Sparks Lane is always a stop when visiting Cades Cove. I haven't been to the Smokies early enough in the spring to catch the dogwood trees in bloom in several years, but was able to this year. This is usually a "must do" image in the early morning if there's a nice layer of fog, but no such luck in the early evening. I forgot to share my image of Spruce Flats Falls yesterday. Another shot of Spruce Flats Falls for Waterfall Wednesday. This image is similar to The one that I shared last week, but a little bit closer. Of all of the waterfalls that I've visited in the Smokies, Spruce Flats Falls is easily my favorite. I mentioned previously that it's not on any of the tourist waterfall maps and that's true. Spruce Flats Falls is found on land that is managed by the @tremontinstitute so the park service is not responsible for trail maintenance. The Tremont Institute is pretty awesome. The Wall While everyone else set their eyes on the Cherry Blossoms I made my way over to the Vietnam Memorial for sunrise. It was cold, just over freezing, with the city mostly still asleep.I had the area to myself. With over 58,000 names on the Wall it reminds you quickly that freedom is NOT ever free. While my camera could not capture the view with any justice, I sat in silence as the sun rose reflecting onto the black mirrored Vietnam Memorial. The orange sky and the Washington Monument off in the distance reflecting back to me in the Wall. As I sat waiting for the 25 second exposures to complete in my camera I walked along reading the names begining to come into view from the day's first light. Is Fungus Friday a thing? Yes? No? Well it is today. While riding through Cades Cove, we saw a downed tree close to the side of the road that had about an 8-10 foot section that was covered in this stuff. The bright orange/yellow color really stood out against the darker color of the tree. Recently, a photographer friend shared wildflower images and talked about how they liked to photograph them with a wide angle lens as it showed more of the environment. After using a 16-35 lens for this image, I completely get it. I love having the leading lines of the tree bark in the foreground leading you to the fungus while still having a background of the woods. I think it gives the sense of being in that spot. I'm so glad that we stopped to photograph this when we did. Waterfall Wednesday. No trip to the Smokies is complete without spending some quality time with my favorite waterfall in the park, Spruce Flats Falls. It's like seeing an old friend and I can feel my face light up once the sound of rushing water comes within range. At around 2 miles round trip, the trail is rated as moderate but is littered with rocks and tree roots. Some sections are wide enough for a car while others are barely wide enough for a person. The best views require traversing across the shallow water to the right hand side. Over the weekend, I decided to spend a little bit of time at the Berry College eagles nest. I haven't spent much time at the nest in recent years. I can probably count the number of times that I've been over the past year on one hand compared to making it an almost every weekend thing early on. It was nice getting out there though. It was quiet with a breeze, I was the only photographer there, and I was able to both photograph and watch the eagles. While this image is nothing special, it reminded me of how large these raptors truly are. The wingspan is just amazing. With partially overcast skies, the lighting was soft but when they hit the sunlight, those feathers really pop. Now that there is a newer female in the picture, it's more difficult to tell them apart. I seem to go through a bit of a photography funk for a couple of months once or twice a year. A "writer's block" if you will, where I don't have any motivation to pick up my camera. That's been me of late but I'm slowly coming out of it. Last weekend, I sat down and worked on setup and image for the upcoming meeting for the Rome Photo Club and then I snapped this one yesterday. We had some amazing fog as I left the house and it seemed to blanket the entire area. It still lingered when I got to work but the rising sun was quickly burning it off. In the winter, I think Tumalo Mountain has the best views in the Bend, OR area. I got up to the false summit (couldn't make it to the top in time for sunrise - if you read my last post, such a hard hike for me coming from Wisconsin and not being too acclimated) and realized that I pretty much needed two cameras that shot constantly in two different directions. It was insane how amazing the mountain views were from up there! This one is of the ski area Mt. Bachelor, which we definitely shredded the next day 🏂⛷. By shredded, I mean focusing all of our energy on not constantly face-planting in the snow 😂😂😂
