A few shots from our Ebbsfleet Citizen Archive heritage walk last Sunday 🏰 A whopping 39 attendees took in the sights of Greenhithe, guided as always by local historian Christoph Bull. Our penultimate heritage walk takes place this Saturday around St. Peter and St. Paul's Church in Swanscombe and will be followed by a short creative workshop and refreshments inside the church. The Lord Leycester is delighted to announce that we have been awarded a £20,000 grant from the @armybenevolentfund to improve the living accommodation for our resident Brethren! Brigadier (Ret’d) Peter Monteith, Chief Operating Officer, Army Benevolent Fund, stated: “Our charity provides regular funding, individually and through partner charities, to ensure that injured soldiers with impaired mobility have safe and comfortable homes. We were pleased to award a grant to the Lord Leycester this year.” The grant will partly fund planned major works to improve the accessibility of the residents’ bathrooms, which will also enable the Lord Leycester to welcome more disabled veterans in future. Wow, with a side of wow, and extra wow sauce on top. Moccas Church in Herefordshire. Said to have been founded when an angel told St Dubricius to build a monastery where he discovered a white sow and her piglets, Moccas or “the moor of the pigs” story began… and whether you find pigs or not, I can't recommend a visit highly enough 🐖 Originally built in 1166, a restoration began in 1870, which included adding the most impressive organ and painted case you're ever likely to see and which alone justifies the visit… …but it’s not alone - there’s a 14th century knight’s tomb! a full-on, floor standing, atmospheric music rising, impossible not to imagine Indiana Jones circling, while muttering X marks the spot, tomb! Plus, popinjays 🐦 perching in the stained glass (and tiles too, perhaps?), a devil’s door, flat pack masonry (early Ikea Gothic I presume 🤔), and best of all you can just show up, follow the trail in the leaflet, read the info boards and feel smart. 👀👀👀 Did you see our posts yesterday about the latest discoveries in the Lady Chapel as part of our Restoring Pugin project? Imagine this Chapel- with its grey-washed, dirty, dull, tired walls & ceiling- transformed with the reinstatement of Pugin’s colourful, vibrant, intentional and intense decorative paint schemes over the next two years. That’s what we are working towards as part of our @heritagefunduk Restoring Pugin Project. Through paint conservation work and detailed research we hope to bring Pugin’s original vision and design for our Cathedral back to its former glory, with all its richness, colour, gothic splendour and detail 🤩🤩🤩 As Sir Nikolaus Pevsner, architectural historian, said of the subsequent plain redecoration of the Cathedral “the whole effect could hardly be further from the richness of decoration and atmosphere that Pugin intended.” We are excited to be rediscovering Pugin’s designs on the fabric of the Cathedral and to be planning how to reinstate this rich and precious decoration! In Eglish townland, five miles north of Armagh, these ancient crosses can be found in a large hilltop council owned graveyard. The name Eglish, from the Irish An Eaglais, ‘the church’, usually indicates a medieval parish church site, but here the crosses point to earlier use of the hilltop. The ruined structure nearby, not in state care, is what is left of a 1720 church, replaced by the present Drumsallan Church of Ireland church in 1821–1822. The North Cross has an ancient base and head but the shaft is new and the head is repaired. For many years the head was set directly in the base, but after it was knocked over and damaged in the 1970s the crosses were placed in state care in 1989 and this cross was repaired and restored. The South Cross is part only of a head of the same form, but there is evidence that it originally had a finial. On each face is a deep hollow at or near the crossing, but this is probably not original decoration. This fragment was mounted on a stone plinth for its future safety. These two crosses share features with others in the Blackwater valley area and probably date from the late 9th or 10th century. Although battered and incomplete, they are reminders of what must have been an important early church here. A Landmark on Cornwall’s coastline, Bude’s Compass Point Stormtower, also known as the Pepperpot, has been successfully moved to its new home away from the erroding cliff edge. it was wonderful to see the tower presented to the local community and celebrate the completion of the project. The Pepperpot is an iconic park of Bude’s heritage which was at risk of being lost forever due to the effects of coastal erosion. Sitting proudly in its new location the Pepperpot will be enjoyed by generations to come.

RSPB Corncrake & Machair Festivals for Schools Last week staff from the RSPB Corncrake Calling project, local RSPB team in the Outer Hebrides, and staff from the Species on the Edge Project delivered two Corncrake and Machair festivals in Benbecula and Barra. The festivals saw pupils from Sgoil Baile a’ Mhanaich (Balivanich Primary School), Sgoil Bagh a’ Chaisteil (Castlebay Primary) and Sgoil Eoligearraidh (Eoligarry Primary) learn more about the elusive corncrake through a full day of games, story-telling and mask making sessions. Themes such as the lifecycle of the corncrake, migration and the corncrake’s favourite habitat the machair were included in the festival along with a bumblebee and insect hunt with the Bumblebee Conservation Trust. Thanks to funding from Comhairle nan Eilean Siar and the National Heritage Lottery Fund, the pupils had a wonderful day pretending to be corncrakes, flowers and bees. Our thanks also go to the pupils, teachers, the wonderful volunteers and helpers who joined us in Balivanich and Castlebay. From a little research this was only two years after he was appointed as Herbarium assistant in @museumwales He later became deputy curator and retired in 1961. With special thanks to National Lottery Players & @heritagefunduk for supporting us, let us introduce ourselves again!⁠ ⁠ The project titled ‘Sporting Heritage – Working to keep the nation’s sporting stories alive!’ will run for two years and give Sporting Heritage the capacity to work across the UK supporting hundreds of volunteers and organisations who look after sporting collections, archives and stories. ⁠ ⁠ Through a programme of training, digital support, mentoring, events, online campaigns and guidance, the project will ensure that more of this important heritage is removed from risk and that more diverse, hidden and ignored heritage is uncovered, celebrated and shared. Crucially, a substantial part of the funding, made possible thanks to National Lottery players, will be used to deliver a series of community grant programmes, directly supporting grassroots activity in communities across the UK, often for the first time. ⁠ ⁠ Dr Justine Reilly, Sporting Heritage Director, said: ⁠ ⁠ “We can’t thank the players of the National Lottery enough! We are absolutely delighted that the Heritage Fund are supporting the rich and diverse sporting collections of the UK through this award. It will provide us with the capacity to intensify the support we provide for those who look after these collections, and enable us to draw in new voices and remove heritage from risk.
