It's great to see Shepherdia argentea - Buffaloberry seeds that I collected from a plant in Astana Botanical Garden, Kazakhstan last summer germinating. I've been looking for this nitrogen fixing shrub with edible fruits for many years. It can thrive in harsh conditions, tolerating poor soil, drought, and even cold down to -45°C (-49°F)! This makes it a great candidate for planting in dry areas or for erosion control. Another interesting fact is that the silver buffaloberry is dioecious. This means that there are separate male and female plants. If you want the plant to produce its tart but delicious berries, you'll need to have both a male and female plant within pollinating distance of each other. The berries are a great source of vitamin C and can be eaten fresh, dried, or made into jellies and jams. I don’t know whether they’ve been inspired by the recent reopening of the #cameliahouse @wentworth_woodhouse but my rescue camellias have finally decided to bloom - the first time the pink one has in 3 years. We picked them up in pots from someone’s garden who was moving and leaving them & want to get them all in the ground eventually. The pale pink was the first to go in the ground because it was the one with nothing to lose having never flowered so I’m taking this as a #gardeningwin

We saved both Dahlia and Gladiolia seeds from our garden flowers last year, but we didn't know if either would be mature enough. But I went to switch the lights on today and was surprised with at least 6 dahlia plants and 2 glad spikes! The exciting thing is that every plant is a new variety, so we don't know what they will grow into until they flower at the end of the season! An impulse buy—a tomatillo that promised purple fruit—plus two orphans of the green variety. I planted all of them. I don’t love tomatillos. The tomatillos could sense it. I checked them infrequently. When I checked the husks were empty. Benign neglect produced a tangle that spread beyond the bed and across the yard, as the plants set down roots, scaled fences. And still, the husks were like the ill-fitting men’s suit jackets I favored back in the new wave days. Insects were moving in. I didn’t necessarily want tomatillos, and I was angry that there weren’t any. Soon searches for ripe fruit were releasing clouds of white flies. Even without fruit the plants, I decided, had done their job: sending out roots, aerating the soil and keeping it moist, donating organic material (pro tip: leave the roots in when the plants are done). The day I decided to remove the plants, I was met by a blaze of color—-a ripe purple tomatillo. Further investigation revealed a number of green tomatillos the insects had missed. This was heading for a metaphor. Perhaps an encouragement—I have to write a lot of words before I spot the purple tomatillo. All those extra sentences, pages, paragraphs can seem like empty husks. But writing them is the path, a prerequisite. They are the roots I leave in the ground, nothing is wasted. Pro tip: fully ripe tomatillos—eaten raw—don’t taste like tomatillos. Last night, it got down to 34°F and I couldn't bear the thought of one more large piece of laundry, lol, so I did not cover my garden. We've got a little bit of a warm-up happening this week too, so maybe that will churn out the rest of the fruits that are still on the plants! Check out my zucchinis! Today, I took off the netting and removed some of the poles in my garden. I want to be able to enjoy the marigolds that have been so vibrant since planting them. 💛🧡❤️ I can't see them as well with the net on so bye bye net! I harvested a ton more tomatoes today, and chucked several into the woods that had damage on them from slugs that infiltrated the garden. 🤢 Hopefully some critters can enjoy them! I have six baby zucchinis now and still many green tomatoes even though the plants are falling all over each other. There are even some tomato blossoms on plants that still look so healthy. 🤣 6 months of work has brought delicious lunches, dinners, and snacks into September and October. My garden is still going! I pulled a batch of tomatoes out this morning, and I forgot to post a batch that I harvested last week! My Norwex kitchen cloth is perfect for absorbing excess water while my tomatoes dry. Still not a single cherry tomato for all the plants I have. 🤣 I'm eyeing that purple Cherokee tomato and I hope it continues to grow and ripen! Harvested my first and probably only cucumber today! It was SO GOOD! I chopped it up and I'm going to make a salad with them tomorrow. 😍 I have not been good about keeping up with manually pollinating the cucumber flowers, so this cucumber makes me super happy. As for tonight, couple slices of cukes, couple slices of tomatoes, and sauteed zucchini with nutritional yeast on top. DELISH! After FIVE years, I finally grew a zucchini!!! We moved to Louisiana in 2017, and in 2018 I built my garden. Every single year for 3 years my squash plants were decimated by squash vine borers. No matter what I tried, they always killed my plants before I got a harvest. 2021, Hurricane Ida hit, we made a temporary move and I had no garden in 2022. This year, at in a new city in Louisiana, I planted 3 plants in a small bed. The heat was horrible, we have had almost no rain. I was getting female flowers that never turned into fruit. I started to hand pollinate but continued to struggle. I started to wonder if the high temps were not killing off the pollen. Turns out, thats exactly what then issue was. Our temps have been lower, and with continuing to hand pollinate, a fruit finally grew. This is one of those gardening wins that keep you going through all the garden struggles, even if its just a single fruit I get of this plant, it doesn’t matter. A zucchini grew😀

Not everything was a success this year....but my potatoes sure were. This is from 2 hills in my raised bed, and I dug them out by hand. In my raised bed I just use my Whitecourt Dirt Bags potting mix and home compost. This potato variety is Alberta Rose, grown year after year from my own seed potatoes after initially buying from Eagle Creek Seed Potatoes (soooo many varieties there). I'm happy to have atleast one win! Lol
It's a miracle! I harvested a tomato! These are San Marzanos and they are the seeds that outperformed everything else to the point of crowding, lol. There are more plum tomatoes that will be ready to be picked soon, and my beef steaks are still carrying along. 😁 Cherry tomatoes are few and far between and still all green. I have one cucumber that is doing great. No zucchinis at the moment since harvesting a great one earlier this week. All the other babies fizzled out. I also got curious about all the nuts falling from the tree that I've previously thought was a black walnut. It's a type of hickory tree instead! I think it's a bitternut, but still trying to investigate. Still part of the walnut family, but it won't be as potent with the chemical juglone. One zucchini is ready to pick, and another baby zucchini will probably be ready for pollination tomorrow maybe? The one that I suspected did not get pollinated enough fell off the plant on its own, lol. 😆 My sole cucumber is still doing great lol. When I pollinate the zucchini, I will pollinate any cucumber flowers that might be ready. My beef steaks still look like they are trying to turn red which is SO EXCITING! 😁 Some of the plum tomatoes look like they are turning too. Several of the plum tomato plants in the middle of the garden are falling over on themselves because they don't have enough support. Stems are still intact though, so yay for that. The one tomato all by itself is a purple tomato! This morning, while looking for beans to pick, I found a four leaf clover! 🍀 It appears the slugs found it too...do you think it's still lucky considering that one of the leaves is halfway gone now? Perhaps 3/4 as much? Currently pressing with some tissue paper in-between the pages of @themontydon 's wonderful book The Complete Gardener. We're supposed to have a bit of a heatwave here in the next few days with temperatures hitting the 90s, and the only reason I'm looking forward to it is because maybe it will make my tomatoes start turning red! I have five baby zucchinis now that are on pollination watch. FIVE! ON ONE PLANT. 🙌 My cucumber plant is totally taking off. 🥒 Tomatoes are chugging along with more beef steaks popping up, and more cherry tomato flowers. 🍅 It also seems like I might have what I believe is #septorialeafspot starting on some of the tomato leaves. From what I have researched, this is a fairly common fungus especially in high humidity. My plants are also crazy close together because I guess I had somewhat low expectations when I planted them, lol. 🤷 Since I put the netting on too, I have not been pruning or weeding anything because honestly, the mosquitoes are horrendous at all hours. So that's not helping the crowding either. I found a recipe that uses baking soda, olive oil, a tiny bit of dish soap and water that people said they had success with. I sprayed the tops and bottoms of leaves and I am hopeful it will help stop the spots from spreading further, and not adversely affect my garden. Either way, we're about to learn. Well, kind of a semi-bummer garden update. My zucchini is not going to get bigger, but all is not lost! I feel like this is blossom end rot from too much water. I don't believe this is a problem with pollination, even though I did it manually. It has been a very rainy summer, and I have tried to balance my own watering with it. August also hasn't been excessively hot like it usually is. None of my plants have ever looked like they were thirsty, so I'm going to scale way back on watering now. I cut it today and still could chop it up to saute most of it! There are baby zucchinis on the plant with flowers that haven't opened yet, so maybe now that the zucchini isn't there, it can focus its energy on those. We'll see! My marigolds have been popping with color for months and I haven't even acknowledged them! These are the only plants I bought when I planted my seedlings. Everything is still chugging along. I was hoping the zucchini would get a little bigger and I'm hoping the lighter color isn't a bad thing. Many tomatoes are present, so I hope they start turning soon! I have been mentioning beefsteak and plum tomatoes, but I also planted at least one purple tomato plant and that's what the flower in my first picture is. I made the mesh netting another 16 inches taller today. It's taller than me and now, it's a little difficult to maneuver, lol. I forgot to post an update yesterday showing that the cucumber flower opened and was ready for pollination. But....wait.....where...what the-..? One of my favourite wins this year has got to be these violas. I planted the same variety on the other side of the garden last year. Cheap annuals bought from @aldiuk and I took them out at the end of the season. I kept an eye out for more this year but they never came in, so I hung my head sadly and...well, I probably went and made a cup if tea. Fast forward to June 2023, when I planted the agapanthus in this pot, but left the outer edge empty. I dressed it with some @shell_on_earth but nothing else. Now, in August, look at the display that's appeared! Hundreds of THOSE violas, which I couldn't get hold of, have now self seeded....but from where?! I pulled them all up last year. And how have they spread in just this one pot?! #gardeningwin

This garden is a beast from every angle! 🙌 Today was fertilizer day! I have been using a fish emulsion fertilizer to keep it organic. One of my cucumber plants finally decided to thrive so it earned itself its own cage trellis. Baby Doug helped build it. 😻 Watching that one now along with my zucchinis for when it will be time to manually pollinate. After years of summer gardening in a furnace I still take it personally when things don’t grow. “It’s just an experiment,” I’ll shrug, when my plot is the best looking plot in the community garden. When it isn’t, I’ll pout. Was it low water pressure, poor timing, diseased plant starts? This summer, nothing grew. I refused to visit my stunted plants. For months. I gave up. Last week my partner, whom I’ve tasked with plot check (just in case), found three watermelon babies! Watermelons are hard to grow. And this is another way that writing is like gardening. When I set ideas aside, do something else for a while, sometimes, ideas resolve into stories I can brag about later. Good thing it doesn't need to be pretty to be functional! 😂 I added some height to my net with the trimmed piece of mesh that I took off when I initially put it up. The taller tomato plants now have more space to grow into! This garden has an add-on covering and mister system that connects directly to the garden base. I LOVED the look of it and really wanted to get it, but it was only available for preorder until late summer and I needed it sooner...but now that I've seen how these plants have taken off, I don't think it would be tall enough for these tomatoes! 🤯 This was a relatively cheap solution and has done exactly what I wanted (keep black walnut leaves and nuts from falling in/being buried by squirrels and keep hornworms and squash bugs out so far 🤞) and it has held up well enough in conjunction with my tomato cages to protect my plants in high winds.
