis which fell on the floor) and the rain started again! Kanske är det "bara" ett växthus, men vi kallar det orangeri. Jag vet inte var gränsen går eller vad definitionen för orangeri är? Hundarna övervakade den första planteringen av potatis, som ska få växa i odlingstunneln för att få tidig skörd och sedan planteradesnågra tomater om och nya såddes. 🌿 Hundarna växlade solningen mellan kökstrappan och sängen i orangeriet. Himla valde dock korgstolen för att få ha sitt tuggben i fred för Zally som käkade upp sitt snabbt. A beautiful sunny Saturday morning - best start to the day we’ve had, weather-wise, in weeks. The dogs and I had a glorious muddy yomp over the fields first thing and then I checked out whether any of the bulbs I planted a few years ago, had survived. Very happy to see all the different varieties of muscari coming through, there are some chionodoxa, and the daffodils are still in full bloom. Some of the tulips and wallflowers are also in bud. Almost makes up for all the plants I’ve lost while I was in Rabat - one of the bamboos, the camellia, all the agapanthus, possibly my hydrangea and magnolia, among others. Tackled weeding one of the tomato beds in the tunnel garden this morning 🍅💚😮💨 Thank goodness for the tarp we put over the top for shade while weeding! It’s given me a much better system and motivation to get on with it 😬😊 1. Green tomatoes coming on but I don’t think I’m going to be getting my usual 20-30kg for sauce making this year! 😕 2. Sprouting garlic that was missed in the harvest, divided up and replanted through the tomato bed 🧄 3. & 4. Marigolds planted along the front of the tomato bed 5. Faithful garden hound likes the shade too! 🐾😂 6. Finished weeding, this bed has tomatoes, spring onion, nasturtium, perennial leeks, runner beans, and I just planted garlic, cat mint, garlic chives and marigolds in it as well 😊💚 7. The runner beans have taken off already! 🫘 8. A lovely rainy 16°C today (the weather is up and down like a flippin’ yo-yo at the moment!) 🌧️💚 In order to get out in garden, after not being able to the past couple of days, I decided to tackle the overgrown mess that is the tunnel garden. We’d rigged up a shade tarp for hot weather but it works for rain too! 😬 I find it really difficult to keep on top of the tunnel garden in summer because it just has perfect conditions for enormous weeds, and they grow so fast and then it’s hard to get in there without being covered by weed seed or wet weeds 😝 I don’t like weeding at the best of times, but it seems a bit easier in the open? 🥴 and it seems like an endless cycle of weeding sometimes, you just get one bit done then it’s back to square one a week later 🤦🏻♀️ So first of all I cut down all the tall, in my face, weeds with my trusty hedge trimmer so it seems more open and manageable at least 😉 Then I got myself a comfy seat and started on pulling out the roots. It really wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be as I had covered most of the beds with cardboard ages ago. Lots of slugs though! The boys 🐶 🐕 and I have spent a lot of time in the garden this weekend .. This morning I cleaned the greenhouse inside and out - first proper spring clean in a couple of years. I’ve also continued the job of weeding / de-grassing the beds in the back garden. The pictures are a few ‘before and after’ shots - usually the weedy beds are the befores, but this is the result of two growing seasons without any real attention. But I’m seeing the daffodil and tulip shoots coming up among the weeds, so I’m hoping they’ll look as good as they used to. How nice to be pottering around the garden in just a jumper this afternoon and not be absolutely freezing?! I'm just checking that we're all ready for any stormy situations coming our way - it's already pretty breezy, and as we have a number of little greenhouses and polytunnels, I don't want to lose any! Especially as many are now housing fledgling seeds! I've also moved some brave and strong snowdrops that force their way up every year, despite being in the flightpath of the spaniel and being repeatedly squished. Some have gone into little terracotta pots to sit around the porch for the time being and some into the borders. Planting, planting and more planting! 🌱🌱🌱😊 I bought some advanced seedlings from a few nurseries the other day: tomatoes, capsicums and an eggplant, and with today’s cool, overcast weather with misty rain just started, I got lots done! Usually I like growing from seed, but there’s no harm in buying seedlings or advanced plants if it makes your life easier! 😉 I have both in this year and they’re all going well 💚 I’ve planted those outside the tunnel garden along with Dill, Chervil, Blue Spice Basil and Yarrow herb seedlings. It’s not really the weather for it, but the dogs and I have been in the garden this morning … There’s a lot to do - the beds are overgrown and full of weeds and brambles, as are the pots. And the greenhouse needs a good clean. But I’ve put my Christmas gardening gloves to work and have made a start on clearing the raised beds - with Brian’s help. He is such a gardening dog - he was digging and rolling in the compost (you can see the bits of soil on his face in the last photo), much to Leo’s bemusement. Dug over the garlic bed now we’ve harvested it, with a little help from my furry friend! 😂🐾💚😅 Found a few bonus garlic bulbs and potatoes too, most of which I’ve left to grow again. I tend to get stuck ruminating over and over about what I’m going to plant, and how I’m going to go about planting it 🤦🏻♀️ which usually leads to weeds taking over again before I make the decision! In the case of this garden bed, I’ve already earmarked it for sweet potatoes because it is really well draining, but the dilemma was whether or not I add compost now before planting 🧐 as the compost batch isn’t ready yet, but the sweet potatoes need to be in the ground! Then I realised that over the past couple of years, I’ve added plenty of organic sugarcane mulch which has completely broken down, so it should be fine to plant them now and add cured compost or mulch later 😉 So I’ve forked over the bed using my new, you-beaut massive gardening fork (now named Vlad the Impaler 😆) and the garden hound, and cleared out the re-sprouting weeds! 💪 It’s gotten too hot now, 🥵☀️but I’ve got 4 healthy sweet potatoes potted up which I will plant this evening when it cools off 😮💨 Now I’ve just got to decide what companion plants I’ll plant with them! 🤦🏻♀️😆😬 #gardendreaming #bugsgrubsandslugs #adhdgardening #ruralgardening #coolclimategarden #gardening #organicgardening #organic #gardeningaustralia #xenawarriorprincesshound #happydog #dogslife #gardeningdogs #gardenhound #diggingdog #adhdstruggles

No matter what the weather, Jaxon never lets it prevent him from being in the garden. Personally, I also enjoy frosty mornings, and I certainly prefer them over the current rainy ones ☔️
It is with such heart break to post that my beautiful baby boy and best gardening companion has passed away. Yesterday his big heart just couldn't cope anymore. I had to make the tough decision to let him go so he wasn't suffering anymore. I held him until he fell to sleep telling him how much I loved him. He was the best boy ever and gave me so much love it's unreal. I am lost without him by my side and always will be. The vet told me he had the most enlarged heart he'd ever seen. This I can believe because I know he had the biggest heart ever that was full of my love towards him and him too me! I was determined to get the Globe Artichokes planted this morning! 🌱 I decided to not put cardboard down as the grass had mostly been killed off anyway. Instead, I weeded the remaining bits and put lime and blood and bone on, plus a small amount of compost on (which is all I had left!) I had grown some ‘Imperial Star’ green thornless artichokes and some ‘Purple’ artichokes from seed, which germinated pretty quickly. 🌱 I’ve planted them alternately at the back of this new bed, and then sowed a row of mixed carrot seed: ‘Paris Market’, ‘Purple Dragon’ and an Heirloom mix, then a row of Beetroot seed: ‘Golden Globe’ and ‘Cylindra’ 😊 Then partially mulched (ran out of mulch…), watered and covered with netting to keep the chickens off 🐓 Of course the garden hound just wanted to lay right where I was working 🐾🤦🏻♀️ but she gave up and found some shade in the end!
