A good day and feeling okay so we went to the garden centre ‘for a look’… many ££s later, I came home with lots of lovely plants and a new colour scheme of oranges and blues for the front bed . Maybe I’ll get it finished tomorrow! I went into work for a few hours this morning and then came home to do a little work in the garden. My plan was to get my tomatoes and squash in the ground but that just didn’t happen. The rain has been so good for my garden but the mud just made it impossible to plant anything today without slipping and almost falling on my ass. Since it was too slick to plant, I went out and tried to salvage what I could of last years weed barrier that I just tore out of the garden. I cut it to the length I want and got it staked into place. That way all I have to do is cut a new hole for my plants before putting them into the ground. Then tonight I sat at our kitchen table and went through all my seeds and reorganized them all. Now I have some idea of what is where. Tomorrow’s plan….. Get tomatoes and squash seedlings planted and plant my bean/peas seeds. Then still have to figure out where I’m putting all my melon plants and pumpkins. Let the growing season officially begin…..well halfway. Spent five hours in my garden this morning fixing the cucumber trellis I put up last year and making a new one for this year. I planted seven kinds of cucumbers, seven cucamelon plants, mini bell and grand bell peppers, shishito and jalapeño peppers plus two mystery peppers, kale, two types of broccoli, and cauliflower. Next week it’s time to plant my many tomato plants, zucchini, a few types of squash, and herbs in the garden. Then have to figure out where I’m planting beans and how to plant my pumpkin and four types of melons I have. Hoping tomorrow is the big day!! I’m hoping to be able to get my plants in ground in my garden tomorrow. Do I have everything in order? Heck no! I still have to figure out a trellis system for my tomatoes, build a new trellis for my cucumbers, and fix the cucumber trellis from last season. Today I “built” a tall fence trellis for my cucamelons and dug up ground for most if not all my brassicas. My trellises may not look like much but from using only what I could find around the house this season, I think they are turning out pretty darn good (and they will do what I need them to do!). I’m getting more and more excited for this growing season! 💚🌸First time I’ve been able to get back to volunteering at @streamwalkgarden since my mum died in October, it seems unreal six months have passed. Feeling the benefits of the warmth and kindness of this community and the soul fuel of gardening. It’s looking lush, lots of lovely chemical free produce harvested and sold. Today I sewed kale, broccoli seed and beetroot this morning, and a catch up with pals over a coffee and homemade biscuits. The gardening space is in the heart of Whitstable. Visitors and volunteers can visit the garden to see the organically managed vegetable beds which demonstrate different ways of growing vegetables e.g. companion planting, Square Foot Gardening, using raised beds, green manures, mulching and no-dig methods. There are also beds of dye plants, herbal remedies and the garden offer all kinds of community workshops and much more. Yesterday @tallahasseec2 ,my son, helped me walk outside to my garden for the first time in months today. Picked some garlic, snow peas and swiss chard. A random neighbor I hadn’t met stopped to say hello and after learning I was recovering from stroke immediately volunteered to help with my garden this evening. I thought I had it all planned out….. I started planning my garden even before last growing season was over. I was so excited for everything I was going to grow this year! On a whim, I decided to “chaos garden” one of my raised beds. Well by doing that I threw my whole plan off course. Am I mad? Nope!! My chaos bed is growing and thriving. The garden is slowly coming together little by little each day! Today I dug up the back of the garden and planted corn. I put fine mesh over it in hopes that the birds, squirrels, and any other little friends don’t get the corn kernels before they can begin to grow! Next….figuring how to make my own trellis out of stuff I already have and where to put it! Am I going to regret it? My back/side has been bothering/hurting me for over a week and today it finally feels back to normal. So what does that mean? Going out and getting the garden ready of course!!! Pulled all the “weed be gone” covering up from last year and dug a few of the weeds out with the hand-tiller. Our soil has some clay mixed in so it’s pretty compacted and my side and back said enough for today! I’m happy with what I got done and it’s slowly coming together! Now to go get soil while it’s on sale and get the grow bags ready for transplanting my seedling in a couple of weeks! I can’t think of a better way to celebrate Earth Day than bringing families together to build a community garden. On Saturday, after many weeks of growing things from seed indoors, the Green Team at my son’s elementary school gathered to plant lettuce, arugula, kale, spinach, beets, peas, herbs, and native perennials. As we held fists of compost-rich soil, we talked about the benefits of growing your own food and creating a pesticide-free native garden that also serves as a wildlife habitat for pollinators. Kids high-fived garlic and carrot shoots they had planted in the fall and late winter and even the wee ones helped weed six beds with big dirt-smudged smiles. I’m so proud of this hard-working crew! Whenever I feel glum about global warming, and wonder if anything I do makes much of a difference, I turn to the next generation of earth keepers; their love of nature comforts the soul and fills me up with renewed energy and hope and I have no choice but to keep going. 🌱 #earthdayeveryday #gogreenteam #littlestewards #nativegarden #gardeningishealing #schoolgarden
