Private Gerald Robert Campbell was a stretcher-bearer in the B-Company, Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, during the assault on the German city of Leer on April 28, 1945. Although himself wounded and under intense shell, mortar and machinegun fire, he attended 17 wounded. On April 28 1945 during the crossing (operation Duck) of the Ems River, B-Company was advancing over open ground when they were met with a very heavy concentration of artillery and mortar shelling, along with heavy machine gun and small arms fire. During this barrage B-Company suffered 17 casualties, among them two of their four stretcher bearers. Private Campbell and the remaining stretcher bearer started to evacuate the wounded. While they were moving back with a stretcher case a shell landed and exploded directly under the stretcher, wounding the patient and the two stretcher bearers. Private Campbell, neglecting his own wounds, immediately applied first aid to the other two and, summoning an additional man, proceeded once again to evacuate the wounded. Being the only stretcher bearer left in the company and disregarding his own safety private Campbell worked incessantly and speedily until the last wounded man was evacuated. Only then did he stop long enough to dress his own wound and proceed on with his company under heavy fire. Private Campbell stayed with his company and carried on magnificent work with cheerfulness until his company had secured the position. Only then did he go to the Regimental Aid Post to have his own wounds attended. Good evening my gentle readers, fellow bibliophiles, and all ships at sea and in orbit. Finally all the signed volumes of the collection are in one place. Some are first edition books and some are not. A few tidbits about them…Grace Lee Whitney, Stephen Ambrose, David Halberstam, Tom Blackburn, Joseph Lash, and Robert Jordan have all passed away. For those in the know the Robert Jordan is not an autopen autograph like his later volumes have. The Grace Lee Whitney, i.e. Yeoman Rand of Star Trek, like many cast members wrote an autobiography and its parts inspiration and heartbreak. She was a grand lady. The Crow graphic novel was signed by James O’Barr as a thank you for being very nice to him and helping him out at his merch table because he had no one to help. The same with the Grace Lee Whitney. At a Star Trek convention all the other stars had staffs and agents to help and she was along and a bit overwhelmed. In both cases, being staff at these conventions, stepped in to help O’Barr and Whitney and were rewarded with autographed and inscribed books. Some are up and coming history authors like Stefane Van Steelandt ( @ladyofthearmy )who very awesomely gifted the book to the collection! Some were found in very interesting places like the Joseph Lash was found in the Friends of the Sylva Library store in North Carolina and the Anthony P. Tully and Jonathan Parshall in an antiquarian and used bookstore down the street from the library store in Sylva North Carolina. The Doris Kearns Goodwin No Ordinary Time was found at a library sale in Brentwood Tennessee. Only one can speculate how these books ended up in these places. B-17 Flying Fortress 'Miss Donna Mae II' downed by friendly bombs. The "Miss Donna Mae II" drifted out of position while over the target and under another B-17 "Trudy" 42-97791, also from the 332nd BS. One of the 1,000 lb. bombs from "Trudy" tore off the left horizontal stabilizer and sent the plane into an unrecoverable spin. One of the wings came off at about 13,000 feet. All 11 crew member were killed. Ook dit weekend zijn wij geopend voor jullie, maar daarbij is iets speciaals. Wij hebben namelijk weer iets speciaals geregeld in samenwerking met de afdeling Rekwisieten van Defensie. Zij komen namelijk een Long Tom brengen. Een Long Tom is een zwaar artilleriestuk wat is ontwikkeld en gebruikt door de Amerikanen tijdens de Tweede Wereldoorlog. Naast deze mooie Long Tom is voor het eerst ook de Diamond te zien en uiteraard zijn de andere voertuigen te bewonderen dit weekend. Naast deze unieke stukken zal er ook een Demo te zien zijn waarbij Wargames worden uitgelegd. Wij zijn dit weekend geopend vanaf donderdag tot en met zondag. Waarbij wij op donderdag en vrijdag geopend zijn van 10 tot 17 uur en op zaterdag en zondag geopend zijn van 12 tot 17 uur. Lance Sergeant John Alexander Bullions of the Irish Regiment of Canada was in command of the leading section of the forward platoon. During the night of 27, 28 April 1945, they got the orders to advance towards the village of Heveskes near the harbor town of Delfzijl. This little town was protected by an extensive trench system and bunkers and covered by tactical wire. At approximately 23:00 hours, the pioneers blew a gap through the wire entanglement and Bullions led his section through to open a lane for the company. The Germans opened up with heavy fire from both machine guns, mortars and artillery fire from the coast, the whole area was swept with murderous fire. The section passed through the first obstacle and mopped up the German position, and then encountered a second wire obstacle for which no explosives were available. Lance Sergeant Bullions ordered his men to take cover from the heavy German fire and went forward alone. Despite the heavy fire attracted by his movements, Bullions succeeded in cutting a gap in the wire, through which he led his section. One of his men was wounded and caught in the wire. When his section has seized the initial objective (crossroad) and was sited to hold the gap, Lance Sergeant Bullions returned under heavy fire to the aid of his wounded comrade. While so exposing himself in aid of his wounded comrade Lance Sergeant Bullions was killed. According to his recommendation report for the Silver Star, he distinguished himself by extraordinary heroism, both by his act of opening a gap, through which his company was able to pass, and by his unselfish devotion to his men which resulted in his death at the age of 20. It was due to his heroism and leadership that his company was able to reach its objective and capture the town of Heveskes. For this he was posthumously awarded the Silver Star on July 20, 1945. During the fighting for the Delfzijl-Pocket (Netherlands) on April 25, 1945, the area of the Perth Regiment was heavily shelled; German 10,5 cm FLAK guns on the high coastal dike at Nansum had perfect observation, and were firing point-blank into the positions gained by the Perths. Help was arranged from 12 Spitfire fighter-bombers. The plan was that artillery should fire smoke-shells to indicate the German Battery positions to the aircraft. The Spitfire squadron arrived overhead to soon, did not wait for target identification, and their bombing was a failure. The slow advance, with frequent casualties, went on for another three days of hard fighting, with the German guns on the dike taking a persistent toll. On the fifth day of the battle, Lieutenant-Colonel Andrew had maneuvered the Regiment, yard by expensive yard, to a position from which he considered the big guns on the dike could be tackled. With the aid of a smoke-shell program from the artillery and the battalion mortars, Dog Company made a 500-yard dash across open ground, and wiped out a German position which was protecting the guns; 20 prisoners were taken in this process. Just after dark, Charlie Company went through Dog Company, while artillery and mortars again smoked the guns on the dike. Charlie’s final assault took the Germans by surprise, captured the guns, and bagged 177 prisoners, more than twice the strength of the assaulting company. When inspecting the battery, the Canadians became aware that they had been relatively lucky. They found a large amount of machine guns, which could have killed many among the attackers. The combination of the surprise attack and the dense smoke screen had prevented this. Having cleared the outworks from an area of more than 10 square miles, on the approaches from the north to the town and port of Delfzijl, the Perths were relieved by the Cape Breton Highlanders, who carried out the attack on the port itself. Located in the Hermanville British War cemetery in Hermanville-sur-Mer is the headstone of Bombardier John Stott who served with the 68th Anti-Tank regiment, Royal Artillery. He died on the 8th July 1944 and was 29 years old. His service number number was 4745397. He was the son of John Henry and Edith Stott, of Chester-le-Street, Co Durham. The German port of Bremen was one of the last big cities to be taken by the British Army in the European campaign, being captured in the last week of April 1945. The city was captured in a two-fold attack by the British 3rd Division , 52nd Division and 43rd Division. These infantry divisions were supported by tanks and specialized armored vehicles. Before the capture of Bremen, 767 aircraft of RAF Bomber Command No. 1, 3, 4, 6 and 8 Group carried out a tactical bombardment. The bombs were mainly destined for the southeastern suburbs, through which British troops would launch their attack on the city. Most of the fighting took place on the outskirts of Bremen, after the British soldiers forced their way into the city, the German resistance collapsed. On April 27, 1945, the command post of Generalleutnant Fritz Becker, Kampfkommandant of Bremen, surrendered to the 4th Wiltshires. After the fighting, large parts of the port city lay in ruins. An area two by four miles in the middle of the city had turned into a desolate wasteland of ruins. Between 22 and 27 April, 540 civilians were killed in the fighting. This then and now photo shows Crocodile flamethrower tanks of the A-Squadron, 7th Royal Tank Regiment (added to support the 3rd Division) on Buntentorsteinweg in Bremen. It also helped that for this haul there was 50 bucks store credit involved. Several are first editions with some having a full number line or the correct number line. But what’s really neat is the Strawson and Iredale are British copies and the Iredale has how many pounds and shillings the book was on special. The Herington is an Australian volume. Sadly it was price clipped but still interesting and cheap enough to buy. Also definitely a sucker for a Penguin Books paperback that’s in mint shape! A Churchill AVRE on display in the Bovington Tank Museum. An offshoot of the Churchill tank line of the British army. It took the basic chassis and hull and made it an engineering platform to help in obstacle and fortified position clearing. The main gun was replaced with a large calibre demolition spigot mortar, its ammunition often was referred to as the "flying dustbin". #OTD in 1941,Leamington Spa. The Prime Minister watching Czech troops training with a 2-pounder anti-tank gun. The F C A arrived in Leamington in 1940 following the occupation of Czechoslovakia by the Nazis. The four-thousand military personnel were based in and around the town for two years. Their headquarters were in Harrington House, now demolished, a large Victorian villa a few yards from the park gates in Newbold Terrace. While based in mid-Warwickshire, a small number of specially selected Czechoslovak Warrant Officers were sent to Arisaig in Western Scotland to be trained as paratroop agents by the British Special Operations Execuive (SOE). After a very rigorous training course, they formed a select group of men who were on standby to be parachuted into occupied Czechoslovakia to carry out sabotage missions and to support the Czechoslovak Underground movement. The invasion stripes were painted on nearly a year ago as a nod to the 79th anniversary of the Invasion of Normandy on D-Day. Good afternoon my gentle readers, fellow bibliophiles, and all ships at sea and in orbit… Went to a local big library book sale. Has it mentioned that library book sales are loved a lot?! All the hardcovers, except the Harrison, first editions or first printings with some having a full number line or the correct number line. Some like the Gilbert and Ryan have been sought for a while now and are replacing either later editions or BC editions. The Eisenhower is replacing a BOMC edition. The Harrison while a BC edition is a first printing. The Tolkiens are the Ballentine editions but are humble 70’s editions. The Collier Lewis editions are also 70’s editions. But the CS Lewis books was a bit of close call because someone had picked them up, carried them for a bit and then put them down again! So they were quickly snagged. In fact most of the books had to quickly grabbed…the usual familiar face book collectors, bibliophiles, and scanner raccoons were in the room too. A couple of dirty looks by others were given when the book was snagged before they could grab it. The Pacific War Sometimes a good narrative history is exactly what the doctor ordered. Nothing fancy, between the tackles, good ol’ fashioned World War 2 history is exactly what this book is. If you’re looking for a complete beginning to end accounting of the war in the Pacific, get yourself a copy of this book. Even though it's a classic narrative history of the war, it still proved to be quite thought provoking. My biggest indelible takeaway from this one was Douglas MacArthur, kind of overrated as a general. That may be blasphemous from an American history perspective, but throughout the book MacArthur is constantly clashing with his colleagues and superiors, constantly complaining about lack of resources and support, and ultimately his successes on the battlefield are of marginal importance in the grand scheme and strategy of the war. Great sourcing, great storytelling, great detail, this one has it all. I’ve had this book for years and it's been a staple in my personal library, so make it a staple in yours. If you fancy yourself a World War II buff grab a copy today. I'm also curious to know what others think of MacArthur as a general, do you agree or disagree with him being overrated? Born in south east London in 1914, William (Bill) Henry Price served with the Royal Artillery and was a Light Anti-Aircraft gunner. During D-Day, on the 6th June 1944 Bill was aboard the 5,000-tonne Innerton, one of the first merchant ships to be deliberately holed and sunk during the battle. Bill served as anti-aircraft artillery on the deck of the semi-submerged merchant ship. This was on one of the first merchant ships which created the floating Mulberry Harbour breakwater off Arromanches-les-Bains as part of Operation Overlord. Two years earlier, Great Britain had designed a secret concept of the artificial harbours code named Mulberry ‘B’ the British sector, and Mulberry ‘A’ the American sector. He later served in Belgium and then the Netherlands. He passed away at the age of 103 in 2018. Amazing picture of tanks and soldiers of the US 2nd Armored Division during their advance near Lemgo in Germany, April 1945. The mayor of Lemgo, Wilhelm Gräfer, tried to prevent bloodshed by surrendering his town to the advancing American troops of the 2nd Armored Division. However, the local German army commanders did not cooperate and Gräfer was executed for high treason. Lemgo was not bombed during the Second World War, so the historic city center, one of the most beautiful in all of North Rhine-Westphalia, has largely been preserved in its original state. Most attention drawing item is “cigarette box” which belongs to Anatolii Tsymashek (Анатолии Цымашек), Belarussian RKKA soldier, sergeant of the 63rd separate horse-drawn transport company. Pic 3: Leander class, this British built class of light cruiser would see extensive service with the RN, RAN and New Zealand navy during WW2, HMNZS Achilles would see action at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939. The Australian Leanders were built to a different design, featuring twin boiler rooms and subsequently twin funnels, this gave the Australian ships a distinctive look over the rest of the class. After the fall of France they then served in Madagascar, Persia (now Iran) and Iraq in 1942, before deploying to Italy in 1943 and finally North West Europe in February 1945. Fitting right in with the bulk of my collection, this 1943 Remington Rand M1911A1 is far from pristine. Discoloration and post-war alterations make this piece less desirable for some collectors. Not me. I like the pieces with silent stories. When I acquire a piece with post-production alterations, I usually start replacing the post-war parts with wartime-production parts. Some suggest that I should leave them as-is to preserve the full history of the piece. Regardless of how I approach a particular piece, I do save all of the parts that I replace, so I can always return them to the state in which I acquired them. Fanta, the drink that was created during the Second World War in 1940, in Essen, Germany, when Coca-Cola Deutschland could no longer obtain the right ingredients for Coca-Cola. This was a result of the Allied lockdown. As a result, 43 factories of the popular drink in Germany were unable to receive the secret ingredient used to make Coca-Cola. That is why a replacement soft drink had to be made according to a new recipe. A drink which the Germans eventually loved, and many later saw as their own. . Max Keith, head of Coca-Cola Deutschland, had the idea to make Fanta. A very cheap product that would be made with "the leftovers from the leftovers that nobody wanted", i.e. wasted ingredients like apple cider or whey milk. The name was coined in a brainstorming session as a shortened form of the German word 'Fantasie'. The result was successful. Since contact with the Coca-Cola headquarters in Atlanta was impossible, Fanta had therefore developed Fanta without permission or consultation. In 1941, Fanta was registered as a German brand. . In 1943 alone, three million bottles were sold in Germany. Fanta's reign during the World War II ended as soon as the war ended. Coca-Cola, the parent company, regained control of the German factories and their products, including Fanta, whose production claimed they were not being closely linked to the NS. Fanta disappeared for a few years until 1955, when Coca-Cola would resurrect the brand and 'wash its face' to compete with the new line of drinks that Pepsi released in the 1950s. . All post-war soft drinks that were released under the Fanta brand name, no longer have anything to do with these original wartime variants. .
