For Day 69 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am featuring the work of @lynnwhipple – a Florida native whose art has always inspired me and whose friendship is a treasured gift. Lynn has always been a creative -- an avid enthusiast of color and design and deeply attuned to the natural world. Her life as a professional artist has had many seasons – her work as a location specialist and art director for television; opportunities to develop short-term arts programs for kids; years of mixed media explorations with her Ninny series (altered vintage photographs and quirky narratives); her big, bold, beautiful bloom paintings, book, and teaching series; and her current luscious explorations of abstracted botanicals. Regardless of the medium, style or subject, she always creates with an exuberance that is contagious. To look at her work is to be met with joy, and she is that kind of light in all aspects of her life. I love pairing this Martha Jungwirth quote with Lynn’s artwork because Lynn is such a physical painter. She likes to move and dance while she works. Her whole body is engaged -- from her initial encounter with the flowers or foliage that are inspiring her to the way she makes marks and moves paint. Her freedom and expressiveness translate to juicy brushwork, delightful areas of polished paint, delicious applications of oil pigment sticks, and fresh use of drips, splatters, and line work. And color! Always color! Lynn and her husband John are beloved pillars of the art community in Central Florida – though their humility and generosity would probably make them bat away that comment. For Day 68 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am featuring the work of @kellyreemtsen – whose work has been incredibly influential for me. Kelly works in a range of mediums – from thickly textured oils to prints and drawings. She seems masterful in them all! Famous for her paintings of women, often in richly patterned vintage clothing and high heels, carrying oversized tools like giant monkey wrenches, axes, chainsaws, or sledgehammers. She likes to flirt with the juxtaposition of these symbols of “masculine” power and apparel that is often associated with cultural ideals of “feminine”beauty. You rarely see these women’s faces. But their bodies are in motion (climbing a step ladder, for example) or poised in a meaningful way, full of stored-up energy, ready to tackle a tough project. In my creative family tree, Kelly’s work takes a huge place of significance, in the lineage of Anders Zorn’s “The Waltz” (1891) and Wayne Thiebault’s “Yellow Dress” (1974). She inspired me to become a connoisseur of fashion photographs of evening gowns and cocktail dresses from the post-war 40’s through the 50’s glam to the mod era of the early-mid 60’s as a source of inspiration for my own paintings of dresses and shoes. She gave me permission to revisit the same subject and composition over and over, always imbibing a fresh sense of wonder. She encouraged me to take playful risks. Write a caption For Day 67 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am featuring the work of English creative @katesemple – whose handbuilt pottery and explorations on paper caught my attention recently on the Instagrams. One of the things that I love about Kate’s work is the way that her vessels seem to be wholly contemporary and simultaneously curiously nostalgic. Perhaps it’s because she sees herself forged as an artist in the midst of a larger historical creative conversation. Her mom, an antiques dealer who specialized in vintage ceramics, created a home where Kate was surrounded by decoratively painted vessels from bygone eras. Her engineer father spent his spare time tinkering in his wood-working studio, turning vessels for his loved ones out of felled wood. These influences shaped her. Trained as a graphic designer and illustrator, Kate was always fascinated by three-dimensional work. During the pandemic, she began creating vessels through slab, coil, and pinch hand-building techniques. Now, her celebrated one-of-a-kind clay sculptural vessels are sought after by collectors who appreciate the shapes she’s able to create and the gorgeous rustic patterns she uses to decorate her work. In many ways, Kate makes clay look like paper. And she’s also been known to work with paper to create three-dimensional clay-like shapes. She’s passionate about both mediums, conducting virtual and in-person workshops to help others explore the possibilities of flatness and dimension. For Day 66 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am featuring the work of London-based painter and illustrator @_charlotte_hardy_ -- who is influenced by outsider and folk art, children’s art, museum collections, interiors of historic homes, and the garden. I think I fell in love with Charlotte’s work because of her playful way of capturing patterns with a delicious ornamental flatness. In her still life paintings, objects are canvases for rich decoration. Chandeliers, antique sofas, ceramic jugs, teapots, and ceramic plates become her muses. Her style is influenced by her love of drawing from observation, combined with energetic and expressive linework. Her use of space creates a sense of stillness and simplicity. And I’m particularly drawn by the contrast between abundance and careful curation in her work. Charlotte’s recent paintings explore tabletop still lifes in real and imagined interiors. She uses elements of repetitive pattern -- like a patchwork quilt – to hold the subject matter. Seasonal flowers and patterned ceramics form whimsical domestic narratives. For Day 65 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am featuring the work of artist @sandraboorne – who lives part of the year in Montreal, Canada, when she’s not working out of her home studio in Boynton Beach, Florida. Sandra’s years of work in the floral industry (as both a garden designer and a flower shop owner) and training in graphic design influence the signature style of her paintings. She hopes to capture her innermost feelings and memories through her work. This aspiration shows up in her process, which involves many layers of gestural mark-making, occasionally with collage elements added. She intends to create history within each layer, adding texture, subtracting paint to reveal the underlayers, and then adding more paint as the forms begin to be revealed. Though she paints primarily in Acrylics and Oil pigment sticks, she has a strong background in watercolor, which she still teaches on cruise ships. I paired this Rollo May quote with Sandra’s painting because she notes that she never creates a painting without joy, and she hopes that the joy is experienced by the viewer as well. For Day 64 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am featuring the work of Australian artist @johnbokor – whose interiors and still lifes just captivate me. Living and working in Sydney, John is a master of “real life plus and minus” – a term that I just coined (though somehow, I doubt it’s going to go viral) to explain the freedom he feels to paint believably representational objects and spaces and give reality a little zhuzh here and a little tweak there. In this way, he creates scenes inspired by real life, but not obligated to it. If something isn’t working, he scrapes it all away and starts over, adding, subtracting, and rebuilding elements until he’s happy with what has emerged. He often highlights earlier layers of mark-making, emphasizing the history of trial and error in his work. Isn’t that deliciously human? Aren’t we all complicated layers of what has worked and not worked in our own stories? Plus his paintings are juicy, colorful, and full of vitality! I struggle with slowing down. I often spend my time worrying about not having enough time to do everything I HAVE to do versus just doing the things that I WANT to do! For Day 63 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am featuring the work of artist @elainespeirsme – a painter who I only recently discovered but was instantly drawn to. She was born in Johannesburg, South Africa and transplanted to the Scottish lowlands as a girl. Her childhood experiences in and between these places helped forge the themes of fragility, contradiction and reinvention that recur throughout her work. One of the elements of Speirs’ work that caught my attention is the way she explores the contrast she observes between the rich contours of female personhood and the depersonalized portraits of women in the public sphere. Her paintings may reference a variety of imagery – ranging from eighteenth century portraiture to contemporary photography and film – with the goal of reclaiming moments of humanity. She traverses in a space that fascinates me -- the connection between the distant and the intimate, between the universal and the personal. Listen to her, your Body. Treat her like the loyal travelling companion she is. A Woman’s Body is the single, greatest witness to all she has seen, done, heard, tasted, felt, and experienced in her lifetime. When a Woman’s body aches, she is talking of need. When a Woman’s body wanes, she is asking for rest. When a Woman’s body tightens, she is asking for release. When a Woman’s body groans, she is asking for room to cry out. When a Woman’s body lightens, she is asking for celebration. Listen. To. Her. She will hold on to all the stories, even the ones, you do not want to or cannot yet face. And that is okay, until she decides it is not. It is important when healing to understand you are allowed to trust your own judgment about your own physiology. You do not have to listen to the uninformed people who will tell you she is lying to you, because the Body does not lie. She may panic, from time to time. She may even ‘misinterpret’ a circumstance. But even in this, she is Truth Telling. She is providing you a beautiful tiny door you might choose to walk through when you feel ready. Violence recovery and harm reversal involves A LOT of listening to one’s body. And that means, a Woman must be prepared [and feel safe enough] to meet the parts of her story that feel uncomfortable. Living in Saint John, a seaport town on the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick, Canada, Karen is exposed to expansive colors, dramatic interplays of light and dark, and a natural attunement to the environment. These elements show up in the way she uses paint to capture the essence of what she sees – flowers, fruit, and the structures of everyday objects. I dream of a day when Women speak freely, without fear of repercussion for being Truth Tellers, and are protected from future harm. This is not a pipedream. This is boots on the ground. This is eyes on Acts, and eyes on inaction. In order to move on this, we must understand what is currently available to Women who have experienced violent realities. I remember the first time I laid my eyes on the cover of this Act. I was re-reading the contents the other day, wondering upon the process where words, in ink, on paper, move off the paper and place Women into real life safety. Is it working? Are we doing enough? Can we do better? I cannot tell you the number of times I struggled, listening to Women’s stories, showing that the language of our “Acts” do not always translate to just acts being performed in the flesh. But days of Old, are not days of New. And the more one knows the farther they can go. So, LORD, take these dancing feet out of the studio, and equip me that I may travel over harsh terrain and find my way to Lands of New. And maybe my boots on the ground will leave some footprints for other Women to follow in. All I ask, is one day, for Women’s stories to be told in their entirety. And if I make it there first, let me be the Woman able to provide safe spaces for the unfolding of terrified hearts to open up fully and learn how to beat again, not in a Confined Space, but upon wild, wide-open plains. Oh Breathe, Fresh Wind, upon us all, to infuse our Dry Bones with the Breath of Life. And rattle my Dry Bones, just long and loud enough that other Women can follow the sound of my frame calling them to a Place of Peace. As it is written let it also be so. Amen. For Day 61 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am revisiting the work of @heatherbyrne1 — an artist living and painting on the north coast of Northern Ireland. I “met” Heather a few years ago through online courses with @emilyball_painting . In addition to being a lovely human, her paintings and courage are inspirational to me! Her most familiar work is based on her responses to the landscape. She loves to work outdoors, ensconced in the environments she is choosing to capture. Whether it is a coastal landscape or the grounds of a historic home, her mark making is decisive, creating a sense of immediacy. And her color choices are vibrant, recalling bright skies, misty waterscapes, deep shadows, urgent winds, or gentle birdsong. Recently, she has also been showing us some still lifes – beloved everyday objects that hold history and purpose, often on the edge or otherwise overlooked in the bustle of daily life. She brings a decided calm to these compositions. Simplified shapes, a slightly muted palette, and delicate linework help capture the stability of home and the sights that we hold dear there. I'm feeling recovered from my flu and it's time to pick up again. Dug out these babies from lockdown. Amazing what you can find in a spring clean. Ha ha! I picked some full body exercises and did a circuit. I made it short and sweet as it's my first day back to training. Then finished off with a vinyasa flow yoga as a nice stretch and to find a state of relaxation. It's going to be a day of relaxing as work has been very full on and I can feel a fibro flare is brewing as I've got an all over body ache. For Day 60 of my 100 Days of Encouragement Project, I am sharing the work of artist @florencebh. Having grown up in Kent, UK with an artist dad (@mickhutchings), Florence Hutchings now makes London her home, where she creates paintings, drawings, and collages that celebrate the domestic realm. Her work revolves around the poetry of the everyday, taking elements from her life – sometimes it’s her studio, sometimes the clothes rail in her bedroom, a lamp on an end table or the bathroom sink. She transforms these objects into simplified forms that are full of so much vitality. Her colors are bold, and often unexpected. Texture and layers feature heavily in her work. And collage plays and important role in her process. Okay…so here’s the truth. I’m a fan girl. I am obsessed with Florence’s work and secretly want to be her when I grow up. (Which seems highly unlikely because I’m way old enough to be her mother. But you get my point.) The Call to Freedom begins in the deep recesses of the heart first, I think. And the longer I am alive the more I see most of us do not even hear it until our hearts break open and the Call cries out from under our feet and we have to move a little bit in a new direction in order to set it free. And whether or not we believe this is right or fair becomes unimportant. We can theorize until the end of time but at the end of time all that we are left with is a rooted position holding a theory; but if one chooses to move even just a little to one side away from stuck then perhaps the Call to Freedom can eek out from under our feet and rise up in order to meet the rest of our senses. Because, at this point, I like to imagine the senses become part of the solution that assist us in finding our way Home. That is what was sitting in my mind and only came to me once I moved a little on this night, this late Friday night, the end of this Freedom Friday. And now the work of that day is done. And I can sleep until another day begins. And to you, Reader, rest well and good night or arise and good morning. Either way, I am glad you stopped by. 109 of 366 it starts from me! this was a water refill machine at the airport when i arrived DMK Airport during my holiday. i was so happy to see it! On this, Freedom Friday, I state: To raise a Woman is to imply there is a low point of origin which she need to be lifted from. We can only raise Women when we understand where they live, move, and have their being. Raising Women also requires vision and hope – a belief there is something beautiful ahead, something we must lift our heads to see and pursue. Every word here has been fire-tested. I would never ask any Woman to contemplate or walk herself toward a hard truth unless I can tell her I have come through the other side of it myself. I am here, for other Women, because I have been raised with Great Love and relentless determination to move towards a new life. I am here to tell the story of where I came from and how I got to where I am today. “Move on. Get over it. You’re stuck in the past. You’re so unforgiving.” First image: she was 31 years old; she was also barely alive. I remember thinking, at the time, people will notice the hair…and they did. They truly did. But if you look long enough, you see deep sorrow on her face; that Woman knew she was standing atop a cleverly concealed trap door and it was only a matter of time before she fell through and down. And when she did, no one noticed because everyone assumed she was just, “busy.” With violence recovery and harm reversal: Women do not keep “going back” because they’re helpless victims who cannot move forward. In order to move into new lives, into Freedom with Hope, we must be freed of the shackles that were placed on us by cruel people. We can only go as far as we are allowed to move. For many Women seeking to extricate themselves from violent pasts, they wear [often] invisible shackles. My shackles have been exceptionally well concealed, almost as cleverly as the trap door I used to find myself standing upon. On the fateful day, when I fell through and down, I entered a profoundly deep Confined Space. In this dark place, I used that time [and concealment] to build a secret chamber. At first, it was deep in the recesses of my heart; but as the years passed, and the light began to find its way in, I began to create, build, and prepare for my release. I am not invincible. I am not stronger than others. I had a breaking point (many actually). There was a time when I did not think I could go on any longer, and I begged GOD for reprieve. A Word of Wisdom came through, and I made a choice… I knew, one day, I would be set free. If I was going to be shackled, then I was going to train and dance, and use those shackles to grow stronger than I had ever been before. They would not become instruments of harm upon me. With great determination, I turned captivity into my training ground. One day, I would be freed to run further and faster than ever before, and no one would ever restrain or contain me again.
