Getting good sleep use to be a lifelong problem for me, but not anymore. A couple of years back I was determined to figure out why I had such poor sleep. I read things on the internet, kept sleep notes and took this and that until finally the solutions came from Ray Peat’s suggestions. Now I get the best sleep of my life. The biggest thing that helped my sleep was food timing. Meat in my dinner meal was the culprit. The body uses protein for energy and building muscles and that kind of protein takes at least six hours to digest. Our liver is a major player in sleep and it can’t shut down until it’s work is finished. No wonder sleep issues are such a common problem, look at the meat portions people eat at night! The second key is to get the liver ready for the long rest so it doesn’t wake me up at 3::00 in the morning struggling to fall back to sleep. So for my evening meals I eat fat and carbs and this cozy bowl of boiled white sweet potatoes with homemade chicken bone broth and butter is my kind of sleeping aid. Nowadays I eat purposefully, using my food to accomplish my goals whether it be to sleep, lose fat or give me energy. Not only is good sleep so important in achieving a high metabolism, but getting that big pile of food out of my evening keeps all that unusable extra food from getting stored as fat. I wake up with my stomach flat, my skin looking fresh, and I am ready to have some fun eating first thing in the morning instead of feeling sluggish and a little off.
