The fact that many groves of aspens are in reality single organisms connected underground causes the unified change of color that we witness. It’s not that a whole bunch of different trees are all turning at the same time, but rather that it’s just one tree that is much larger than it would appear. I love fall in the Rockies. AZT SOBO: The restart Late September of last year, I went back to sleeping, eating, laughing and hiking on the Arizona Trail – a continuing education of a thru-hiker. But the hike really started earlier in the Spring, when my knee gave out in my NOBO attempt after 125 miles or so. It didn’t feel good going home but I realized an eventual revenge hike would be infinitely sweeter. So I went back in the fall southbounding the trail. After many hours of none-stop travelling, including sleeping on a concrete bench outside of a Vegas casino overnight, I arrived at the northern terminus in a ride with Denise, a trail angel based in Page. Fortunately, the northern passages of the AZT are relatively flat. I spent my early days passing through beautiful aspen forests, goldened by the fall weather. Water sources were scarce but never a concern. The mornings were crisp but not too cold. Gently I built up my legs for the Grand Canyon section that was still to come. PS. Took me awhile to figure out how to flip @faroutguides map SOBO. Every now and then a shot comes along that I can’t explain why I love it so much- or maybe it’s just that the explanation is unique to me. This grove of Aspens along Last Dollar Road provided my favorite shot among many dramatic landscapes during our trip to Telluride. Maybe it’s the late afternoon light filtering through the most golden Aspen leaves I’ve ever seen. Maybe it’s the contrast of the white, straight Aspen trunks. Maybe it’s the texture of the grass and the perfectly imperfect back marks on the Aspen branches and trunks. Maybe it’s a combination of everything, but this shot just comes across so beautiful to me and holds a special place in my heart. I got to spend some time in the San Juan Mountains in Colorado. Such a beautiful location. While I spent most of my time with my loved ones, I did take some time for a few photos. I wouldn’t be me without my camera 😊. This photo was taken a little late into the fall colors but came with the added benefit of the snow-covered mountains. I could tell the clouds were going to light up, so I was searching for a location. I knew I wasn’t going to make it to the spot I wanted in time, but I found this place on the way.
