Welcome to the 2024 Payne Fellow Cohort Miguel! Miguel Lua-Reyes graduated from Merced College, where he completed his Associate of Arts and Science degrees in History and Social and Behavioral Science. He transferred to Stanislaus State, where he graduated Cum Laude with his Bachelor of Arts degree in History. He hopes to pursue a graduate degree in international relations, public administration, public policy, or peace and justice studies. He intends to join the US Agency for International Development Foreign Service as a Crisis, Stabilization, and Governance Officer. Miguel is currently working as a Technical Assistance Manager for the California College Guidance Initiative, where he supports K-12 districts in improving the accuracy of transcript data and addressing issues affecting the data-informed functionality on CaliforniaColleges.edu. It was truly a productive day of networking with others in the #InternationalDevelopment field and tapping knowledge and advice from the pool of experts.
MDP Assistant Director Chan Williams (first from left in photo) attended the Annual Meeting of The Research University Civic Engagement Network (TRUCEN) hosted by the University of Colorado, Boulder, and the Campus Compact National Conference in Denver, CO. Chan was part of a team presenting on best practices for compensating local partners, based on a survey of 124 faculty and staff in 15 universities. The year-long study was conducted by a working group composed of university administrators, including Chan who represents MDP on the Emory Community and Civic Engagement Collaborative . A resource toolkit is now being developed by the team: it will be posted on the Campus Compact website and presented at next year’s conference in #Atlanta, GA. As a result of Chan’s involvement in this initiative, #EmoryMDP was approved through #CampusCompact to be a university hosting site for #AmeriCorps volunteers. Meet Graciela, one of the many inspiring mother figures we have come to know in Shandia. At 64, her life is a testament to empowerment, community, and unwavering love for family. Parents to three biological and two adopted children, Graciela and her husband dedicated their lives to education, shaping young minds as teachers for nearly two decades. In 2012, Graciela's leadership extended beyond the classroom as she took on the role of president of the Shandia Community. During this time, she also formed the women's group, aptly named "Hormigas Trabajadoras" or "Working Ants,” which flourished under her leadership and, now with her daughter as the president, continues to be a symbol of unity and empowerment for women throughout the community. Despite the demands of leadership and teaching, Graciela never wavered in her commitment to her family and one of her greatest triumphs was seeing all her children flourish into professionals, carrying forward the values of integrity and respect that she instilled in them. Now, as a grandmother, Graciela's nurturing spirit continues to inspire the next generation. Pimp My Village Stories This week a Pimp My Village Story about the work of Abdisalam Ali - KAALO Foundation. Abdisalam founded the KAALO foundation in 1994 because he wanted to provide support to the vulnerable communities in Somalia. He was born in 1965 and moved to Holland in 1991. The projects in Somalia are mainly in Puntland. That’s in the most north-eastern part of Somalia. Abdisalam: “The goal of KAALO Nederland is to protect human rights, empower of women, reduce poverty, and lower unemployment in Somalia.” The KAALO Foundation has been doing projects with a lot of success for decades. They know how to do fundraising and are always eager to learn and professionalize their organization. At this moment Abdisalam Ali and the KAALO Foundation are working on 3 projects: 1. Improving educational facilities for children in Somalia, with electricity and electronics. These are powered with solar energy. 2. Facilitating higher education for young woman, who otherwise would be deprived of this opportunity. 3. Fostering sustainable livelihood and a steady form of income among nomadic communities by facilitating a transition into the fishery sector Abdisalam: “At this moment most of my attention is going to the project where we empower women to gain more economical independence: We offer a two-year scholarship program for 30 young unemployed women from underprivileged families. We create employment opportunities for these 30 women by equipping them practical Secretary and Office Administration skills.” Abdisalam: “Every trainee will have the opportunity to undergo a minimum one-month internship at esteemed institutions in Garowe. Upon successful completion of their educational journey, the highest-performing trainees will be considered for job placements.” The KAALO foundation started this project 3 years ago. They have been able to give 15 women the chance of finishing the course and get a job as an office manager. Abdisalam: “We are very happy we could already offer these women a job. productive day was spent with my elder brother, former Mayor of Bhadrapur Municipal Corporation, Jeevan Kumar Shrestha Kasaju dai. We discussed the budget for floodlights on behalf of the Bhadrapur Jhapa Gold Cup. Unfortunately, the program to welcome the Minister of Youth and Sports, Honorable Birajbhakta Shrestha, and observe Mechi Stadium at Bhadrapur Jhapa Gold Cup has been postponed due to illness, providing an opportunity to further discuss the matter. The meeting also included the participation of the General Secretary and Member, Tirtharaj Dhakal, and Bikki Jaiswal. En route to catching a flight to Kathmandu, I had a fruitful discussion and flew with the youngest member of Parliament, Ms. Nisha Dangi, who also serves on the Committee of Parliamentary Affairs. I extend my gratitude to Jeevan Dai for his unconditional support, as well as to the entire family for hosting and providing a delicious Nepali meal. Our dedicated team in Malawi just hosted our first annual ‘EDUCATION IS POWER’ STUDENT RETREAT, with a focus on building character, confidence, and understanding outside of the traditional classroom. 🙌 113 secondary school students gathered for this 2-day retreat led in cooperation with teachers from our partner schools as well as local healthcare workers, police, and social welfare officers. 🤝 Our Power students discussed what it means to be a leader, human rights, best practices for studying, healthy relationships, and much more! 📚 There was even some time for some friendly inter-school sports activities. For some students, this was the first time ever visiting the district capital of Kasungu! ⚽️ The 'Education Is Power' retreats are part of our strategy to expand our sponsorship program to go beyond just providing financial support, especially in helping our students be better prepared for life beyond secondary school as leaders and role models in their communities. 🧡 We can’t wait to do it again in Burkina Faso very soon!
