One night, the Man on the Moon came down to earth disguised as a beggar. He chanced upon a Fox, a Monkey, and a Rabbit (usagi) and asked for some food. The Fox brought him fish from a stream, and the Monkey brought fruit from the trees, but the Rabbit could only offer grass. So he told the beggar to build a fire, and when it was built, threw himself onto the flames to offer himself to the Man. Amazed by the Rabbit's generosity, the beggar transformed back into the Man on the Moon and pulled the Rabbit from the fire. To honor the Rabbit's kindness, the Man on the Moon carried the Rabbit back to the moon to live with him. Now, if you look at the full moon, you can see the outline of the Rabbit pounding mochi on the moon. DAY 18 - Part 2: WILTSHIRE Following on from our visit to Joanna May's art gallery yesterday, where we got up close and personal with the Hare On The Moon armchair treasure hunt, we decided to take a trip to some of the landmarks in the book. The Avebury stone circle and the Westbury White Horse are just two of the many famous landmarks scattered across Wiltshire. We unfortunately didn't have enough time to go see them all. Even if you were to just look for the white horses, there were thirteen of them! Although only 8 are still visible. The first of these was made in the 1700's and the most recent one in 1999. Stonehenge is just one of the stone circles of the area too. For a pair of very similar rabbits but with a beige/white coat, see Christie’s London, Chinese Ceramics, Works of Art and Chinese Export Ceramics, 15 june 1999, lot 217. . An early Chinese source called the Chu Ci, a Western Han anthology of Chinese poems from the Warring States period, notes that along with a toad, there is a hare on the Moon who constantly pounds herbs for the immortals. His pouding on the herbs is the explanation for the craters on the moon. This notion is supported by later texts, including the Song-era Taiping Imperial Reader. As rabbits were not yet introduced to China during Western Han, the original image was not a rabbit but a hare. Han Dynasty poets call the hare on the Moon the “Jade Hare” or the “Gold Hare”, and these phrases were used often, in place of the word for the Moon. . The hare is the companion of Chang’e, the moon goddess. She was the wife of Houyi, who had travelled to the ends of the earth to find the pill of immortality. Eventually he was given it by Xi Wang Mu, Queen Mother of the West, and when he returned home he left it with his wife in a special casket. As with Pandora’s Box in Greek mythology, Chang’e could not resist opening it and, fearing discovery upon her husband’s sudden return, she swallowed the whole pill, overdosing on immortality. Consequently she floated heavenward and eventually landed on the moon, where she was trapped with a jade hare who was furious mixing herbs with a pestle and mortar to create the Elixir of Life for the immortals. . Daoist believe that the lingzhi has been used extensively in Chinese medicine. The motifs or patterns of lingzhi are quite popular in the Chinese decorative arts symbolizing longevity and health. 'Moonstruck' Technically the biggest supermoon of the year 2020, it is dubbed as the 'Pink Supermoon'. In addition to that it will also be at is closest approach to the Earth with a distance of just 221,772 miles away until the year 2035. Despite the cloudy weather conditions prior to capturing the image, I was pretty stoked to witness it although the pink phenomenon can only be observed from certain part of the globe.
