Gunga, a Hindu from Oudh and a Chaprasi (messenger) of No. 22 Astronomical Survey Party (of which Captain Sidney Burrard was in charge). Painted in the year 1894 by Gertrude Ellen Burrard. She was an English Woman and wife of Sidney Burrard, a British Indian Army Officer and Superintendent on the Trigonometrical Survey of India. She accompanied her husband across India in his official capacity. She was an amateur artist, she recorded the people and places that she encountered and exhibited her paintings for many years in India. Indians especially from poor backgrounds often found employment with the British officers. The Gora Sahebs as they would call them. A Chaprasi is usually an attendant or messenger working for an official. We don't know much about Gunga the person depicted in the painting. He looks to be in his 50s. It appears he was an honest and obedient employee. Admittedly, ‘Din’ (“Deen”) holds a special place for me as all the exteriors were filmed in Lone Pine’s Alabama Hills which holds a number of great tie-ins. My Dad wrote the book on the movies made there (aptly titled ‘On Location In Lone Pine’), ‘Din’ was William Goldman’s favorite (spawning his “Stupid Courage”), ‘Din’ was Director Richard Donner’s favorite, and I’d essentially meet both Goldman & Donner on their ‘Maverick.’ PS, ‘Din’ was remade as ‘Sergeants 3’ AND introduced us to Kali 45 Years before Indiana Jones went to The Temple Of Doom. . Pulled out an old favourite after a morning of cleaning and exercise. I had this on video for many many years and it’s one of my favourites but I only recently found it on DVD. Based on Rudyard Kipling’s two poems, “Gunga Din” and “Soldiers Three”, this film follows water boy Gunga Din (Sam Jaffe) who longs to be a British Indian soldier but because of his caste can only be a water boy. He follows the British Army unit which includes three sergeants - Cutter (Cary ❤️ Grant), MacChesney (Victor McLagen) and Ballantine (Douglas Fairbanks Jnr - whose second autobiography I just read) who love getting into scrapes and fights. The three sergeants are sent to investigate broken signal wires after emergency alerts are sent and encounter a band of Thuggees led by Chota (Abner Biebermen) and have to fight their way out of town. Gunga Din then warns them of a planned mass uprising by the Thugees and they all set off to the cult’s temple to stop it. Also starring Joan Fontaine as a love interest for Ballantine, this was the second highest grossing film of 1939, second only to “Gone With the Wind”, starring Fontaine’s sister Olivia de Havilland (both of whose biographies I’ve recently purchased but have yet to read). I’ve been reading a lot more these days- and this morning, I just finished this one. PT 105 by Dick Keresey, her former Captain. For starters, if you were unaware (not that you care)- my account is named after the PT Boat. They’ve been a long time interest of mine, having had a PBR Boat Captain dad, and having been a small boat coxswain myself in the Marines. The book is a welcome departure from PT 109, or “They Were Expendable”. In fact, Dick was a member of Motor Torpedo Squadron Five (MTBRON 5). One of his shipmates was none other than JFK. In his words- “Long ago I stopped talking about her (PT 105) because, when I said that I’d been the captain of PT 105, people asked “Oh, is that so? Did you know Jack Kennedy?” Sure, I knew Jack Kennedy, a nice guy, but I never seemed to get the conversation beyond him. So I thought, why bother, leave her to the historians. Now, I’ve changed my mind.” One passage in particular gripped my imagination- it had me longing for a time machine. It described a hot break from contact with Japanese shore guns after a dawn raid- “For a brief moment, I too, ignored the shell fire and sensed only this splendid boat, racing flat out. The sea that day was perfect for speed: small, choppy waves helped the hull break the surface tension, so that little but her props and rudders were in the water. She skimmed over the surface without a bounce or tremor, her engines screaming their wonderful, giant-tomcat howl, and her guns chattering into the smoke astern and the nearby shore.” I could picture the sight- wide open, .50s barking, flying through their own smoke, three Packard V-12s roaring… 🖤 The poem on slide two was written by Keresey’s XO, Joe Roberts about him- his nickname being “Gunga Dick” of the Kipling poem fame (Gunga Din). On this day in history 01/24/24. In 1939 the Adventure film “Gunga Din”, starring Cary Grant, Victor McLaglen, and Douglas Fairbanks Jr. was released. Loosely based on the 1890 poem of the same name by Rudyard Kipling combined with elements of his 1888 short story collection Soldiers Three. The film is about three British sergeants and Gunga Din, their native bhisti (water bearer), who fight the Thuggee, an Indian murder cult, in colonial British India. The film earned $1,507,000 in the United States and Canada and $1,300,000 elsewhere, but because of its high production cost, it recorded a loss of $193,000. The film was the sixth highest-grossing film nationally in 1939; however, in the ten states of Indiana, Ohio, Nebraska, Montana, Idaho, Utah, Pennsylvania, Alabama, Mississippi, and South Carolina, it was the third highest-grossing film, coming only behind Gone with the Wind. Cinematographer Joseph H. August was nominated for an Academy Award for Best Cinematography, Black-and-White. In 1999, the film was deemed “culturally significant” by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Noe you know. It may be The Greatest Picture You’ve Never Seen. . Or even heard of? . If you know, you know, but too few do so I showcase every chance I get. Sure, it came out in 1939 (arguably Movies’ Greatest Year) and was overshadowed by at least ‘Gone With The Wind’ (though this was 2nd in Box Office that year, saving RKO Studios). . ‘Gunga Din’ . And are we all pronouncing it DEEN as Rudyard Kipling’s Original Poem does? . It’s a Movie that almost didn’t exist. It all but created “The Buddy Picture.” It’s William Goldman’s favorite – spawning the Title of his first Novel: ‘The Temple Of Gold’ – and it’s Richard Donner’s favorite, spawning a scene in ‘Lethal Weapon 3’ and his shooting ‘Maverick’ in Lone Pine’s Alabama Hills (BECAUSE ‘Din’ had been shot there); and, sure, it holds a special place for me as Dad literally Wrote the Book on That Area – aptly titled ‘On Location In Lone Pine’ – and Co-Founded The Lone Pine Film Festival. And I was lucky to work on ‘Maverick’ (ALL this covered in our Podcast’s Ep 1). . It’s easy to see how and why this Movie was Seminal, beyond it being remade as ‘Sergeants 3’ and introducing most of us to Kali 45 Years before Indiana Jones went to The Temple Of Doom. And you can’t overstate how Good it is, even seeing it for the first time today (I whole-heartedly suggest seeing it with a Crowd). As one of you already astutely noted, the only national scenic area not part of the Forest Service is Alabama Hills National Scenic Area, which is administered by the Bureau of Land Management. To put things in perspective, the BLM is responsible for 247 million acres of federal land, three times that of the National Park Service. Most of that land is maintained for mining, oil and gas extraction, and grazing. However, the BLM does oversee a number of national monuments, federally designated wilderness units, and this one national scenic area, not to mention virtually all the feral equines in the US. Chances are you've already seen the Alabama Hills (named by Confederate sympathizers after the warship of the same name) featured in a truck commercial. The rugged terrain of the Owens Valley just east of Mount Whitney has been used by filmmakers from the silents of Fatty Arbuckle to the recent "Iron Man." Apart from innumerable westerns, the Alabama Hills were shot as the backdrop for a number of "Easterns", used a stand-in for the northwest frontier of India (now Afghanistan/Pakistan). Having hiked in the foothills of the Hindu Kush, I can say the similarity is fairly apt. The biggest production ever to film on location here was the adventure classic "Gunga-Din", which later influenced the Indiana Jones movies. The road through the Alabama Hills is mostly an unpaved, washboard track, but side trails will take the able explorer to such weird sights as Nightmare Rock, the Shark's Fin, and Mobius Arch. The views and colors are breathtaking when the sun sets behind the Sierra Nevada range to the immediate west. For scramblers, movie junkies, and serious climbers, the Alabama Hills are a natural playground. See if you can identify it when next watching a commercial for a Dodge Ram!
