Limited triple LP version and Cherry Tree Club version of I Am Easy To Find by The National, from 2019. The album's name is also the name of a short film by Mike Mills featuring Alicia Vikander, she is portrayed on the album cover and the grey vinyl of the triple edition has her face etched on one side. The film and the album have a beautiful relation, and coexist in a way. The album also features appearances from Lisa Hannigan, Kate Stables/This Is The Kit, Sharon Van Etten and Gail Ann Dorsey(!). I became obsessed with this album that year, I couldn't fathom how good it was. I also got to see them in Copenhagen the same year, and it was among the most incredible concerts I've been to. When they played Where Is Her Head?, it was such a force coming out of the stage that you just, couldn't believe. 10 people on stage. Fantastic. #291 I Am Easy to Find 8.95/10 The National - 2019 - Alternativa - 🇺🇸 Que impresión la facilidad que tienen los hermanos Dessner para convertir en oro (casi) todo lo que tocan, “I Am Easy to Find” es un proyecto muy arriesgado, porque es experimental en el más amplio sentido de la palabra, y cuando se experimenta de esa forma solamente hay dos resultados posibles, o sale una obra maestra o resulta un fiasco, y afortunadamente para The National y para nosotros, fue la primera. El álbum es uno de los mejores del género alternativo, tiene un dinamismo muy interesante porque a pesar de que dura cerca de 70 minutos, nunca se hace tedioso, hay muchos cambios de ritmos y de melodías, todas ellas construidas sobre una base electrónica pero tranquila, a través de la producción que es magnífica se genera una paleta muy bien nutrida de texturas. El otro ingrediente que aporta para bien es la variedad de voces femeninas que introduce el álbum entre las que se encuentran nombres del calibre de Sharon Van Etten, Lisa Hannigan o Gail Ann Dorsey, hacen que el álbum sea todavía mejor, de nuevo, arriesgaron y ganaron. Recomiendo asignar un lugar y un tiempo adecuado para escuchar el álbum como se debe, porque así es como se escucha mejor. Picked this record up last weekend at Shake It Records in Cincinnati last weekend. I’d been putting off buying it since 2019 because I’ve been specifically hunting for this triple LP version that includes the film score to the I Am Easy To Find short film. It’s literally not available anywhere else but in this pressing. It was worth holding out for. It’s a continuous 22 minute piece of reworked versions of songs from the LP with interspersed narration from film. The D-side is a very light laser etching of film star #AliciaVikander. . New Music Friday The National have been expanding like the Big Bang since their debut 22 years ago. They reached peak expansion with the stunning I Am Easy To Find in 2019. It was a sweeping and spacious record. It was and is outstanding. But every universe has it's moment of inertia and with frontman Matt hitting the writer's block head on, belief close to the band was that the end was possibly upon them. But then, like a barritoned phoenix up stepped Berninger with some words and songs that became this year's fantastic First Two Pages of Frankenstein. This was a record very much about losing the mojo, losing the words and losing hope. Laugh Track therefore is a surprise. It is the album you write after the album you've written about writer's block. It is full of great great songs, wonderful moments and the most incredible lines. Right from Alphabet City it's abundantly clear we are in rich The National territory. Deep End is deceptively catchy, the sadder and (even) catchier (a classic National move) Weird Goodbyes practically struts across the room to climb into your ear for the foreseeable. Surely, morose middle-aged melancholy shouldn't be this enjoyable, right? Turn Off The House delights at every turn, Phoebe Bridgers trades verses with Matt and helps the title track hit home. Hard. Space Invader anchors the record due in large part to half the song showcasing the incredible drumming talent of Bryan Devendorf. Following all (or any) of of this would be beyond most bands. The National are not most bands. They swiftly deliver a killer trio with the sublime Hornets, Coat on a Hook and Tour Manager. All three feel like gifts for long standing fans. Last but not least the most interesting pick of the bunch, Smoke Detector. Repeating the refrain, 'You don't know how much I love you, do you?' Matt does his best Robert Smith. This seven minute epic has the monologue territory of Not In Kansas and the edgy raw quality found on Alligator (especially Abel). It is a return, revisit and extension all at the same time. And like the album as a whole and band themselves, utterly exceptional. Enjoy.
