Beautiful Iceland ! Check out the Volcanic Rock Arch in Lake Myvatn, Iceland! These are some photos of my cruise excursion to the Lake Myvatn area. I went on one of the last foraging trips of this summer a couple of weeks ago, and I found these fields of fireweeds as well as a wonderful, wise old rock dwelling - and some equine friends! 💖 September arrived with storm warnings and I reckon flower foraging is over for this year. I always feel like I haven't foraged as much as I'd like, but I'm sure when I finally sort through the paper bags I have drying around the house, I'll realise I have more than I thought I did 🌿 I haven't been very active on social media lately, which was to be expected as I'm in a 12th house year currently, and the recent Venus retrograde was in my 12th house of Leo. Gathering wild herbs is a meditation practice for me. I begin by walking, my empty mesh bag held in my hand. I walk and take time to tune in to the now: the outer and inner space I am at right now. I listen to the symphony of qi and sense for the places where the inner and outer are in harmony and where they are playing by their own tunes. Then I turn to the plants. I let them draw me to them, feeling my way to the plants that invite me and the ones my being is drawn to. I cannot measure the concentrations of individual compounds they contain and I do not concern myself with the textbook descriptions of their medicinal uses (though I do love to read and learn about them at other times). The textbooks cannot tell me about the particular plant in front of me. Each as unique as you and I. My relationship with this Geranium different from that Geranium. So instead of thinking my way through, I sense into the energy of each individual plant. I sense for compatibility and complementarity with my own energy. As my mesh bag slowly fills, I sense for balance (or not) of the energies contained within and I let that guide me further towards what I add in. At the end of my gathering practice, I feel nourished by the practice itself, and I allow my gratitude to infuse my mesh bag. Around the time Iceland was settled, over 1100 years ago, the land was covered with birchwood trees, which are Iceland’s national trees. Iceland was even more heavily forested in older pre-settlement times than people had thought. Fossils, place names, the remnants of charcoal and climate modeling suggest that 25% to 40% of Iceland was forested when the Vikings came. The country lost most of its trees more than a thousand years ago, when Viking settlers cut the forests that covered one-quarter of the countryside The woods were used as fuel and building material, and used charcoal to forge iron tools. [English below] Fjallabjalla (Pulsatilla alpina) er af sóleyjaætt (Ranunculaceae) og blómstrar snemma á sumrin. Í heimkynnum sínum í Ölpunum blómstrar hún jafnvel þó enn sé snjór á jörðu. Hún þolir því margt og hentar vel fyrir íslenskar aðstæður. Eins og sumar aðrar tegundir af sóleyjaætt myndar fjallabjallan fræhöfuð sem líkist hárbrúðum. En við könnumst við hárbrúður sem holtasóleyjar verða að þegar fræin þroskast, en þær eru hinsvegar af rósaætt. Hér má sjá myndir af blómum fjallabjöllunnar sem hægt er að sjá í Grasagarðinum núna og einnig mynd af fræhöfðunum frá því í fyrrasumar. --- Pulsatilla alpina, the alpine pasqueflower or alpine anemone is of the plant family Ranunculacea and flowers early in the summer. In the Alps it sometimes starts flowering while still covered in snow. It’s very hardy and easy to grow in Iceland. Like some other species in the family Ranunculacea, the alpine pasqueflower forms a pretty seedhead.
