His legs were insured for $300,000 even in the thirties. In his first screen test the comments were “can’t act, slightly bald, can dance a little”. CAN DANCE A LITTLE!! He formed a legendary partnership with Ginger Rogers. No one has ever danced like them, before or since. Their extraordinary chemistry was explosive in films like The Gay Divorcee, Top Hat, Roberta and Swing Time. When Ginger Rogers moved on, Fred played and danced opposite Eleanor Powell, Rita Hayworth, Judy Garland, Cyd Charisse and Audrey Hepburn. Birthday love for Gary Cooper, born on this day in 1901. His most outstanding performance came towards the end of his career in the classic, High Noon. He once described himself as ‘just an average guy from the middle of America’. He was very aware that he had an effect on the audiences of women who came in their droves to see him in Half A Bride, A Farewell To Arms and Now And Forever in the thirties. By the forties he had risen to become the highest paid male actor in Hollywood. He reached the top and stayed there until the Second World War in films such as Beau Geste, One Sunday Afternoon and Mr Deed Goes To Town. His contract did not allow him to be released to play Rhett Butler in Gone With The Wind however, his consolation was that he went on to win the Academy Award for Sergeant York. The post war years were less kind to him, not so many good films and a highly publicised affair with actress Patricia Neal brought about a four year separation in his marriage. His personal life has been well documented. But in 1952 came High Noon, his performance full of moral and physical courage and he won his second Academy Award. He was certainly very handsome and was cast in many a romantic swashbuckling role. He was a major box office star in the thirties, in musicals, westerns and costume epics. His films include The Rains Came, The Black Swan, Captain From Castile, Prince Of Foxes and Blood And Sand. His finest performance is surely The Mark Of Zorro in 1940. He once said ‘I’m sick of all these knight in shining armour parts’, he wanted to play something he felt was more worthwhile. After his service in the Second World War he began to play more dramatic parts, including in The Razor’s Edge and Nightmare Alley. In Billy Wilder’s Witness For The Prosecution, he played a man on trial for murder proving his acting worth. Married three times, he had two daughters. Before filming completed on Solomon And Sheba, he died of a heart attack at just 44. He could play any role from comedy to adventure and he played opposite the fabulous leading ladies of the time, Sophia Loren, Grace Kelly, Kim Novak, Audrey Hepburn and Gloria Swanson. He starred in Sunset Boulevard, The Dark Past, Stalag 17, Sabrina, Picnic, The Bridge On The River Kwai, The Wild Bunch and Network among many others. He served in the Second World War in the air force and kept up his performing in training films. He won an Academy Award and an Emmy. He was also awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame. His partner Stephanie Powers created the William Holden Wildlife Foundation as a tribute to him, he cared deeply about animals and wildlife conservation. It’s well documented that he was an alcoholic and this did affect his life in many ways, he had to turn down film roles and he pulled out of two towards the end of his life. He died in 1981 aged 63 following a fall at his home. The Spring Men’s Retreat this past weekend was a great time of brotherly bonding and iron sharpening iron. 19 of our men gathered together in Hurricane, UT to worship and pray together, discuss and share about life from a male’s perspective, spent time bonding over shooting, fishing, off-roading, and enjoying lots and lots of delicious food. They received the message of how to aspire to be better sons of God, being reminded that He is not only God, but also our Heavenly Father. Of letting go of their old selves, and continuing to strive toward becoming new men in Christ. There were lots of memories made and laughs that will surely help strengthen lifelong bonds. Birthday love for Leslie Howard, born on this day in 1893. A beautifully spoken English gentleman, he was perfectly cast and is always remembered as Ashley Wilkes, the young lover in Gone With The Wind, although he was in fact forty five when he took the role. His career began in amateur dramatics and by the late twenties he had become noticed on both sides of the Atlantic and went on to become a movie idol of the thirties. He starred opposite the leading ladies of the day, Norma Shearer, Merle Oberon and Bette Davis. Shortly before the outbreak of the Second World War he returned to the UK to assist in the war effort. He was tragically killed in June 1943, returning from a government lecture tour, when his plane was shot down by German fighters.
