One of my favorite ways to encounter wildlife is to see them in action, breeding, fighting, or in this case, feeding. Whenever I see Blunt-headed Tree Snakes (Imantodes cenchoa) one of my first thoughts is always "What do these animated pieces of string even eat?" Of course, most sources will tell you that they eat small lizards or frogs, and while that makes sense, its always hard to believe it until you see it. Conveniently, I actually did get to see it. The Common Blunt-headed Vine Snake, or Chunk-headed Snake, (Imantodes cenchoa) is a common snake species in Costa Rica’s humid lowland forests. These snakes are entirely nocturnal and arboreal. A number of special adaptations allow this snake to stretch out far into the air from its support branch and snatch unsuspecting lizards from their perch while they sleep, without ever touching the lizard‘s resting branch and alerting it to its presence. These snakes have enlarged fangs located towards the back of their mouth and a mild venom which they use to subdue their prey. Despite their tiny neck, they can take prey up to ten times the width of their neck. Esta serpiente puede habitar en ambientes tanto conservados como perturbados que contengan la presencia de vegetación arbustiva o arbórea. Otra de las bellas serpientes con amplia distribución en el país: La famosa bejuquilla o cordoncillo (Imantodes cenchoa). Una especie con distribución desde centroamerica hasta el sur de suramérica, ocurriendo en zonas trans y cis-andinas de Colombia. Es una serpiente totalmente inofensiva que se caracteriza por tener un cráneo bastante grande a comparación del diametro del cuerpo (que suele ser bastante largo), donde sus ojos suelen resaltar bastante.
