Late Night With the Devil (2024) ʀᴇᴠɪᴇᴡ ꜱᴄᴏʀᴇ: 7.7/10 I love “stumbling upon” really good movies I knew little about. Besides seeing the trailer, I went in this one blind. Late Night With the Devil may still be in theatres, which given the storyline (the feeling of being part of the audience), would be the best place to watch it. Otherwise I believe it’s available on Shudder. What a thriller of a movie. On Halloween night in 1977, Jack Delroy (Dastmalchian), a late night talk show host, is on the verge of being cancelled. Ratings are down, the bosses aren’t happy, everyone is watching Johnny Carson instead. His special guests tonight include psychic Christou, skeptical former magician Carmichael the Conjurer, parapsychologist author June Ross-Mitchell and her subject Lilly D’Abo. It’s an episode you won’t want to miss. You’re rooting for Jack to save his show, but at the same time a strong part of you wants him to quit while he’s ahead. Faced with the prospect of becoming an overnight sensation and cementing himself in history forever, he ultimately ignores all the warning signs, forgoes the many opportunities to stop, and takes things beyond the point of no return. Despite it not being that scary, this horror film makes up for it in so many other ways. It’s quite twisted, unleashing evil into every movie theatre and living room it appears on. It’ll have you hypnotized where you’ll feel the panic, confusion and dreadfulness. The third act is delivers a scary amount of shock value. It was original, nail biting and innovative. They did a great job capturing that genuine look and vibe of 70’s talk shows. The tension of the movie continues to build at a perfect pace, leaving you feeling increasingly uneasy with every scene. I can say that The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare is a more balanced and down-to-earth war story that feels at home in a history classroom. The fascinating portrayals and planning are fantastic, with smart writing that helps give you a taste of the intelligence side of warfare. Our crew is well ingrained into the movie and keeps everyone a part of the action as they battle the Nazis, led by some solid acting. With an engaging pace and realistic action, you get something that should not overwhelm you and still give you that war story bite. However, the movie’s toned-down approach may also be a weakness for those wanting that engaging, nail-biting choreography with boom, bang, and blood. You do have some cool moves, and the comedy does make it more bearable to help cut through the drier tones of the movie. If the movie had better character balance and some Hollywood magic, it perhaps would have scored higher for me. @abigailthemovie was quite entertaining. Although the movie may not be the most original, it successfully mixed old and new elements to create a fun movie that combines horror and thriller into one. With a perfect balance of comedy, characters that stand out from the usual genre fodder, and some deeper storytelling, Abigail is a unique vampire movie that is worth watching. It is an enjoyable way to pass the time, and any vampire fan (except for the Twilight-level romance) will enjoy the new take on vampire powers. However, the movie moves a bit too fast and loses the surprise factor that could have been a nice touch. Also, it gets a little too gory and uses strong language at times, which is a bit absurd. Nevertheless, I feel the movie will be enjoyable for a wide audience, and if you can make it to the theater, you will have a fun time. Critic Rating: 4/5 (Awesome!) #CivilWar is a difficult movie to watch because of its close resemblance to the real world and the brutal nature of war. However, if you can handle it, you’ll be rewarded with a powerful and impactful film that boasts incredible artistic flair. The performances of the cast, particularly Dunst and her co-stars, bring the story to life and make them intriguing players in the theater of war. The writing and planning integrated into the story are fantastic, which further amplifies the suspense and stakes that make the movie thrilling. The cinematography is the magical key that brings the edge and suspense, making the film even more exciting to watch. However, some of the artistic choices that the filmmakers made bloat the movie, and some character misuses might irritate fans. Despite these flaws, Civil War has become one of my favorite A24 films in a while due to its focus on the story over the odder content they choose. The First Omen doesn’t try to reinvent the wheel and instead builds upon what made the original movie great. Arkasha Stevenson has done a great job of paying homage to the original while also creating a fresh feel to the story. The acting is also superb, making the movie feel both old and new at the same time. However, it’s not without its flaws. Some of the scare tactics and storyline feel a bit too safe and don’t deliver many unique scares. There are similarities to another movie in proximity. It may not be as impressive as Godzilla: Minus One, @godzillaxkong: The New Empire gave me hope that someone finally understands what we want in a monster movie and how to bring it to life. The story can be a bit eye-rolling at times, with some of the antics being quite ridiculous and convenient. Nonetheless, the movie offers some of the best-choreographed monster fights to date in this series, which is like watching anime-level goodness at its finest. The pacing of the film is engaging and keeps those with short attention spans happy, provided that you know what you’re getting yourself into. The pace does indeed hurt the film to some degree, particularly with Godzilla’s inclusion and how the battles are chopped up to levels that can be a bit annoying. However, overall, I was very satisfied with the movie, and I recommend that you catch it in theaters to experience all the fun it has to offer. Although it may not be as artistic as some other versions, and the story may still need work, it’s a fun and thrilling ride filled with feral fun. Critic Rating: 4/5. (Awesome!) @immaculatemovie had a promising start and delivered on the horror element with fantastic atmosphere, lighting, music, and special effects that brought the spooky scenes to life. The premise was alluring and Sydney Sweeney’s acting was noteworthy, but unfortunately, her talent was not enough to save the movie from becoming another bland horror movie. The small twist to the story failed to alter the predictability, and the ending lacked a unique or haunting finish. The characters’ lackluster performances and unengaging story arcs added to the disappointment. I enjoyed much of @ghostbusters: Frozen Empire. It’s an enjoyable film with entertaining antics, a good pace, and plenty of humor to keep things entertaining. The actors were great and the world-building/design is stunning, making the busting adventure as life-like as possible while keeping up with modern-day graphics without sacrificing quality. The movie was an awesome spectacle, with a touching finish and that same heartwarming ambiance that Afterlife brought. However, the final act seemed rushed and weakened, which felt off compared to the rest of the movie. The characters were imbalanced, the villain was misused, and silly elements got in the way of the spooky story, which was a step back from the promise of the trailers. Nonetheless, the fun elements of the movie were still enough to encourage seeing the film, hopefully at the theater as well. Critic Rating: 4/5 ⭐️ A must-see on the big screen! @arthurthekingmovie is a thoroughly enjoyable and entertaining movie that provides a light-hearted story. The incredible dog and remarkable team make for a solid mixture of simple enjoyment in a tale with all the elements of movie magic thrown in. The performances of all members, especially the dog, will tug at heartstrings and athletic stature alike. The editing brings much of the race’s excitement out in spades. However, the movie has some editing choices and character directions that need tweaking. The movie is predictable in terms of its plot. Despite these minor issues, Arthur the King’s story is still worth watching, enjoying, and embracing for the energy and inspiration it provides in such a tight and fun package. @kungfupanda‘s latest installment may not be the most unique experience I’ve had, but it is one of the most enjoyable movies I’ve seen this year. It stays true to its roots, continuing Po’s story as a fun adventure filled with family-friendly laughs and well-balanced storytelling that all ages can appreciate. The world is brought to life with beautiful design and animation, and the strong voice acting helps to further develop the characters that we’ve grown to love. The movie boasts some of the best fights I’ve seen in a long time, with action that perfectly fits the story. However, a few twists could have helped break up the monotony and better character usage would have improved the movie. @imaginaryfilm held a lot of potential but unfortunately, it didn’t deliver on its promises. While the acting was decent and the characters were engaging at times, the movie lacked the punch it needed to stand out. The story had unique elements and creative setups for scares, but it didn’t deliver on them. Additionally, the balance between horror and comedy was off, which made it difficult to fully enjoy the film at times. While some parts did make me chuckle, it felt like it was trying too hard to be funny at times. @ordinaryangelsmovie is honestly one of the best movies I’ve seen this year! The movie is about a struggling hairdresser (Hilary Swank) finds a renewed sense of purpose when she meets a widowed father (Alan Ritchson) working hard to care for his two daughters. With his youngest critically ill and waiting for a liver transplant, the fierce woman single-handedly rallies an entire community to help. This film had me in tears from the opening scene to the end credits and I don’t think there was a moment in this film where I stopped crying. Swank is just as electrifying as ever and Ritchson has this vulnerability that is very different from his roles in #FastX and #Reacher and you can see the pain on his face as he struggles with his faith and trying to take care of his girls. Having grown up in MN, and idolizing the Coen Brothers work, it was really something special to see my talented and beautiful friend up there on that big screen doing her thing! Bravo! What a fun filled road trip! After Connie’s movie, Claudine and I headed over to Mann’s Chinese Theater, where we met up with my mom and brother and checked out Ciro Dapagio’s ( @ciro_dapagio55 ) pilot: “Silent Partners”. I was so happy to finally have everyone in the same room. Four years ago, the plan was to introduce the family to Ciro in Marbella, España 🇪🇸. Well Covid hit, my mom and brother split, and Claudine and I got “stuck” in Spain for seven months. So having Ciro in from Miami and getting to finally meet my family was nice. Here’s to those that are important in our lives. @madameweb is certainly not the greatest movie I’ve seen, but it’s not the worst either. There are elements of this vision that show the potential for a good future but needs a lot of work to make up for this rushed installment. With a talented cast, music and some fun writing can be the building blocks but they can’t erase what felt like lots of production limitations, rewrites, and editing that greatly shows in the film. A couple of boring battles, annoying gimmicks, and underdeveloped characters despite a strong cast were just some of the limitations this movie has to work through if it wants to continue in future installments.
