How do I improve my sleep quality? I’ll be honest - I’m a great sleeper when all the conditions are in place! I do notice however that when my mind is too active I’ll be awake for most of the night. To improve this, I tap - I empty my head and I get to some sort of resolution, then I tend to calm a bit more. I also follow my body - if I’m tired at 8pm, I’ll be in bed at 8pm! I don't mind what time it is - I’m useless to anyone once when I’m tired!! I also write things down before bed - as a brain dump of the day so I don't go to be subconsciously thinking about things. I must be doing something right as I wake up fully ready for the day ahead, full of energy and totally rested. I am always talking about ways to Feng Shui your bedroom to help encourage a good night’s sleep, but another way to do this is to incorporate crystals. Anything from financial stress, work stress and family stress can cause us to lay in bed at night unable to turn our brains off. We also need to heal our energy in order to relax. When you use crystals to help you sleep, you can gain the peace of mind to let go of your anxieties. I have always been a very light sleeper, so one of my go-to crystals to help me sleep through the night is Rose quartz. Another favorite is Amethyst. Rose quartz is a great grounding stone, especially if the bedroom is above the ground floor. I speak a lot at 2 Spuds Wellbeing about exercise, walking, nutrition, stress management and everything in between but one thing I have not mentioned as yet is sleep... Sleep is incredibly important for anything that we do. - we need sleep to repair muscles after a heavy gym session. - we need it to help our bodies recover from injury or illness. - we need it to prepare for an endurance event that we have been training for, for the past year or so. - we need it to be able to function well as well. - and many other elements... As I say it is very important. So my top ways to get better sleep are... 1) try to go to bed and wake up at the same time everyday. 2) keep tablets, phones and laptops out of the bedroom, the light behind these can disrupt sleep. 3) make sure you have a good duvet, room temperature, comfy bed and curtains. 4) try and relax/unwind/meditate as part of your wind down routine when you get to bed. 5) if something is bothering you either before sleep or during the night then write it down, don't hold it in your brain, write it down and then deal with it when you are more refreshed. Approximately 1 in 10 adults struggle with chronic insomnia, meaning that they regularly struggle to fall or stay asleep for a period of at least 3 months. Not only does insomnia affect our physical health, but it can impact our mental health ranging from sleep anxiety to clinical depression. If you or someone you care about is struggling with their sleep, we have great news. CBT-I or CBT for Insomnia is a well-studied and highly effective treatment and generally leads to improvement within 8 sessions or less. Research has shown that CBT-I is just as effective as sleep medications in the short-term and even more effective in the long term. Even more good news...CBT-I is effective for people who have struggled with insomnia for years. It is never too late to get help and effective treatment. Often people are confused and think that CBT-I is only about creating a dark room or turning off technology close to bed time. When you have trouble falling asleep on a consistent basis, it's worth getting curious about who is keeping you awake.⁠ ⁠ Our parts always have good intentions for us, but they don't always realize the impact they're having.⁠ ⁠ Sometimes they realize the impact they're having, but they're too stuck in the past to understand that they no longer need to do what they're doing to keep us safe.⁠ ⁠ I use IFS with my clients to help them get to know which parts of them are keeping them awake. I used to have a really hard time falling asleep, and then I learned about the "warm bath effect," and it has worked wonders though for me it's a shower, not a bath. Right after I brush my teeth but before I get in bed, I take a hot shower. I've found that it relaxes my muscles and helps me clear my mind. And research shows that a warm shower actually dilates the blood vessels on the surface of your skin, which helps your body lower your core body temperature, one of the keys to falling asleep. It’s no secret that sleep is one of the most important factors for good health! 💤 When we sleep our body repairs muscle, grows bone, regulates hormones and stores memory. 🧠 🦴 💪🏼 Easy tips to improve your sleep hygiene: ❌ 📺 Avoid screen time one hour before bed. - The blue light reduces your good quality deep & REM sleep. ❌ ☕️ Avoid caffeine after 2-3pm - the effects can last up to 8hrs after consumption). ❌ 🍷 Avoid regular alcohol consumption before bed - it inhibits REM sleep in the first half of your sleep cycle. If you’re already cutting corners on your total length of sleep, then be mindful of this! 🛌 ⏰ Aim for the same bed time every night - this will help improve your circadian rhythms and set you up for a good sleep cycle. - It’s not always about waking up at the same time. ☀️ Get outside and into the morning sun within the first few hours of waking. 💤 Any less than 7hrs sleep will result in sub-optimal conditioning overtime. Shift work is a 2A carcinogen - ask any shift worker out there about their energy levels and also about their sleep hygiene! Coincidence? Nah. Are you one of those people that constantly finds themselves awake in the middle of the night? You can’t get back to sleep because your mind is whirring, thinking about lots of things and you can’t switch off. You’ve tried everything to get back to sleep but nothing seems to help.
